I would take that s-10 and make a straight-up boomer out of it. Older S-10 s like yours have been my choice for anything intensive and have always been easier and cheaper to fix, and tighten up given their simplicity and straightforward electrical systems.

Shipping alone on that puppy may be around 100 pounds sterling to start. Make sure you have enough power to bang it though.

Go with the Fi. It's a better made product and you have better support if something happens to it. Crotchfield is overpriced retail as it is.

4500 bass songs...How would the rest of us be able to get at some of these since many great old bass trax are no longer available? I'm not having much luck rebuilding my collection. PM me with links...

Good job there. Wait until you get that sub the power it needs and you'll see a huge difference. What song is that?

Running car amp in house off of PC PSU
mdexxxiv replied to shizzzon's topic in Computers / Electronics / Music / Games
You would be better off with a motorhome power inverter. Some of these convert 110V into 12V @ 40 amps or something like that. It depends on what type you get. These can be found at any RV repair shop for under $200. -
The banks in Europe are starting to go the same route we did. The biggest Dutch bank was bailed out and so was the biggest mortgage holder in the UK. Invest in metal because the current fiat-based currency model doesn't affect it.

The cosmetics aren't quite done yet but I got the sub running and with what little (in comparison) power it's getting from that old Opti 50C off stock electrical I'm more than happy with it. Once upgrades are done and the 3000d is here, it will REALLY bang! The board isn't allowing me to put up a video due to some stupid code thing, so find it at "maximusde34" on youtube. youtube video at "maximusde34" not sure how to put videos on here!

It came to about 7.5 ft3 tuned to 32 hz. Bangs pretty good for a little under 800 watts.
-
Oh, good deal. Thanks, I tried to do it the other way and got that keyboard vomit you saw above. Thanks for your assistance.

169 dB? Well, he could hit that depending on how much black powder he crammed his amps with.

Let's see... the market crashed today by about 700 points, just today the market lost $1 trillion on paper, ($1 trillion in one day! Holy chit!) , 401k's are worthless, the bailout hasn't gone through yet, we're in deep chit all over. I not only had my ass handed to me by the stock market, they shipped it by UPS to me and broke it before it got here. I would take that 100k and buy gold with it. Krugerands, bullion, anything that can be stashed and used to live on. So-called "hard money". As we've seen, investments in stock are shaky at best and putting money into retirement accounts is tantamount to throwing your money away. Gold moves up and down but won't ever fall enough to affect anything. I started buying it when it was around 250.00 per ounce and haven't stopped. I knew this chit was coming when the housing bubble started up(I'm in the business) and I know what's coming and it's going to suck. Bad. Gold is around $870.00 per ounce today but will double in 3 years. My advice: Buy it now while you have the money now, because in 2-3 years you won't have it when you're living in your woofer box and burning your cash to keep your ass warm.

Find a BatCap 8400 and use that. It pumps 8400-9600 amps AND works as a great street battery and only weighs under 80 lbs. It replaces 1000 lbs of batteries.

These subs are durable out the box...Throw in the bass CD of your choice and bang the hell out of them. You won't be disappointed.

What sucks is that of all those '90's subs, pretty much NONE of those units have survived to this day. Maybe a dozen old Lanzar LC's exist, I have the last LC18 on the planet. Subs just don't last and it's impossible to repair them economically or restore them when the lines are discontinued or changed. How much of the SSA stuff made this year will be around in 10-20 years? None of it. It's a supplantable item like everything else.
-
The problem is that the surviving companies like Lanzar and Rocky Fuzzgate went to the cheaper mass marketing strategy that sees product made overseas by people who don't even know what the product is, and then it's whored out at Bust Buy! The industry went from good solidly engineered product to mass-produced blingy flimsy crap you can get on ebay for way under dealer cost. Lanzar went down the chitter when they were bought out. Zapco held together but they quit making their Studio amps. I loved their Studio 500's. I ran 4 of these to 4 Stroker 18's and it BANGED. I want one of these again. With a damping factor of over 900, who wouldn't? Cerwin Vega as we knew it back in the day is gone. They are around now as a marketing company-(they have nothing to do with the original CV)-that sticks it's name on Chinese mass-production drivers (You can order them yourself from the suppliers listed in Voice Coil Magazine!) I used to sell CV in the mid-90's and having used the old Strokers, the new ones don't compare to them. They suck. The problem is quality is sacrificed for quantity, you can buy this crap everywhere and it isn't really that solid. The big-name companies aren't a presence in competitions anymore now it's the little guys who make top notch stuff like Fi and Sundown, etc that appear to be leading the industry and keeping the spirit of competition from dying out.

I just got my BTL 18 today, it is now installed and even off that old opti 50c, it's louder than hell. It is louder than I thought it would be. The back wall of my cab below the window flexes 1/4 inch, and the slider window is going to break (possibly today). This is one outstanding product. Even if my window does break, I will be satisfied to the top. Thanks Scott and Shawn for assisting me and I definitely look forward to doing business again and promoting the product! A Video will be put up soon.

Nothing sucks like having all your chit and not being able to do anything with it. It will be worth the wait though. Did you get an 18?

18" FI Q. not QUITE loud enough... time for a change maybe....
mdexxxiv replied to snb778's topic in General Audio
Get a BTL, that should be plenty loud. -
lol,Trade for a Sundown 3000d ?
-
In my truck with that BTL18, my passenger window drops down about 1 inch, my tailgate handle quit, my front bumper has some sort of ringing effect to it. Granted, the previous system caused this but the BTL being actually louder exacerbates it. My old 88 s-10 had the shell crack from the system, the sunroof broke, extra cab side window popped out at a show, ground effects loose, dash trouble, suspension & tranny problems. The stereo actually led to this truck being given away to someone who had to rebuild it because I couldn't fix it fast enough. 4 Stroker 18's tend to break things.
-
Yep, look at the old idw's, alpine, lanzar......... I still have a vintage Lanzar LC18(minus dustcap) that i've had sine high school in 1989 with the accordion surround and all. It still bangs but seems like a wet headphone next to my BTL.

Well said. It took you all that time to write that and you still ain't got the mdf roof done... hahha j/p Ouch! I went to pull the headliner down only to discover that the front half of it is now glued to the roof thanks to that expanding foam. I screwed myself good there BUT I have a build log for that BTL 18 on the way complete with a video! I'll put up a step by step for the roof, I'll do the best I can w/out pics.

BristaBrock is right on the mark. Connect with your school's A/V dept and you can learn much from them and teach them too. Once you are established you can offer to help your fellow students with their home and mobile projects. That's how I got into audio. M5 isn't trying to bash you for anything, he wants you to get an understanding on how things work in this field so you can go into it with an open mind and be able to run with it and gain respect so you can make a mark. Be creative. The best thing I can tell you is to learn it so you can teach it to someone else. We have all been clueless about this until we listened to others who had experience and learned all we could. Most of us here are passionate about audio because it is something we enjoy, we do it well and we are the ones everyone else looks to for trusted experience and knowledge. For some of us it is a hobby and for some of us it is a career. It is what you make it. The rest is up to you.
