Everything looks fine. You can disable the Quicktime tray icon by turning it off in the Quicktime preferences, will free up a few CPU cycles. Additionally, there is a utility out there which will scan your running processes called "Hijack This!" and report any suspicious processes, and enable you to disable them running on your system. It will even tell you what all those other processes are. I think there is also a website called Viper's Lair or Black Viper or something like that (Google XP Process Info) explains in detail all of the necessary processes in XP. You'd be surprised how many of them are utterly useless - unless you are on a corporate network. Gotta love Microsoft's bloated OS kernel code.

They are really not that similar at all. I think you are just used to a good user interface - which both of those browsers have.

I've tried them all, Shiira, Camino, Firefox, OmniWeb, you name it.... Honestly, for meeting my browsing needs, Safari does everything I need and just a bit more. In my extensive comparisons between all - Safari remains the easiest to use, fastest, and has the best UI. No, it isn't the most flexible, or feature-rich but none of the other browsers offer as near as much integration with the OS. As they say, someimes less is more.

Have any of you ever really thought about this?? To someone hyper-critical and sketpical as myself - this guy in every way appears to be an electronics manufacturing/retailing representative. There were about a hundred stories last year about this phenomenon we now call "viral marketing". Companies hiring people to create multiple online "identies/personalities" to push their marketing-speak upon the internet masses. Fortunately, the majority of the folks on these forums are not so easily swayed...honestly, the bit about the Kia/Mercedes comparison just about had me rolling on the floor.

budget is $400-$450 max... i have looked around all kinds of web-sites and all kinds of classifieds in forums and i can't come up with anything... right now i can get a brand new Dell desktop that is reallly good for $500, so i want to stay below that, cuz im gettin a used laptop... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Right. Don't buy a used notebook if you don't have to. I just have issue with Dell - but it's just me. As mentioned, a Core Duo notebook is definitely going to be the best bang-for-the-buck choice. However you are going to have to spend a few hundred more dollars to get there. Think around $700-$900. The best advice I can give you is to not cheap out on a notebook like you would a desktop. Notebooks are much more difficult, or impossible (besides RAM, fixed disks) to upgrade and generally you will keep them for much longer than a desktop system. Make an investment and get the best computer you can reasonably afford.

MY 65W Mac Mini FTW!!! Cheap to run and plenty fast.

That Dell is cheap, but thats about all it has going for it. It's heavy (8.1 lbs) and has poor battery life at right around 1.75 hours. Plus, it's Dell.... What is your current budget (what could you spend tomorrow)? I think we could help you make a better choice.

Centrino is a chipset, not a processor. It is essentially a brand. All Centrino denotes is that it is a notebook with the Centrino chipset, which includes a Celeron Mobile processor and built-in WiFi.

Go to your local Apple Store and ask one of the staff to show you Garageband, they usually have a PowerMac setup with a MIDI keyboard. Trust me, it will change your whole way of thinking. If you want some ReFills (samples/loops/instruments) for Reason I have a bunch of public domain stuff I have collected (4GB worth) that I could hook you up with.

Right now I am using a combination of Reason (blows FruityLoops completely out of the water), Garageband, and Soundtrack. I have used Logic and Protools in the past for live recording/production. Personally, I hate FruityLoops. It doesn't really have the functionality needed to be a full-fledged production suite, which for this type of application is necessary, and the learning curve is extremely high. I feel it is more of a toy than anything else, and honestly, it isn't worth learning, even if you are just getting started. If you are just getting into music/audio production, please, save yourself the pain, and invest in a Mac with GarageBand and Reason.
