Hey guys, just thought i'd see if any of you were interested in checking out my progress walling my spare car. It's a 1995 Hyundai Excel (Accent for CAN/USA) hatch, pretty boring and poorly made car, but it's good enough to keep, cheap enough to sacrifice to be walled. Here's what the car looks like (not actual car) Had it for 5 months as a daily driver, i've had the front stage installed, battery and elec partially done, and a temp sub setup installed. But now it's time to go all out and have some fun with the subs. Sometime this week i'll be recieving two Mach5 IXL.18's, and the plan calls for 12cubes ported @ 30hz for some nice lows. Quick parts list for anyone who's interested: - Alpine 9886i Headunit - Polk Momo 6.5" splits - Epsilon EA5000D monoblock - Atomic APSPL 10's x2 - Magnat 360 classic 4ch amp - Odyssey PC2150 battery I'll copy and paste my posts from another forum into one post, for anyone who wants to see the previous work. Cheers, feel free to ask any questions.

IXL 18.2.2 - Good for daily ground pounder? VS HDC3 18's?
RAD replied to WOT's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Yeah sealed up it dropped from 150 to 148, but window open it still did 151+ on music P.S. we completely smashed it last night, chips and pieces flying out onto the crowd was dangerous but they loved it -

A little too good... -

Can't comment on the rock music... but they pound out lows. Here's four IXL's excelling in my Hyundai excel! -
Looking good so far, keep working!

From what i hear, the build quality on the Mass Destructions were poor, it was common for the soft parts to fail. Could just retune the box for BTL's, run the napalms in the meantime while you save/buy new subs.
-
I'd be hoping so with 4 18's in a diamond! Should have numbers and some vids by next weekend, cant get that 4th sub fast enough.
-
crosspug: no updates yet, just waiting on sub #4 to land at my door, get the auto fixed and im off pounding again. Hopefully with #4 in, it will make the enclosure volume more optimal to the recommended 4.5cubes. That, and with more cone area, and loading the amp lower, im hoping it'll do 150+ on music all day long.

There's a comp coming up on the 30th, i'll let you know how it goes! Hopefully still in the 150's, too bad the next shipment of IXL's wont come in time for me to have 4 of them running Highest was 151.5 @ 51hz with the ported setup; not enough port area held it back.

Car: 1995 Hyundai Excel (Oz version of Accent) Electrical: Big 3, 00gauge, Stock 90A alt, Odyssey 2150 Amp: Epsilon EA5000D @ 1.3ohm - ~3400w Subs: 3 x Mach 5 IXL 18"s Box: 24 cubes @ 40hz Mic: TermLab Tone: 49hz Score: 151.5 Legal Has plenty more in it, just redone for 4x18's in a Quasi 4th order.
-
4 18's sealed ? :bigclap: Technically sealed, but its kind of a Quasi 4th order bandpass. Hits hard and sounds good doing it, its designed for 18 cubes before drivers and the manifold; perfect for 4 IXL's, so when theyre in, it should be something to experience ...
-
Just got the newsletter (which i got a mention in!) Too bad their arrival is on the 28th, theres a club demo on the 27th i was hoping to have 4 IXL's rocking for.

I guess no-one saw the funny (or serious) side of my image

I realize the cone wont move as much, but audible output at low frequencies is poor compared to having more port area per sub; 3 subs 200sqin vs 2 subs 180 sqin. Either way, Sealed sounds great with these, but Marks recommended sealed volume vs the 'optimal' Qtc of .707 still intrigues me?
-
I'd be that gent Now i have 3 ported in my wall, and the output is quite good; it won me SPL King at a major Autoshow recently, 151.5db from 33hz tuning, a 4kw amp, one battery and 90A alt if thats any help to you. Huge bang for buck, and with the gains down it blends into music quite well for me. I'm playing with more of these in a sealed box, and its amazing how an 18" sub the price of an entry level 12" performs. Cant compare to a Fi sorry, because no-one sells them in Australia. Only downside i can see with them is that they require fairly large boxes, and huge amounts of port area: I have 24cubes, 200sqin of port and its not enough to reach anywhere near Xmax at lower notes in the 30 something Hz region. P.S. Mark, when are more coming to Oz, i need a 4th sub! P.P.S recommended sealed volume for the IXL 18's is 4.6, but gives a Qtc of 0.63? Should'nt it be 3.5 for 0.707?

You 100% on this? I have an Odssey 2150, i'm after a 2nd battery to run parallel, another odyssey is worth $800 but i got a good offer on a hc2400, but havent taken it up since i didnt think it would be ok. Any advice?

My modest wall O subs (MJ18's and IXL18.4's included)
RAD replied to TheEAR's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
You know its awesome, so we dont need to state the obvious... but why all the different drivers? -
Hah, its all good mate dont stress. Like i said, the pics and help is much appreciated, just a matter of doing the footwork here in Oz and finding some old drivers and sorting out some recones.
-
lately i've heard quite a few bigger name companies have used various TC sounds motors on their own sub lineups, and i'm wondering, is it possible to salvage the motors (and baskets?) to recone these subs? If so, which models should i be looking out for? I know Eclipse used some in their Ti and 8200 range, and Lightning Storm, Ground Zero etc, but i think Eclipse are going to be the easiest to track down. Also, who can recone these, and to what size? I've found that Fi can recone them in this thread, but it looks like their baskets arent a great fit for most motors. Any help appreciated guys
-
I see what you mean now. That makes things a little more complicated, although i know a couple of engineers who could get something made up on a lathe for that spacer. The coil is the only problem, if worst comes to worst i can always handball it to a local recone specialist in the city, they've been in contact with FI before i believe. Cheers for the pics mate.

I made a quick vid, not great quality and dubbed sound since its an older kodak camera, but its something. Look closely and you'll see the steering wheel and windscreen flex. If you noticed, i have 3 18's in there now. Needs another battery or two to keep the volts up, no doubt theyre getting low on full tilt!
-
Cool, thanks for the help guys, i have a fairly good idea of what i'm looking for now. But stovebolt, if you could, pictures would be appreciated mate ! Oh, and thanks for the offers, but unless you guys can ship those unused motors to Australia on the cheap
-
I read perfectly fine thanks, mate. I understand this is not Marks sole business, and i have no hopes of seeing such a driver being made... but i thought while we were throwing wish lists into the ring, i'd throw one in too, and something to suggest it might have an outside chance of working. Choice fits this topic quite well, the spl units dont fly off the shelf because theres dozens of other companies out there making good 12 & 15" drivers too, most if not all more advertised, available and talked about than these. The lack of choice when it comes to 18's in Aus seems to be working well for Mark, i can see the first shipment of IXL.18's is almost gone, and at least four of those can be accounted for from my own word of mouth.
-
If i were to recone them, i'd like to go to 18 if possible, or a 15 at least. Not worried about baskets as long as they work, but why are adaptors needed, will regular 12 spokes not just bolt up to the motor? With the eclipse subs, the 8200 was the TC-9, the Ti was the 3hp/TC-3000, and Ti Pro was the 4hp? or am i wrong? Almost no chance of finding a Ti Pro, but the other two i might.
