Most people that have downfiring woofers/ports leave 3/4" to maybe 2" of clearance, that's really all that's needed.

An inch or so is fine.

The lips, accents and chrome trim make a big difference.

The design hasn't changed, customer support definitely has. If you can find a used pair, that'll be great. They'll work fine IB, with a corresponding lower power handling. With four amps, I'd really recommend using a Bosch-style relay to switch them. That's a lot of strain on the head unit's circuitry.
