Snobbishness at its finest. A bad direct drive table has a bit of jitter in it, because the motor is trying to hunt for the proper RPM constantly, vs. a belt drive that spins up and stays there. But a well-damped table such as the Technics or most DJ-caliber tables doesn't have an issue with jitter at all, and adding a record clamp will even improve the dampening of the platter more. A *good* direct drive is hard to build, that's why you don't see too many of them on the market. Much easier to clone a belt-driven table like the Rega P3.

Annnnnd... I need to take a shower and get some sleep. Exam week = teh suck

"Good" starts at about $200, new. Used is a little less. Something you'll keep for a while is $400'ish. I'm looking at a Technics SL-1200 series, pretty much the benchmark in direct-drive DJ tables. Most audiophools shun direct drives, but the Technics is simply way, way overbuilt compared to basically anything at that price point ($500 when fitted with a cartridge/headshell). I had a modded Audio Research belt driven 'table, but sold it for various reasons...had too many compromises for me to hang onto it for a while.

Wish I took it...I've got a 1024px version that's my current wallpaper.

Meet Me in the Morning always seemed to be the song playing when I'd get in the car after a night of drinking, to drive home from wherever I might have been...so it's always associated with me to the mornings, being a little hung over from the night before... But I have weird associations.

From the people I've talked to, unless you're buying in huge quantities the wholesale account really doesn't save you a whole lot. Unless you're buying speakers by the pallet. Then again, these people may have been giving me the runaround...

I had a teacher in HS that could throw half a scissor, and consistently make it stick in walls... Said it was something he learned in the IDF to kill time on deployment. Dude was cool as hell.

Perhaps you should get that looked at...

It's almost impossible to drive a true tubed output stage to a square wave...you can get it to, but you really, really have to be trying. When it's just the preamp, of course, things are different...

Time to put the finishing touches on the Rava cabinet, and fire 'er up again this week... If I don't get to it by Wednesday, it's not getting done for another week. And I don't know if I can go that long without bass at home.

me too, no other experience like it <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The car will never hurt your feelings, or ignore your calls, or spread nasty rumors to its friends.

on what? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Probably the "new version" of your national athlem. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've listened to a song where they take out all the politically-incorrect references and outdated phrases in yours...all that's left is "Oh Canada".
