Well... for starters, $500 won't get you a system. It might get you a substage. Also, keeping your stock speakers isn't SQ. Since you did mention that you wanted something with SQ and that you're handy. We'll point you off in the direction of a Sealed box for now. Since you have the time, I'd wait for the new Stereo Integrity Magnum to come out. It's sub $300 and works excellent in a sealed box. You won't need much power to run it, thus lowering your amplifier budget.

So strapping the 1500's then? You're right on the edge if you strap them. If you run them each at 2 ohms, you should have more then enough current.

What do you have planned for front speakers and amps? Surely with that Sub stage, you don't plan on keeping stock speakers in.

That's not a lot of space for two woofers ported (3.40893^3ft GROSS). You did not give a budget, so it's gonna be kind of hard to help you. With the space you have, you might get away with an optimal enclosure for 2 SSD 10's, or a less than optimal enclosure for 2 SSD 12's. Or you can step up to 1 SSD 15".
