First things first, if you're going to do a dedicated battery system, you won't be needing the cap - you wouldn't need it even with out the battery, but thats another discussion... You'll want to look into an isolator to let the alternator charge both batteries, but only use one to run the car electrical and one for the Audio electrical.

Why would you want to add more distortion to your signal chain? That's just asking for trouble.

It works, but you don't need it for a lonnnnngggg long time. You need to accumulate carbon build up in the engine. A lot of the time carbon is bad, but on extremely old cars, the carbon actually keeps the engine running (stopping up leaks etc). I do my vehicles once every 30,000 miles.
