Picking the right sub for this setup?

given the type of music your friend will be listening to i dont think he will be satified with 2 8s sealed. its very simple to build a ported box. you dont need to design the box, we can help you with that. did you already buy the amp? really you dont have the budget to get picky with brands and shit.

What about a single sa 10 or 12, either down or up firing, with an external pvc port?

Pouring smoke under boost means he's not doing it right. Smoke does not mean power. i think it just has something to do with how the mod works.. once the boost builds up enough it stops smoking. in a very nonscientific test we measured a 0-60mph time of ~10sec, my friend said it was closer to 13-14 before. the mod consist of bridging a potentiometer across 2 pins on the fuel harness. here's something from a tdi forum "...what is happening is that the 10-pin connector (joining the main wire from the ECU to the Injection Pump) is being hot-wired into producing a different voltage, which alters or magnifies the ECU's signal in a similar manner that a Tuning Box does. This increases the amount of fuel the injection pump pushes and advances the timing..." You probably trick the engine into thinking it gets more air that it actually getting. Stupid mod and no way it will shave 3-4 sec off the 0-60 time. It will overfuel whenever he's off-boost. Hello high EGTs. Retune, bigger injectors nozzles, bigger intercooler (stock one is a joke) and bigger exhaust for starters. Now that's how you would go about modding a TDI, not with a resistor. What he said. Not to mention black smoke (aka soot) is toxic to the lungs and the environment. but it smells delicious You enjoy the smell of diesel fuel? actually i love the smell of gasoline but not diesel fuel or smoke for that matter. i love helping friends work on stupid little projects, mainly because it not my shit getting broke and not me spending money haha.

Retune, bigger injectors nozzles, bigger intercooler (stock one is a joke) and bigger exhaust for starters. Now that's how you would go about modding a TDI, not with a resistor. i think my friend got his numbers confused. it seems most sites are saying stock 0-60 is closer to 11-12 sec, so a 1 sec gain isn't phenomenal. we ran the resistor into the cabin so its adjustable/defeatable i dont disagree with you, seems like its a popular mod on tdi forums. if like most forum, its over hyped.. i think he might do some legit mods later on. i think he's planning to do the intercooler and exhaust soon. he picked the beetle up for ~1500 so its pretty much just something to beat on. originally it had some body damage that he fixed up. also, there was a problem with the turbo, over boost error or something like that, that we managed to fix (i think it turned out to be a bad MAF).
  9. how much space do you have available? according to the website the 15 need 3-5 cubic feet each, and the 18 5-8 cu.ft., not including port displacement. give us your max dimensions.
  10. Will I be able to properly power the sub with just 2400W? and if that is enough power, I am looking for it to be a daily driver so what options should I put on it? I am kinda leaning towards either the BTL or Mayhem but I dont know if my amp can power them properly. There is no such thing as under powering a speaker. "2400w" is plenty for a btl or mayhem. Hey, man thanks for the info! I gotta get my info straight lol but will both of those speakers perform about the same on 2400W considering the power handling is higher on the BTL? Ive always thought that I was supposed to have an amp putting out around the power handling value. its a marketing scam bro, 2400w will be plenty. let me ask this just to make it clear, do your subs or speakers sound bad when you turn the volume down? obviously not!

I'm looking for a decent car audio setup.

nice amp .. decent for the money... reputable dealer... $20 off coupon code = 3A825 you add it on after you enter your CC info IB would not be a good suggestion for the OP, clearly he is not interested in building a box. so i very much doubt he's up for the task of walling off his trunk, etc. i know nothing about the amp but it seems like a decent deal, considering your budget (if you wont be buying used). if your buying that box for the single 12" then we need to establish its' dimensions to see which subs could be used in it. i suspect most of the subs mentioned could work.

What iPod do you have? If you get a new one how much storage do you need? 4th gen, 20GB. It's more than enough storage but horrible reliability. I could do well with 4GB of storage, as long as it will play without hiccups. The HDD ones are prone to failure. Especially one that old. I had a 5th gen and the logic board went out so I sold it for parts and got a 160GB. If all you need is 4GB I'd just get a flash based nano. I had an iPod touch and it didn't play nicely with my Alpine or Pio HU. my 1st gen touch works great with my clarion hu, guess it hit or miss. i actually use a thumbdrive thru the usb instead of the ipod ussually.

Both of those reasons are subjective. Please don't use subjective reasons to convince the OP to use something or another. i don't think they are at all. the sa 8 is not a beast? you tell me another company that takes care of there customers like sundown. nearly every company on this site...

oh shit forgot you need to buy an enclosure.. well if you could make your own or have someone make it for you then my suggestion could work, budget wise.

I'm looking for a decent car audio setup.

if you feel comfortable with buying used gear then i suggest you dont buy the sub or amp new. with your budget you could get something like a FI BL, ~1500rms amp, and have money left over for deadening, for example. here is a suggestion on amp, sundown 1200 refurb from db-r -btw, i dont think you will have a problem running this amount of power on stock electrical, just do the big 3 and run 0 gauge wire. visit the deadening section and/or visit sounddeadenershowdown.com for some deadening advise.

    How to wire my amp

probably for competition, you wont hear a difference.
  20. the < 3ft rule is mostly bullshit. just find a think piece of metal, sand it down, and bolt your ground to it. rear seat mount might work. if you want to check shit with the dmm, set it to ohms, one probe will be connected to the front battery (use a long piece of wire) and take the other probe and touch points test them (you would have to sand down each location you want to check obviously). but really if you bolt the ground to thick piece of metal, that has a solid connection to the frame, then there's nothing to worry about.

    Best Install Options

if your running active, mid and tweeter in the A pillar would be great. if passive then keep them all together. then again, i'd sell them and run some larger midbass like sean suggested
  22. something like a pair of fi bl's with options, or btl's. \ could save some cash on wire and get welding wire, weldingsupply.com

    3way active help

i was stretching a low budget when i bought my speakers but here is what i have experience with. also check out zaphaudio.com for info of mid and tweets. i used a dayton nd20 (linked above) with my tangband w4 4", it fills in the very top end pretty nicely. m5 recommended, Aurasound NT1-204-8D 3/4" Titanium Dome Tweeter, as a metal dome alternative to the nd20. i use to run peerless 8309873" fullrange, in a 2way. used fountek fr88ex in my bro's installed this summer.. not sure if im ready to decide which i liked more between these and the peerless. i've seen people use aurans3's w/ a tweeter in afew builds. definitively a cheaper option. (in black) that might give you some idea's, let us know what you think. m5 might have some better options, just wanted to bump your thread up a bit
