Ultracaps are they worth it?
nigel replied to pmureika's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
how much would 6 of these cost in comparison to just adding a the single battery that they "act like"? -
Impious, nem, I had to 1 up both of you. Been too long since I've seen a funky pup reference used. All hail the mighty funky pup, destroyer of everything in it's path. The original beast sub. Best sub ever made. period.

Well, as some on here know, Up until the end of last month I was a Correctional Officer at Kingston Penitentiary. Thought I'd share a link with everyone, has a couple video's of the inside in the article... Not all the info being told is very accurate however, but the videos do show the inside... http://globalnews.ca/news/877576/inside-kingston-penitentiary-tours-sold-out-within-hours/ Place had a very storied past, was a fun ride, loved working there.

already at another prison. Stepped down to a medium and not really enjoying it. Will probably take me another 6 months to get used to the open concept and amount of movement. The inmates get TV here as well, but they have to pay for the cable service and buy their own tv. It keeps them from constantly attacking us, so, meh, it's one more thing we can take away/hold against them for bad behaviour... Turning off power to a cell can be a great motivator to fall in line... What they called "deep seg" in the video, was called diss cells, no one ever called it deep seg, but then perhaps the tours should be being given by someone who worked in the jail, not an ex warden who spent most of her tenure off on training at regional and national...

single wall with strategically placed bracing will be a lot lighter than doubling all the walls. that's where my vote would be...

Worth it, or not? A few questions regarding practicality
nigel replied to SpeakerBoy's topic in General Audio
Okay, so the stetsom 2k5e is rated for 2500 watts @ 12.6v and 3300 watts @ 13.8v, depending on your electrical back up I would look at there is also the DLP customs MLD18 through the SSA store @ $395 each (in your 400/per price range for 2)(1500 watts/ea) If you were looking to do just one 18 you could always look at an SSA Evil 18 ($799 in the SSA Store)(3250 watts) Or if you wanted to go with a single 21" sub you could look at the 21" Judge from IA ($799 in the SSA store)(2500 watts) Then there is alway the option of looking at used gear... -
Kingston Pen is now officially CLOSED. On to working at the next prison I go... So far, not very excited by what I see. Big shock going from working armed posts at a max to working an open concept medium...

It's also a great place to pick up single moms on welfare, but that doesn't mean that you should....

my old 92 ranger had plugs that I had to drill new holes in the put wires through. The s-10 I had was an easy peasy big ole rubber tube to run wire through. every vehicle is different. Best of luck.

what voltage is bad
nigel replied to toy2008's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
depends on the amplifier. Most manufacturers list an operable voltage range for the amp. -
No it will not "give" you more voltage. What the larger wire does is allow the electrical current flow with less restriction/resistance, allowing you to use the full potential of your supply. Which in turn can help in preventing voltage drop if your total current draw is enough to cause strain on the stock sized wiring/system.

thanks for the compliments. Leedogg: silver is the way I'm leaning to match the exterior finish, but we'll see.

well, since my last post, after more sanding, and more puttying, followed by more sanding again... I sprayed a second coat of primer, which was subsequently followed up by more sanding, to get to today. So I just got in from spraying a third coat of primer, and hopefully the last. Currently airing out the garage, and waiting for this coat of primer to dry, before more sanding yet again, before deciding on and buying final color. So on to why you all look at this thread, the pics...

Amp Tunning
nigel replied to FiAudioSubwoofersjj's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
what exactly do you mean by "tune" your amp? Are you asking how to set your gains? Where to set your subsonic filter? Or whether or not to use bass boost, and if so then how much? Need to eliminate the ambiguity from your question so as that we can give you the best informative answer. Now, all that being said, here are some suggestions. 1: Set your gains by ear, ensuring to listen for stress on the driver, and watching for clipping to ensure you are not overdriving your subwoofer. 2: Subsonic filter should be set at or just below tuning frequency of your enclosure to ensure you don't unload below tuning frequency driving the subwoofer past it's mechanical limits (very quick way to cause damage to a speaker, you will audibly hear it drive it's coil into the back plate or see it push out past it's physical limit and potentially rip/tear it's spider/surround) 3: Bass boost. Leave this off. That is all. -
Which amp for subs
nigel replied to Stephen93s10's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
that's true I guess, then why not this amp? http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_24977_Precision-Power-PPI-S1300.1D.html It's 10 dollars less. I have the 850 and have not had any issues with it. -
no carpet in hatch area, it's all vinyl/plastic, and is greyish/charcoal mix. Exterior is Silver. Think I'm leaning towards silver right now, but my adhd won't let me make up my mind. Million ideas a second flying around in my mind, and can't decide on any of them...

Which amp for subs
nigel replied to Stephen93s10's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
are you getting dual 2 ohm coils or dual 4 ohm coils? ssa store says both options are available... If dual 2 ohm coils the wiring series for coils on subs then the two subs paralleled together for a final nominal of 2 I would suggest this: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_67919_Hifonics-ZRX2400.1D.html 1200 watt @ 2 ohms Not sure where you were looking at getting one of the 2 hifonics amps you listed above, but sonic is out of stock on both and this one's price comes in in between the two you have listed above. Plus, should you down the road decide to go bigger, you will have the extra power available with this amp... -
well, been doing a little by little here and there on this. Lots of puttying/sanding smoothing been done. More to go. Picked up 2 more cans of sand-able primer today to have ready. Also had Wyatt helping me today (my 2 year old). Also, ran a 1/4 round over on the corners with the router today, and put another thin layer of filler on a few places. the pics: This is about when Wyatt decided he needed to go through his tackle box (he calls it "fishy box") to make sure nothing has gone missing. Hopefully get the time to get it all smoothed out and a solid primer in color over the next couple of days, then I need to decide on final color.

What I had in my '03 s-10 before I sold it, never took pictures after carpeting the enclosure for some reason. System consisted of alpine cda-7998 source, JBL GTO series 75.2 and 601.1 amps, Clarion SRS 1686 components in doors, and one OZ Audio Matrix Elite 12.4 sub in 2 cubic feet tuned to 34 Hz. Still have the alpine 7998, oz sub and clarion comps. Sold the amps though. Same amps, and sub as above, but when I had them installed in my 92 ranger, was running JL VR 5.25 components in it, with an alpine 7897 deck at the time.

I know how it feels with having no time to work on things. Kids keep you really busy.

I say poly, but if all you looking for is a personal opinion on looks, and nothing else, then really, it's whatever you like most. It's your sub, your choice. If there was a big performance difference between the two parts, then go with the better performer. Up to you I guess. Really, I would liken this to asking which color should I paint my car? red or yellow, I have enough of both versus I just picked up a new engine for my car, should I leave it n/a with a carb to make 210 hp, or should I put on my complete turbo setup that I already have and make 310 hp? I guess make your decision based on which question you want answered.
