Larger Box/Lower Power vs Smaller Box/Higher Power (Disregarding Space
Phil04 replied to Phil04's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
So then do changes in the size of ported boxes yield changes in frequency response similarly to sealed boxes? Other variables unlike sealed? Also, with a larger box I assume lower pressure within the box, and therefore at the port. However, port area is typically increased, which increases the acoustic force at the port. Do these differences cancel out? -

Bad question? Been answered somewhere I can't find? -
Thanks every one!

Larger Box/Lower Power vs Smaller Box/Higher Power (Disregarding Space
Phil04 posted a topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
So, from what I have read and come to understand, a larger ported box reduces the power required for a given driver to reach its mechanical limits. My question, then, is if you have the space to build a larger box, within the acceptable range for a given driver, and are not concerned with space or weight, would there be any reason to choose a smaller box? Given the same linear travel, would supplying more power to one woofer increase control and/or speed of the speaker vs the other? Or, since less power is being supplied and therefore stored in the coil, would delay due to inductance be reduced? Any other factors? -
I'm not really sure what to write, so I guess I'll just do as I see fit. Me: 25 yr old engineering student who has been a car audio nut since high school. I have so many questions and ideas running through my head and I need to start organizing them. Current Setup: Non existent. However, when I get back after my summer internship in NY I will be doing some audio shopping. Currently I am just going insane with my two rear 6.5 speakers with no surround left running off a clarion DXZ785USB, which I picked up for super cheap and seemed like a neat deck. Turned out not to be my favorite, but it works for what I have. Current conquest: My cousin has asked me to revamp his setup. He has a Nissan Frontier. Listens to rap/hip hop. Has a MMATS D2000.1 which we will be sending off for repair. Had 3 Concept 15's (DVC 6ohm) sealed. Trying to stay around $300 for sub(s). He just wants a good daily (I know thats a bad word, but really, he isn't a sq guy, but would notice muddy or peaky output. Just wants decent sound which can smack you in the chest when its time to show off). Looking at Fi BL18 and AQ HDC318 currently. Any suggestions? Would I be better off with two lower power 15's or 12's? If so can I stay within budget? So many questions. Box size can be 6 cuft, possibly more. I need to go measure. Figured I would go ported as I can't see any reason not to. Also need to figure ouch which way to face sub(s) and port. Interested in learning more about: Economic ways to maintain higher voltage How to pick the best sub(s) and box for a given application Billions of other things. Feel like writing about something? Anything. Teach me.

PM Sent, but figure I'll ask here too. Still have the amp? Mine is painted, so I don't know what controls what. Can you help me out? Thanks.

Hey, as far as settings...I know i'm fine there. Been doing this for years, just attempted to reach the full potential of my subs. I have a soundstream Reference 500sx...which has more than enough power. I have the gain maybe half way up and my deck setting is flat and volume is at 3/4. Deck is Pioneer 8600mp, so I am not worried about any distortion from it. I see no cause for clipping anywhere. Yes, the drivers were having probs...mine was the one sent back due to the push termials, so that's not the problem. I just want to know what to look/listen for as signs of exceeding its limits. You say I will know... but apparently that's not enough for me. Should the sub never make any distinct sounds at high excursions? Or will there be some sounds as it reaches its peaks?

Hey, few questions. First, I currently have my RL-P 15 in a 2cuft box sealed. Pushing it with a SoundStream Reference 500sx, which does 500wrms, though I doubt I am near that because my electrical system sucks lol. The sub is currently in my Mazda 626. I am shopping around for a hatch at the moment. My first question would be what would I hypothesize would happen as far as changes in performance if I brought the volume down to 1.75 or 1.5? It for some reason seams the sub's power handling isn't as high as I was expecting and I wonder if that has something to do with the box. This leads to my second quesiton. Second question is about knowing when the sub is exceeding its limits. What should I look/listen for? Around here there are not many people with high excursion drivers and so I never get to see what limits can be reached. I watch on realmofexcursion, but I cant tell which sounds are real and which are just camera mike/file quality errors. Should it be perfectly quiet at all times or is it ok to have a pop sound or knocking sound at high excursions? This is the first sub I am actually attempting to push to its limits and I am a bit apprehensive, as you can tell. Also, if the sub is making noises while trunk is open, does closing the trunk put more pressure on the sub, effectively keeping it from moving as far? I don't believe it would since most force on the sub is due to the internal volume of the box. Final question for the night is can moving a sub from the back of the trunk (by the seats) to the front of the trunk yield significant increases? I guess that also goes for just repositioning in general. I know it can change where the peaks and valleys are within the car, but can it be that drastic of a change? Sorry if my questions sound amateurish. These are just things that I have never experimented with...aside from finding the limits of my friends stock supra sub with my 500sx. Needless to say the sub no longer moves...as in it is fused and will not move if you push on it. Cheap thrill, but fun none the less.

Hey guys. Finally decided to post somethin so I just registered, which i guess makes me a newby? Anyway, I am definitely enjoying my RL-P 15. It is currently in a simple 2cuft box running off a SoundStream Reference 500sx. I will be switching cars soon which explains the simple box. This sub gets good and loud and I haven't even done any tuning or messing around w location. The quickness is incredible. My front stage consists of CDT EF-51 components and dayton 8's for midbass. Both run off SoundStream REF 604 which may soon be replaced by a Monitor 4channel. About myself... Have been studying mechanical engineering at University of Florida for 3yrs now. Been into car audio since I turned 16 (21 now). I do not claim to be an expert by any means, but I do have a good grasp on the basics of install and design, as well as some advanced topics.
