JL 13w7 box for best spl how many cubic feet
Billy Jack replied to Billy Jack's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
I have a 13.5 cubic foot trunk so yea it will be tight if it even fits but I'm gonna use every inch for the box. Like I said the trunk openings are small so I may have to build it in place to use all the available space. -
I don't know man I think my chrome Helo's are as good as anything out there. I constantly get complement's on them. I know there are wheels that cost more but I actually picked them cause I loved the look. Can't beat black car with chrome wheels.

Are those helo wheels on that blazer? I have the chrome helo 844's on my avenger they look very similar to yours just chrome with black ascents instead of solid black. And nice system by the way bet that thing gets crazy loud.

Well I used a box calculator and 3 cubes and 33hz was the best for spl I could get on the graph. That's after displacement and bracing. -

Looks like I'm going with 3 cubic feet tuned to 33hz. According to the program that seems to be my best middle ground. Loud but still musical. -

I already did my man several times I said I wanted more output (spl). And the reason I said obvious reasons is I have heard they do it to give their subs greater power handling and make it seem as though they do best in small enclosures to sell more units. You answered one of my questions you said that wasn't based in fact so can I assume their recommendations are actually for optimal output while still sounding decent. I do know they say the spec ported box will gain 3-4db over the sealed box. Now all I need to know is will a larger then recommended yield more output and make better use of the power I have available. Doesn't have to be an exact mathematic equation just a ballpark guess would be fine. -

All I asked is, if manufacturers suggest smaller boxes for obvious reasons or if it was just a rumor or is it in fact better to build a little bit bigger to get more output and make more of your available power. Doesn't seem to be a impossible question to answer. I was mostly looking for some advice from somebody more knowledgable then me. -

I wasn't talking about you jcarter I was referring to M5's comment about JL posted its specs for people like me and how I was unwilling to even try when I litterely just agreed and said yes I'm gonna plug the numbers and see. Dude just sounds like he loathes me cause I wouldn't toss $500 worth of equipment in the garbage and go buy a active front stage when he suggested it. -

Yes that's the plan street legal, but I was just asking if anybody had first hand experience with the w7's and knew if the JL specs where best for output (spl) or if I would get a better number from going bigger. I know fat box has a spl box that some say hits like crazy but there is no way to get the specs without buying the $600 box. Just thought somebody on here could give me some insight no big deal though I will figure it out myself. Maybe if I was asking a question about my crescendo amps and sundown subs I would get a little better answer on this site. Probably the JL hate I'm getting. Lol -

Ow and like I said before I have them in the sealed JL manufactured pro wedge box. It's not very big at all just tall mostly. My box will be shorter and a lot deaper. -

Well JL recommends 2.35 but I was thinking 3 cubes a piece. And maybe going a little higher on the tuning. -
Mine looks very similar except I used the phone rings on the front and the back plus the little rubber pre made boxes I call them baffles not sure the exact name but that's what sonic had them listed as. The wood pieces where listed as spacers.

Ow that's exactly what I'm gonna do, but I was just wondering if I should go a little bigger if possible, or just build it to JL's specs. Would a bigger box and slightly higher tuning give me more output? Thanks for the reply. -

Ow yea it is loud but I'm hard of hearing and just want more spl then sq. And it will be 2 13w7 on 2 HD1200/1's so 2400 watts. Right now it is just one sub and one amp but as soon as I get the box built and beef up my electrical I'm gonna run them both. -

I know what JL recommends but I have always heard that it's better to go a little bit bigger for more output. Just asking the experts what there take on the go bigger rumor. Right now I have them in the factory prowedge box's but only one would fit because of how tall they are so I'm gonna build a dual slop port enclosure for them both. So is it true your better off to go bigger or is that just internet b.s? I probably can't go to much bigger but maybe a little. -

Well I meant like not just a burp box like I'm gonna be playing music on it not just sign waves for competition guess I should have said that my bad. How many cubes and what tuning would you recommend to tear the roof off this dodge. -
Ok thanks for the update.
-
yea you can buy the same baffles which I was just calling a spacer (I'm from the south) and everything to properly mount from sonic and I'm sure a few other websites, they may have them here on ssa not sure. But I like how he built that enclosure into the door that's dedication there I wish I had time do projects like that, maybe someday. Right now kid and business keep me stressed and running.

Man I really need this to match my other one but this rain has killed my business and my funds. If it last I might try and get it in a week or two but I doubt it will pretty popular amp right now. How old is the amp I know it can't be to old they ain't been out to long.

The Crossover Crossroads - Active or Passive
Billy Jack replied to Cj the newbie's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
I never said it was hard I just said it was easier for me because I already have my system. So going out and buying a processor then doing away with all the crossovers in place is what wouldn't make any sense to me since it's sounding great to me already. Yes I would get more power I don't need, yes I would get more flexibility I honestly don't believe I need, but ha it might sound better. Ow and I did try cutting the rears out, just out of curiosity and it just doesn't sound near as good. Less output and it threw off my soundstage. Now maybe if I went active it would have worked but without spending anymore money right now it's more then good enough for me. -

Go to you tube and watch tutorials and read what experienced installers are doing not just people trying to sell you 20 year old designs with a new name put on it. Heck go to the JL site they go over this stuff in detail in there how to's so does crutchfield. Some really good info in there it won me some throphy's and that and first hand experience is how I learned.
