dude, get the Audioque headphones. $25 and they sound really good. www.audioque.com and no i am not an audioque nut hugger of a representative of audioque. the headphones just sound great and they're cheap. looking for some cans AQ's are way better then any cans will ever be. In ear monitors are great for traveling and for big booming bass. However.... I got a pair of mid level cans and the destroy my in ears. Both were in the same $400 price range. If you can tolerate on ear the Grados are insanely good for their super low price. i have a cheap pair of sennheiser iem's for that sort of stuff. not sure about the on ear style. i was thinking circumaural would be best for comfort, as i have large ears... I was at a sony story last week and tried a pair of the xb500's on. very comfy but i didn't listen to them enough to say how i'd like them. they were hooked up to a portable movie player.

I'm thinking a set of cans would be best way to establish what a balanced system would sound like. maybe balanced isn't the best word. Essentially, i dont have a reference as to what the system in my car "could" sound like. So my tuning has always been kind of back and forth process. Doesn't help that my music library is shit.

Think it time for some headphone. where can i get some good info? head-fi.org a decent forum?

do you want to keep the stock hu? sound quality for newer oem headunits are pretty decent. is there some functionality he wants to gain like ipod control? if so, you wont even need a converter to get signal for the amps, http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page=webcontent/pages/stereo.html. if you read carefully (dont do it the way this guy says to) you can turn the headunit's low level inputs into RCA inputs for the amps. or the long way around and tap the wires on the speaker output and use a converter or high level input for the amps. next we can talk about speakers, amps, subs, etc. what does he think of the stock system? what is it lacking? from the list of music he listens to, i suggest that he would want to focus on the frontstage first (unless it sounds fine to him)

That's absurd. This time last year they were still $300. My guess is with the 80prs coming out the market for the older ones dropped. i'd like to swap my clarion 785 out for one, mainly for aesthetic reason. features are pretty similar, i think i would gain a few more band of parametric eq.

have you figured out what air space your dealing with yet? I dont think we've ruled out a larger sub yet, honestly. you could put a whole system in for the price of that w7. L7 is cheaper than the sundown, http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-KICKER-S8L7-8-900-WATTS-L7-SUB-CAR-AUDIO-SUBWOOFER-/230794835816?pt=Car_Subwoofers_Enclosures&hash=item35bc71b768&vxp=mtr#ht_1807wt_1396

you need to figure out what size box you can actually fit into the trunk through the opening or through the back seat. if you good with a measuring tape try figuring it out that way. another idea would be to make a mock box using card board boxes.

I'm guessing not all of these copies are created equal. who knows i just like checking out some of the builds on the site, even though the equipment choice is typically ridiculous.

I had a fleet of 20 yr old monster cable that had a bad RCA on one end or the other. I saved them thinking some day I'd need scrap and sure enough had four scraps which was enough for 8 cables. Nice in that they were dual conductor + shield so that I didn't have to try and solder the shield as a lead. I expect no noise...at least until the depth finder is on. I tested it briefly without the LD and the miniDSP works. Sounds so much fucking better than the shit that was in there. Still sounds like the sub amp has some bass processing of some sort on, but that wouldn't surprise me since the 4 chn amp up front is also acting funny. Polk D4000 on the way... Did you get the amps figured out? i've read that quite a few of these amps showing up now. http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/hot-deals/130683-nvx-amps-similar-specs-ppi-phantom.html 15 percent off that nvx seems to still be working. brings it down to 195

I donno, it works pretty well physics would say otherwise

Well it's either a minidsp, or I find something else. on Madisound they have a sweet kit with some fostex, folded horn enclosures, but I'd have to make some stands, and move my desk for space. I'll probably wait a little longer and get the dsp for either route. i slapped together zaph's hivi b3n (or is it b3s) design for my computer speaker. but i dont need very much output at all. I prefer headphones for gaming, etc. if they are computer speakers, is there not a way to do the process actively on the pc, rather then purchase a minidsp?

you should be very happy with the results after deadening is done. take your time with it. maybe start a build log? i'd love to see it!
