Yes, you can have high SPL in the very literal sense of the term and still have very realistic SQ. This is a goal I'm going for...I like when this happens. But what happens is people take "SPL" to mean lots of subwoofers and lots of subbass - which is not SQ. As soon as you can easily localize the subbass, poof, SQ has now gone out the window.
-
I'm just curious, have you heard any SQ competition vehicles or maybe a demo room at a high-end audio store? You're free to believe whatever you want, but I'm just curious what your reference is.
-
Still doesn't make it "SQ"... See, but that's the wrong approach to take if you're truly into that. I totally agree with Dave Brooks in the "stupid loud" thing - but that takes a front stage that can play those high volumes realistically, without distorting or losing linearity...and that's a lot harder to do than putting some subs in the back and sending them kW's. If you're into a flat response at earsplitting volumes, the way to go about it is to work on the front stage first, then worry about blending the subbass to that. Don't get me wrong, I like things loud - hell, otherwise I wouldn't be building BIB's or wanting to get Altecs or other really high-efficiency designs. But when it comes to the subbass, it has to concede to the mains, always, if you want a flat response or something approaching it.

Is a single ICON 12 ported to the optimal specs loud?
JimJ replied to bmr4life's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
What is "loud" to you? -
Why, when their goal can be accomplished by something cheaper? That's like recommending a Z06 for someone who just needs to go to the supermarket. There's a simple fact that you aren't going to hear the benefits of higher-priced sets in a situation like that - can't argue with that, it's not going to happen. So if you can't hear the difference, why would I recommend it? And as for the "turn it down" comment...well, it's either going to be us saying that, or the police saying that...and I think we're cheaper Also, please show me where I've personally attacked anyone for their choice. Usually, as soon as it turns to "man I want it to bang yo" I back out of the thread, because it stops being interesting to me.

Not a Jeep but a glorified minivan I find that comment amusing when it is about a vehicle that matches an E39 M5 in the quarter and to 60 (or an 04 M3, 50th Anniversary Corvette, 92 Viper, a Lamborghini Diablo....) and pulls 0.90 on the skid. I'd love to see someone do that to a mini-van. Sure it isn't a classic "Jeep" and you can't take it offroad, but considering how most SUV are used it is a much more fitting way to build one. On road use only, but a hell of a lot of fun to drive. This one might...

What if I started saying I wanted to compete in SPL with a single sealed 8"? Would you just say "Fine", or would you try to correct me to something that would work better? When they say "SQ", that immediately means a few things that aren't subjective. If they want SPL, then they should say that. Because then, they'll get recommendations that actually fit what they're looking for. It's really pretty simple.

15's for extended cab truck, SSA, eD, Mach5, AA?
JimJ replied to creyc's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
The newer ones will be in your price range... -
Not if you know what you're doing...
-
And to hopefully answer your question, the options that would work for you are the P-Chamfer, Cooling, Hi-Xmax coil, 3rd magnet, daily gap, and maybe the Universal option if you want to change voice coil impedance later... Please tell me you understand that...

Who knows. But there's a better chance of the BL using that power more effectively.
-
Honestly, with the amount of power you have, I'd probably choose the BL over the BTL for your application.
-
i just want to know what do i need and dont need if you were me what options would you get i will be using it daily with 1000.1 @ 2ohms for about three months and will upgrade soon to 2000.1 @ 2ohms

I would probably get two Mag 12's and keep the same amp you have currently -
I don't know how else to explain it easier than what's written there...

I need a sub that will hit loud and low in an IB setup.
JimJ replied to bmr4life's topic in Test 1, 2, 3...
If you're just looking for something to shake the car, IB is about as far from what you want as possible... -
Figured, real IR has a similar effect but it's a royal PITA to work with...have to load/unload it in complete darkness, even in 35mm rolls...

It's in the SSA Camry thread. Extremely low, loud is relative. They get loud enough to be realistic -
I do like that shot, not sure if it's infrared film or a fake filter but it's cool

1200W RMS is way more than you'll need. After hearing an Icon IB, I'd have to recommend it...maybe a Creative Sounds driver as well. -

The wheels that come on some of those SRT products are way too big, IMO...even the ones that were on Dave's truck were too big for something I'd consider a "4x4"...

Just get whatever's cheaper for you. Really, if you're not concerned about timbre and tonality, just get as many sets as you can make fit and it'll work for what you want.
