Cheap flush bits are teh suck After one pass, they end up looking like Hicks' bits Guess if I want them to last I'll go to Woodworker's Supply in Burlington and fork over the cash for the real ones

Wow, usually never see another amp that uses SV811-10's for sale... $2500 picked up in Jersey. So only $1700 more than what I've got in mine
-
Since you seem pretty intent on SPL, I'd probably recommend another driver...

So apparently the elevator on the 1000' tower that our club has a UHF repeater on broke...so we can't install the new machine until the station sends someone out to fix it. And being public TV...who the hell knows what that'll happen. At least it broke when everyone was on the ground Hopefully that'll be before I go back to VT, I haven't been up there in a few years now. Should post some pics on here...one of the best views there is

How decent are we talking? $200 puts you solidly in used Adcom, Rotel or Parasound territory, for integrated or power amps...considering the crap that passes for quality in the mainstream, they'd definitely be "decent".

Scale up a Nelson Pass J-Low to 8's...muhahahahahahha If you go 8's, the Fostex 208 Sigma seems to get a very good following, but supertweets would be nice to keep from beaming too badly...

Loud is only good when it's accurate -
VT is pissing me off supremely today. Got an email saying I'm going to be dropped out of the 3000-level courses I'm registered for, which of course are the things I need to graduate...saying I haven't met all the lower level requirements. So nobody realized this last semester, just now? That D+ I got my freshman year in one of my math classes is killing me puckers.

why? I can't even tell you one of their songs. I only know one, and that was because some chick I was with last summer liked it.
-
Agreed , they test linearity of systems for a reason. The Sanford & Son IASCA test

If you're making a PE order sometime soon, let me know...I'll PP you the money for two sets of cabinet spikes and some grill cloth...probably a few other things I need in there in the next few weeks... They upped the price on the spikes from the last catalog Bastages

From the way you've described it, it's just plain SQ. The assumption that SQ can't be loud is totally wrong. I don't know where people get that idea from, maybe the basshead crowd hears us listening to something other than rap and assumes SQ is for the dainty and weak If I want to reproduce what the London Symphony Orchestra sounds like at fortissimo, that sure isn't going to be very quiet

I don't know what it does. Nobody tells me these things
-
Not sure where have you heard that? Obviously if from me yes. IIRC Nick Lemons was talking about a similar product he used on an install down here, I don't know if the same guy is behind it.
-
Where have you been looking? Unless you have really, really long interconnects and sources that have low preout voltages, you can use a "passive" volume control to save some money on the preamp end of things.

New to Home Audio, looking for some opinions and ideas for a first set
JimJ replied to johny24's topic in Home Audio
For simply two channels you have a lot of choices in electronics, I'd a separates whore so I'd recommend a preamplifier/power amp or monoblocks combo but it'll depend on your budget... -
Tuned to 38Hz, accuracy probably wasn't a concern For a driver that Tom Nousiane liked so much...

What brand of wood (or wood-looking) veneer have you guys had good luck with? I'm looking for something to cover the top and bottom metal parts of the Maggies, PE has iron-on and self-adhesive stuff, I'd think something iron-on would be more durable... Maybe Zalytron or Madisound has a better selection...hmmm.

Rear speakers don't do anything useful. -

Unless you're going right away with 5.1 surround, I can think of a lot better options for amplification than a generic Pioneer receiver... -
Yeah, going to have to get the baffle wet enough so it soaks through to the other side, all of the glue is behind the baffle
-
OK, so what's the trick for loosening cured wood glue? I've tried the heat gun...don't think it's getting hot enough on the other side of 3/4" plywood to start undoing anything...next step is setting the jigsaw to 3/4" depth and going to town on it...

It's a...umm...start?

Just don't bring it down here to work on I'm done with shaft-style radios...
