I am wanting to build a new sub for my room. It will consist of a Soundsplinter RL-P 18 on a 500 watt Oaudio plate amp. I have the 18 already, but i still need to buy the plate amp. My question is about the enclosure and placement of the enclosure. The box specs on the Soundsplinter website say 12.8 cubes tuned to 18hz. I want to put the sub under my desk, but im not sure were to put the sub /port. ill try and post a picture of the desk and were it is compared to the rest of my system. http:// theres the desk i want to put it under http:// theres the desk to the left, and my couch to the right. then directly to the right is were my tv/reciever and towers are. The max dimensions under the desk is length=54 height=25.25 depth=22.5. I plugged some numbers into winisd but im not sure what all the graphs mean. Thanks for the help!

good idea ku. Thats what i will do. thanks

to ku40, the top of the desk is the limit for my height of the box, so if i made it down firing, i would need to subtract some for the space needed under the driver, making the box smaller. to m5, would pillows or stuffing help since the bracing will take up a couple cubes? to oldschool, I know it is a little overkill but i already have the woofer from my car, and thought that i could get a 12.8 cube box under my desk. I might consider a sealed box, but if i can build a ported box it would be that much better. thanks for all of the input guys.

I cant do a sonotube or a table, my room is just not big enough. I orginally wanted to build a sonotube but the tubes diameter is too large to put any were without its being in the way. is there any problems with it being under the desk firing out along with the port? I cant downfire it either because i dont have enough airspace for it. I can get around 13-13.5 cubes excluding bracing and woofer displacment. Would it really make a difference if it is a little less than 12.8 cubes? Im going to window brace it. If it being too small is a problem, would adding stuffing or pillows help?

oooo man! i didnt see that one! i thought i did my research! lol. but i think ill just use my hdmi for video only and plug it from my ps3 directly into my tv, and use an optical cable i have for audio. Im not too concerned about having supreme HD though. My Tv is only a 720p Emerson and i wont be upgrading for awhile.

Sorry i forgot some of the details! lol. My room is 13ft by 11ft. I have a Harman Kardon AVR 247 that will be here tomorrow, polk monitor 50 floorstanders, CS1 center, and R15 rears. My gaming system is a ps3. I modeled a box on the re audio box calculator with a 3 by 23.5in. port with is about 70 sq in. of port. the length of the port is 34 inches. I heard that the re calculator isnt accurate, but thats the only one i know how to use. Is 70 sq in. enough?

It should be alright in there. i put a little ten in there to see were the nulls and sweet spots were, and it sounded ok from were i sit. I still dont know were i should put the sub and port, and how much port area i should use though.

Well i wanted to put it behind my couch, but the box will be way to big. Its pretty much either under the desk and thats it. my room is very small.

Any input on the amp or sub would greatly be appreciated!! thanks

Well im trying to contact Jacob from sundown about those SI bm 10's he reconed, for my ht/music setup in my room. Im wondering if that sub on an O audio 500 watt plate amp at 8 ohms (385 watts) is a decent setup for what i want. I have Polk monitor 50 floorstanders, a CS1 center, r15's for rears and im about to buy a Harman Kardon AVR 247 reciever. It is for about 50% games, 25% music and 25% movies. Is there anything else i should consider? (such as a different sub or amp) and How big should i build the box, what should i tune it to, and how much port area should i give it? here are the specs of the sub: RE: 6.89 ohms Z: 8 ohms Fs: 27.2 Hz Qes: 0.56 Qms: 3.32 Qts: 0.48 Le: 2.8 mH Vas: 31.1 L BL: 16.2 NA Mms: 124 grams Power: 400 watts RMS

Im in need of a new home theater reciever for my room. My older sony reciever finally gave out the other day, and i cant stand listening to my games and movies through my tv speakers! I dont have too much money to spend on one(roughly $200). I found a couple Harman Kardon HK AVR 247's on ebay that were going for a good price, and i was wondering if that reciever will suit my setup. If not, could someone point me in the right direction? I have Polk monitor 50 floorstanders, polk r15 rears, and a Polk CS1 center. Its manly 50% games, 25% music, and 25% movies. thanks

Anyone have input on this reciever? I need to get one before call of duty mw2 comes out!

I just got a pair of jl w0 8's to mess around with. How big should i build a box for the pair, and what should i tune it to? They will be in my room, off of about 80 watts a piece.(thats all i have to work with) I want it to have authority in the lows(25-35), and thats about it. The setup is mainly for music. i know i shouldn't expect much from these eights, but i think it should be a step up from my yamaha 10 off of 40 watts. lol. thanks!
-
The original box i have sounds terrible. it has no lows at all, and it is really small. then i put the ten in another box for a sony 8 that is about 1.5 cubes tuned really high, i think it turned out to be like 56 hz or something, and that even sounded better than the original box. I think if i build a new box i can get some lows in my room. i just measured up the wood and the maximum width i can get for the entire box is 22 inches. i plugged some numbers into the re box calculator and could only get a box tuned around 28 hz, and about 1.6 cubes.
-
thanks for the info. i figured out what you mean about the port talking up a lot of space. I cant make a box for the two with the wood i have, because its left overs from my cars system. I think i'm going to scrap the idea of using the two eights and just design a new box for a yamaha ten i have. I cant find the t/s parameters for it, but is there a ballpark size, tuning, and slot port area you could give me?
-
one more question. How much port area should there be for the two?
-
sweet! thanks man!

thanks guys. ill try around 2 cubes at 25 hz. im really just doing this for fun. i cant sell the subs because they came out of my dads f350 because he needs to sell the truck. Ill look for the T/S parameters but i dont think they would measure them on there low end subs. but if i do ill post them up here. thanks!

RCA grounding
mwerling1212 replied to mwerling1212's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
any other input on how i can ground the negative battery terminal? -
I tried to ground my rca today because i have really bad engine noise, but it didnt work. I took speaker wire and touched it to the rca. (the outside metal part) then touched it to metal in my car, but the noise was still there. Am i doing it wrong? Could it be something else?
