Im planning buy a new pair of can this year, probably some hd600s. haven't decided on the amp yet. maybe build a bottlehead crack. Love the HD600s. I absolutely suggest them if you are not looking for planars. Lots of tube options for cans now. If you want to DIY, the Crack with Speedball is about as good as it gets. If you want point to point (no boards) high end, beautiful classic tube look, Look into the Woo Audio amps. The WA3 is an OTL design that is said to be the perfect match to the HD600s. The OTL is only a high impedance driver topology. For something you can use on high and low load cans, the WA6 fits the bill. Of course, it is easy to drop $200 on a damn fine Chinese tube amp (seriously, they are really building some really kick ass tubes) that only require about a $75 tube upgrade to sound top notch. I have been spending a ton of time researching analog, and tubes have always been an obsession of mine. The fact that the Chinese are doing a killer job with their tubes may seem odd, but they really have cornered the market. Companies like Yaqin are dropping amps that are really getting great reviews. No, they are not MacIntosh, but they are 10% of the cost for twice the power. Tube upgrades (the Chinese tubes pretty much suck) make them really decent units. Thanks for the suggestions, I really enjoy building my own so a kit like the bottlehead crack is more up my alley.

Depends on what you want to prove. I'd do FLAC, 320, 192, 128 and call it a day. I skip the 256 only because he won't hear a difference at 192. After down converting them, re-upconvert them so that they all are the same size on the disk and in the same format. Keep a key and then let him tell you what they are. As for songs, tease him. Use songs that HE knows. Put some songs together for him this weekend but the files, after converting back to flac were not the same size. Sorry, have to convert to WAV I think for that. FLAC is too smart. oh ok

It's worth it. I shipped mine from NY to AZ and it was 30 each. Money well spent. J He doesn't have shipping materials to get to me. So he ordered a new sub. Ill grab the broke one off him and probably recone it later. Not sure what he went with. We broke it down to either and Icon, Xcon, or Fi Q.

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

I want to put together a little blind bitrate comparison for a coworker. Any tips on how many selections I should put together? I was thinking about doing Wav, 256, 192, 128. Any suggestions for songs?

Thanks sean, I'll steer him towards the xcon hopefully. wish I had a spare recone for my mj18.. If anyone see one around the interwebs let me know

    Welcome to the IHoP v.2

I should point out that all the subs are modeled in the same enclosure (2.5ft3 @ 30hz) which was build for the Icon. I comparing potential replacements. If he is melting voice coils than I like to recommend something with a bit more thermal power handling like an xcon, fi bl w/ options, fi ssd w/ options, etc.

The bl 12 looks out of scale compared to the other, and I'm curious as to why. It looks as it should in the SPL graph.

I can't figure out what you mean by jacked up, lol If nothing looks out of place than I guess I dont understand what this graph is telling me.
