I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum or not, because this isn't quite as technical as the other topics I searched through, but hopefully this one will do. I've got a friend from work who's son has an amp that is not working. I don't know a whole lot about amp repair, but I know how to check diodes, transistors, and simple stuff with a meter (no oscilloscope at my disposal unfortunately), so I am just taking a look at it for him. I dont have a whole lot of description about what the amp is doing, but from what he tells me, the amp will come on, won't go into protect or anything, but the subs will pop and them hum continuously. The first thing that came to my mind is RCA plugs or a ground problem, but he had another smaller amp that he put in and it works fine. Just from this information, is it possible to have any idea of whats going on, aside from a grounding problem (which I can't check since I don't have the car)? could this be a MOSFET or a transistor something like that, or would I just be wasting my time with checking those? All of the solders look solid and nothing is burnt, except a spot on the board around a jumper connected to ground, but this guy tried to solder it in himself so it looks like maybe it was rosin or flux. I realize that isn't much information so I don't expect much back, but if someone can point me in any direction that would be great. Thanks

so im reviving this thread, i may need to make a new topic in the general forum but im lookin for some opinions. i thought it over some more and now im getting the itch to put a complete (or at least somewhat complete) setup in. so i've decided that i want to do one 8" sub, and i want to amp the door speakers. i still plan to go with coaxials as i do not want to cut into any panels to mount the tweeters. i still want to stick with the stock HU as well. i plan to get new door speakers first, then shoot for the LOC then the amp and sub. are there any recommendations for door speakers first off? secondly, i've never used an LOC, so i dont know the in's and out's of them. are there some equalizer functions on them, or do i have to use the plain ole' bass and treble settings on the stock HU. any other hints/tips/recommendations on them? thanks for talking me into spending more money fellas

yea, no doubt that is true, and that is in my future plans, but for now i just need to stick with some coaxials and no amp. if i had some more time and energy i probably would, but for now i just need a plug and go thing.

My budget is around $75, mayyyyybe $100 if i can get a better speaker for a little more than $75. that is per pair of speakers of course. also, i have shopped at crutchfield before but never bought anything from them. how accurate are their measurements on whether the speaker fits in the car or not? am i able to rely on those measurments?

hey fellas, i recently bought a new car, a 1999 olds 88 ls. its a grandpa car, i know, but thats ok, cuz i like it. now i like keeping the stock look for now, and dont have a lot of time/money/energy to put into the stereo right now. the stock system is ok for now, but i would like to upgrade the speakers for a little more clarity, midbass, and maybe the ability to turn it up a little louder with a little less distortion (though i realize this is probably also because of the stock cd player.) im wanting just some low-mid level upgrades for front and rear speakers. front speakers will probably come first. first question, is this even going to be worth it, if im not adding any amplification or an aftermarket head unit? if you answered yes or even maybe to this question, continue to question 2. second question, what are some suggestions? i dont want to go component because i dont want to have to cut any holes for the tweeter or run wires or anything. i did look at the elemental designs e3.65i system, because i can put the tweeter on top of the mid, and still have the crossover, but i dont know if it will still fit behind my door panel. anyways, any suggestions are appreciated. thanks

alright, so i have found a used bike, but i dont know which is better. i can get a 4 year old schwinn airdyne for $75 (price seems a little low, i have yet to see the bike, the lady has no way to get pics on her computer), or i can go with probably the golds gym bike. The thing i dont like about the schwinn is that it is loud and also i live in a second floor apartment and im sure they are heavy. is it worth it?
-
yea i was hoping i could find a good used one, but so far the only thing i have found is a schwinn airdyne, which i like them a lot, but the lady never got back to me on it. hopefully sooner or later i can find a used one..

