50ohm at resonance isn't unusual at all.
-
Impedance always spikes at the resonant frequency like that Nothing unusual or out of the ordinary about that at all.

Not really sure what you mean by that. Decently low Q, decently low Fs (which is what a lot of SQ people prefer), good inductance and a pretty flat and symmetrical BL for only being a standard overhung design. Low sensitivity, but he wanted a small enclosure design. Pretty good linear excursion capabilities aswell. Sleeved motor which should help with distortion aswell. For $150 it's a hell of a subwoofer. Even at $220, which it will be at after the presale, it'll still more than compete with everything in it's price range. It should give the Rl-p, for example, a run for it's money.

In a standard overhung the coil has to be longer than twice the Xmax. Such is not so with the XBL^2 drivers. That's one of it's advantages over standard overhung; more or the same Xmax with a shorter coil (all things equal, less Mms, less inductance). XBL^2 drivers don't get their Xmax from using a long coil....they get it by using a taller topplate. But I don't know off hand know the length of the older RE XXX coil. But it's less than the total thickness of the topplate

Teehee....yeah, I was hoping my inquiring would turn into a delightful conversation about the technology and it's advantages/disadvantages, and about SS having the first production driver to use it.....but the damn guy wouldn't stop simply trying to sell me last years models, so we never even actually talked about the new Eclipse subs (other than "he can order them if I want them....but I could get the older models that're in inventory for 'cheap'". Oh well....such is life at the local dealer Makes me wish we had more than 1 local Eclipse dealer...LOL

Will they understand it? No. But it's a fancy term to tell your buddies when you're showing off your awesome new subwoofers. And that fancy term sure pulled you in in the first place, with the salesman talking about how "linear" (whatever in the hell that term means, the consumer is probably thinking to themselves) this famn dancy new motor design is. I'd be willing to bet 90% of the salesman selling the subs don't have a clue how the technology actually works, or how it works to "improve" things. I was actually in my local dealer Friday inquiring about the new Eclipse SW8200 subwoofers (I'll admit, those have me seriously interested), and the manager (not just a salesman, but the store manager) was trying to sell me on last years models that he still has in stock. Ver batim "They're basically the same thing". Errmmm.....not really Ofcourse he was just trying to get rid of some inventory...but I wouldn't be surprised if "new terminology" was really all he sees in the Eclipse subs and the LMT motor design. I didn't argue with him....just politely said "no thanks", and turned and walked out. Though I should have asked how much I could have gotten the older subs for....he kept using the word "cheap", which as you know is a rarity at a B&M shop.

One thing to remember.....anybody who uses XBL^2 likely has a NDA (non-disclosure agreement) with Adire and/or their buildhouse, and the company using it is not required to disclose/advertise their useage of XBL^2 if they do not want to. Which means.....there may be far more XBL^2 drivers on the market than you know about, simply because 1) Dan/Adire/the buildhouse cannot disclose who and what companies are using the technology, and 2) the company using the technology isn't promoting/advertising their useage of the technology. Dan has made mention many times in the past that there are far more XBL^2 drivers out on the market (car audio and home audio) than we realize.

There's a pic of an MT coil.

They are wound one on top of the other.

Take the ID's, in my opinion. More displacement, so they have the potential for more output. And you know they'll sound damn good doing it. EDIT: I missed the first option of a single 15" Rl-p. The Rl-p and the pair of ID's have pretty close displacement potentials. In a few weeks I'd be able to tell you how the ID's sound compared to an Rl-p. But I'd limit it to those two options..the ID's and the Rl-p.

Looking At Headunits, You Decide.
Impious replied to CBFryman's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Not sure if you're into this....but if you watch the forums, you can find good condition used Eclipse 8053's for around $250. I would pick that over all of your above options. It, however, does not play MP3's. -
http://forum.carstereos.org/showthread.php?t=56398 Compares and contrasts XBL^2, LMT and Split Coil in detail. Downside: Given from a "biased" author (Dan Wiggins).....lets face it...you're always going to like your technology more than someone else's, otherwise you wouldn't be using/licensing it.

http://www.soundstream.com/subwoofers-ri.htm Look very interesting. Wouldn't mind listening to some, and maybe seeing what their pricetage is.

It's sort of like looking at hookers when you have a wife. You can look and fantasize....just don't buy one

By looking at the pics, it's appears the motor is underhung and that they stuck a set of magnets right inside the topplate. Being computer generated, the pics are kinda hard to decipher though Someone should post it over on SIN and see what Dan W. thinks of it.

New Ref's?
Impious replied to Aaron Clinton's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Yup, SS is bringing back the Ref's. Supposed to be very good quality amplifiers from the info I've heard. Quality, close tolerance parts and a design similar to the original refs. Only thing I wish they did was make them stable into low impedances like the older Refs. -
www.acoustic-visions.com Only some of their subwoofers are presently available, however.

Big boobs are only sexy up to a certain point. Beyond that, it's almost gross.

Maybe you took a wrong turn and ended up in Mehico
-
Man, I am so tempted to sell all of my amplifiers and pick up a pair of those new Alpines. I *think* I might even be able to swing them price wise if I can sell all of my current amps for the right price. I would be sad getting rid of 6 amps, just so I can own 2 (and my option to go active would fly out the window)....but man, those things are just so god damned drop dead sexy!!

Milo is a scamming SOB. He needs to DIAF

Should have just told him they were stock I'm just glad my state doesn't have inspections (yet)

Never done it. Never will. I moved out of my experimentation stage many moons ago.

When you conduct this same experiment in a scientifically controlled setting, with a scientifically valid experiment, let me know The differences you heard are likely due to either power or gain differences. That simple.
