Box for two BL 18's Port Calculations Help
christobear replied to Jeepjones85's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
16 sq inches per cubic foot is supposed to be ideal as far as i know -
if you think you might ever add another BL, then get the Fosgate. but other than that, why do you want a new amp with the same power ratings?
-
how much do you charge for custom boxes i dont think he actually builds boxes, he's just gonna help this guy figure out his design. look at fisher customs if you want a really sweet custom box
-
You know, every time I try and explain it, a bunch of people get all fired up and refuse to make the mental leap... But, what do I know about gain adjustment/funtion, I just been building amps from scratch for the last 15 years..... LOL..... you want to give it a nice little simple explanation?
-
not very good build quality and highly overrated wattages think about it, a 1600 watt, 1ohm stable amp for under 300 bucks?

i have an Orion H2 12 inch sub its rated at 2000 wrms my amp is rated 1200 wrms i've had it for quite a while now and im starting to get some mechanical noise, sorta sounds like its bottoming out, but i know thats not the case b/c it has like a 4 inch travel, and its def. not moving that far. i took it to the shop i bought i from and the guy promised that the sub was not blown, but said there might be something wrong with the leads. he said he wont send it in to Directed without the original reciept, which after like 7 months i of course dont have. its not that huge of a deal cause i think im gonna get a Fi BL pretty soon, but do you guys have any idea what could possibly be wrong? ps. i know im underpowering the sub, but i really doubt that i was clipping it b/c my gain is at 50%, no bass boost and i really never pushed the sub to its mechanical limits
-
screw it all. i need a new sub!
-
first sub i got was an Alpine type r. a similar thing happened to me, after a little while it strated making a slapping noise on certain notes. i finally took it out of the box and it turned out it was this clear sticker that protected the chrome part of the sub. it had come loose and was flapping around.
-
ok. well the dust cap is definitely NOT loose. and i cant really see much more of the sub cause there is a big plastic shroud covering the voice coils and leads...
-
thanks for the suggestions.
-
Fi definitely, im not a real big fan of the Type R's
-
dont know exactly how much power is going to it, i know there's no such thing as "underpowering" i just say that cause my amp doesnt have the power to give the sub what it really wants and i havent metered the load, but that sounds like a good idea....exactly how would i go about doing that, multimeter on the VC terminals? if only one VC is running, is there a fix for that? or should i buy myself a new sub?
-
definitely get a new deck, it will improve sound quality overall bigger subs are louder, hit lower notes, and require larger boxes (typically) first you need to figure out what you are looking for in a system (loudness, sound quality, etc), how much you are willing to spend, and how much of your trunk you are willing to give up. you could get a system with perfect SQ, or one that will blow out your windows. you can do subs that will fit under your seats, or take up your whole trunk. you could spend 500 dollars, or you could spend 5,000. and anything in between it all depends on what you want
-
the website says it safe at 1 ohm, go for it. run it at 850 and you will likely end up cranking the gain and blowing up your sub

I know I have a car audio addiction when......
christobear replied to Aaron Clinton's topic in General Audio
....when you're up so late at night that you start getting delusional, make a slip on a table saw and nearly send a 2 foot long chunk of MDF through your stomach, pass out for an hour, then get up and keep working -
Batteries?
christobear replied to DjFreddyFred's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
are you also on the f150online forum? your system looks similar to one i saw on there -
a capacitor is not the solution to the problem of a lacking electrical system. a cap doesnt create any more power, only a higher output alternator can create more power, and only a bigger battery can store a sufficiently greater amount of energy. a 2 farad cap stores about 100 watts worth of power and will NOT prevent dimming

the link says "power handling severely dropped when the square wave was applied in this test. Time to failure was cut by a factor of 4 for most drivers." doesn't that mean that clipping is bad?....or am i missing something with the whole "non-normalized power" thing? i dunno, its always hard to judge how loud people expect things to be.....maybe he really wants 2 18's but defintely, an 18 would be tough to fit in that car, unless he glasses the whole trunk. im struggling to design a box for an 18 in my xB.....but i think i've got it figured out
-
i think he's saying that the 15 won't be as loud as he wants and so he's going to end up clipping the amp trying to get more volume
-
thanks, just wanted to make sure
-
the actual diameter of the BL 18? need to see how im going to have to design my box
-
is it 18 measuring the rubber surround or is that the complete diameter of the sub?
-
2009 Scion xB current setup is Orion 12" in about 1.5ft ported basically, as long as i dont get any significant mechanical noise from the sub, or leaky noises from the box (which depends on my ability to build it), i'll be happy with the SQ. cause right now, my setup sounds like chit at high volume
