    Latest RL-p 12 experiment

I had only tried one RL-p 12 in my truck, due to enclosure size limitations, so the second one has been sitting on a shelf calling my name since the group buy last year. I finally decided to build a box for both of them which is 1.60 CF net with 1.5 pounds of polyfill and downfired. That is the largest enclosure that will fit. While 0.80 net per sub is well under the optimum size, the subs still sound surprisingly good. To test the box I used my usual selection of the IASCA test disk, test tones off EMNB, some Dave Matthews Band and a little Van Morrison. I am incredibly impressed with the RL-p and find it to be one of the best sounding subs before you even begin the tuning process. Even in, what is on paper, too small of a sealed enclosure, it is an absolute joy to listen to. This is the 19th different set up for this truck and it will be staying in there for longer than the average. Latest RL-p 12 experiment

You mean like a Series-Tuned, 3-Chamber, Compound-Loaded, 6th Order Bandpass for a pair of TangBand 6.5" drivers? Without going with a blow through or taking out the back seats, there is a very limited amount of space in a Dodge Ram QC. The box has to fit in an area where the OEM center console goes and still retain full use of the top section of the center console. That significantly reduces the available options.

For me, experimenting with different subs in different enclosures is the most enjoyable aspect of this hobby.

want to push my 12's to the limit

I ran one RL-p 12, both in sealed and vented boxes, on a PG Tantrum which showed ~1500 watts RMS on the birthsheet. With the gains set correctly and the right size box, it handled it with no problems.

When are you scheduled to receive the demo? I am curious about how it performs in small sealed boxes.

    0.6CF tuned to 24hz

This was a recommendation for the RL-p 12 on another site. I was just curious what everyone thought. For SQ purposes, try this: 1.2CF net (.6CF per driver), tuned at 24Hz, 22.5 ~ 25 square inches of port area. The problem is going to be vent length (causing the enclosure to be quite large), but it should sound extremely good if implemented properly. These drivers are best suited for low-tuned vented apps. They will work sealed, but if you can make this enclosure work, I think you will be pleased with the boost in overall output while maintaining excellent SQ and extension. The driver has an extremely strong motor. It doesn't need a very large enclosure at all, especially when taking into account the effects of in-car transfer function ("cabin gain"). That enclosure should yield a fairly flat FR and good extension which would be optimal for SQ. The problem with small low-tuned vented boxes is vent length. After you take into account how long the vent must be, the overall enclosure isn't so small anymore. But when implemented properly with a driver like this, they can yield some very nice SQ and extension and give you a nice SPL boost over a small sealed box.

    Has anyone tried a RL-p 12

It does have the 60/40 rear seat. My favorites are my current set up (1.15 ft^3 sealed with the RL-p 12) and the Corian box I built for the two Brahma 10s. The Brahmas are my favorite subs although the RL-p is impressing me more and more. Mike did email me back and felt I did not have enough room for two RL-ps. Time to start thinking of some way to get a little more airspace.

    Has anyone tried a RL-p 12

Has anyone tried a RL-p 12 in a .75 ft^3 box which is the minimum recommended sealed enclosure? Right now I have one RL-p in a 1.15 ft^3 enclosure. I have a second RL-p gathering dust but the largest box I could build would be .77 ft^3 net per sub. Worth building or not

Thank you for the suggestions. This is what I have tried in the past year: MTX Thunderform with MTX 6500 series subs MTX Thunderform with Rockford Fosgate HX2 Probox 60/40 with RF HX2 Probox with Adire Brahma Mark II 3.5 ft^3 slot vented box with RE SX15 .9 ft^3 sealed Corian box with 2 Adire Brahma 1.75 ft^3 slot vented box with SoundSplinter RL-P 12 1.1 ft^3 sealed box with SoundSplinter RL-P 12 1.5 ft^3 sealed box with RE SX15 1.1 ft^3 slot vented box with 1 Adire Brahma 1.25 ft^3 Precision port vented box with 1 Adire Brahma 1.25 ft^3 Precision port vented box with 1 Alpine Type R 1.15 ft^3 sealed box with SoundSplinter RL-P 12 The larger boxes on there did not allow me to reinstall the OEM arm rest which I really want to keep. The max dimensions I can do are 9H x 14.75W x 36L. I can't take out my back seat as I need that for my kids although I could replace the 60/40 rear seat with two single seats and I would have a ton of room in the center. I emailed Mike to see what he thinks. Unless he says it's not worth doing, and since it appears no one has tried it in a .75 ft^3 box, I am going to go ahead and build it and see how it sounds.

    Has anyone tried a RL-p 12

I don't want anyone to hear me coming. That is a stupid irresponsible use of car audio. Doing a blow through ends any chance of a decent trade in value so that is not an option. There is nothing wrong with current install, I am just trying to decide whether to build another box and use both subs. If the Rl-p sounds terrible in .75 ft^3, I didn't want waste my time.

It's a Dodge Ram Quad Cab. It replaces the center console. There is just no room in these.

I am so happy with my RL-p 12

Third time's a charm. 1.15^3 net downfired sealed box with 1 pound of polyfill in the center console of my Dodge Ram. First slot vented box was too big and looked awful in there. Second box was sealed (not downfired though) but it had too much air space for the amp I am using. This one is perfect!!!! Dave Matthews Band Live at Central Park plays so deep and so clean I could just sit in there and listen for hours. I've used quite a few other subs in my truck (Brahma, Alpine Type R, RE SX, 12W6, etc) but the RL-p will stay in there. B)

    Sealed box suggestions

I first built a 1.7 ft^3 slot ported box tuned to 32hz for my RL-p 12 and it handled my Phoenix Gold Tantrum 1200.1 with no problems at all. This weekend I built a 1.4 ft^3 sealed box which would give me 1.28 ft^3 net after sub displacement. The problem is that my amp easily overpowers the RL-p causing it to emit some less than favorable sounds when I turn it up. I then put it in a 1.13 ft^3 box (net), which helped some but I still cannot crank it. The enclosure specs say I should be using 1.0 ft^3 or less but then I read on here that 1.25 was the ideal amount of air space for this sub. What would be the ideal size box for the RL-p with 1200 watts RMS? Any help would be appreciated.

    Sealed box suggestions

That is exactly what I was looking for. I am just trying to find the right balance between enough air space for low bass extension but still limit the excursion enough to keep the thing together. I am at 1.13 ft^3 net right now. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> drop it down a bit more. i honestly don't believe u'll lose enough lowend to matter, especially with the power on tap to allow for max excursion. i also like tom's (acidburn) idea of dialing down the amp a bit. like i've said, the most i'd recommend ever for throwing at an rl-p is about 1200 and that's with smart set gains and good ears. jsut slug ur current box to drop displacement down a bit. and see what happens. wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I dropped it down to 0.85 ft^3 net last night and that helped a lot but I did lose some low end. The magic size is somewhere between 0.85 and 1.13 so I will keep playing with it. I can fit a box with 1.65 ft^3 net so I may build another box and put two RL-p's in it just for fun.