been shopping for an upright bike to have at home and just do home workouts from now on. i got some resistance bands and i actually like them a lot, they do a great job. I plan on buying more stuff but its a work in progress on my budget. Anyway, i need to buy a bike for now, I need some cardio, and running just isn't for me. I've got about $300 to spend, but it would be great if i could keep it lower than that. Im looking at a few bikes, between the $200 and $300 range and I was wondering if there were any recommendations. I want a quality product, but i have read some reviews on each bike and no matter what the price, they all seem to be about equal. Here they are: Proform 450 UR Upright Reebok 365TR Upright Golds Gym Power 210 Upright NordicTrack AudioRider U 300 any input would be helpful thanks

where abouts would i find one? i have google and looked thru car audio sites, but i can only find ones for the earlier models... EDIT: the first time i looked on crutchfield, nothing came up, but now this thing comes up, and the description sounds like it would fit, but when you put in your vehicle, it says it does not fit.. http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Ite...=3486&avf=N

im not sure where to post this, but it should work so im looking into buyin a new car (new to me) and i found an awesome deal on a 2002 Mercury Sable. i looked at the stock radio and it looks to have the climate controls embedded into the same panel. anybody have any experience with a sable?? do they make a mounting/install kit for an aftermarket head unit?

yea it is starting to look like it may get into more money than i want it to. im not exactly the richest yet. i will give it some time and maybe buy a good one on down the road.

Alright.....im gettin a little angry with my new computer...
bobby_7 posted a topic in Computers / Electronics / Music / Games
So, almost two months ago, i bought a brand new Dell PC. I recently got a job after graduating college, so i figured i'd get a good one (for what i use it for, im not into gaming), since for the first time in my life, i had the money to spend. I got 4 Gb of RAM, the new Intel Quad Core processor, 500 Gb Hard drive, Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers, etc... the total cost was a little over $1300. Until two weeks ago, i did not have internet, so i didnt really use the computer, just dicked around since it was new. Once i got the internet, i used the regular ole' Internet Explorer, and at least once, each time i used the internet, it would lock up and i would have to literally hold the power button to re-boot. This got annoying very quickly, so i thought maybe it was IE, so i downloaded firefox, thinking this was my problem, and yet it still does it! granted, i will have iTunes going, and i will usually have 2 - 4 tabs up, but they are nothing major. usually facebook, ssa, maybe crutchfield, but nothing full of flash and taking a lot of bandwith and memory to run them, and i would think that i should have absolutely no problem at all running this. When it locks up, my music will keep playing fine, and act like firefox locked up, but when i hit Ctrl + Alt + Del, the monitor goes into power save (it auto detects an input) and my music locks up too, and makes that horrible noise. am i really overloading the computer, or is this some kind of problem?? p.s. please, no comments about how i shouldn't have bought a dell or any biases. i have been happy with Dell's products and they work fine for what i need them for. -
i think it is a combination of a weight issue, my form and stride, and just not having ran for quite some time, so maybe i will just stick to the bike or elliptical til i can get rid of some of my belly. thanks for the info though

while $469 is out of my price range, it may also be a worthwhile investment, as i could use it for a long time and still get some great photos. and while i realize that its not about megapixels (necessarily), i definitely do not want to see pixelation (sp?)(even a word?) in my photos, as that is what i love about film. i have no experience with a digital SLR camera, so would that be an issue? EDIT: found a few AE-1's and some F2's on eBay for about $100, here are some links AE-1's: http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-AE-1-Program-Cam...1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-AE-1-Film-Camera...1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-AE-1-Program-w-5...1QQcmdZViewItem F2: http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-Nikkormat-FT2-35...1QQcmdZViewItem F3: http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-F3-35mm-SLR-Came...1QQcmdZViewItem

i think i have some insoles layin around my apartment if i can find them. i have some new balance shoes and they are very comfortable to me. granted they were only like $40 when i bought them, but they should be ok for what i use them for. my shin splints, when i get them, i can quit running, and switch to weights and they will go away within like 20 or 30 minutes and feel fine the rest of the day. should i still ice them post workout even if they dont hurt? i would just slow down my pace and keep running while i have these shin splints, but sometimes they are really painful, and i have also heard that when you get them, you should stop running, as it could cause further damage. is that true?
