Been out if the game for 12 years a few questions about Q
KU40 replied to Stevis's topic in Fi Products
My recommendation would be to not sell those Orion amps. Those are old school sweet. Well maybe you could sell the 250 since you can't use them both for the new subs. The 275 is rated for, what, 1200 watts at 1 ohm? But it'll actually do closer to 1600-1800 if you have the electrical to back it up. It would power two Fi SSDs or Qs nicely. As for sealed vs. ported, that's up to your preferences. Did you like the sealed W6s? -
amp goes into prot mode if i turn?
KU40 replied to burton907's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
x2. Check connections on the amp as well as the speaker wire to the sub. Maybe when you turn it's causing two wires on the speaker leads to short since it slides around so much. -
I got one

Going out of town tomorrow for 2-3 days for work in the 25* weather all day. Hopefully I don't freeze to death. You boys behave.

We need a further explaination and copies of said pix. Well the pictures are on my phone and I don't have a data plan so it'll cost me like 5 bucks to email them to my computer. It was like 10 degrees that day the coworker brought them because it had just snowed the night before and she wanted to bring her husband's truck since it has 4wd. We were hoping its legs would be really frozen so that it could stand up, and they were, but bent in so that it wouldn't stand. So one picture is of it laying down in the parking lot, another leaning against her truck standing up, and one leaning against a tree. One lady walked by and stopped and just stared kinda wide-eyed. It was hilarious though. We just thought of the idea while in a training session that day. it was pretty boring and she was drawing the truck w. the coyotes in the back in her notebook. The drawing looked funny, and we thought taking pictures would be funny too.

Yep. Port is waaaaay too small. And what is the 50 hz thing on the head unit? A crossover or a boost? If it's not a crossover, that's a problem. A sub NEEDS a crossover. If it's just a bass boost and you're using it, that's also bad.

If it doesn't matter if we're wrong, then why even ask the question? Apparently nobody here has tested both subs. That's the only way you'll find out in a swap test. So let it go. But I guess my opinion is the BTL, because I like its terminals better than the 9500's wire leads.
-
If he keeps that attitude I'm not too hopeful. Develop a better one and we'll get along.

Check for air leaks on the box and from around the sub's mounting flange.

Well, where did he shoot it? In her mouth for a hole in one. YES. Speaking of, the gf didn't believe me that I read that eating pineapple makes semen taste better. I told her that I'd be willing to eat 3 pineapples a day for scientific purposes. She agreed to test it out

If there are no notes in a song below 32 hz, how could it be wasting amplifier power? It wouldn't be playing anything below 32 hz then anyways.

Amplifier Fuse Pop
KU40 replied to Lucky 76's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Did you install the power wire with the inline fuse under the hood still in place? Did you ever touch a live power wire to the heat sink of the amp (on accident)? -
The gf is making me fettuccine alfredo tonight. The first of seven she owes me for taking pictures of a dead coyote in various positions in a parking lot at work. She made pot roast, potatoes, and carrots in the crock pot on Friday night for us. It was very good. Then Saturday morning we made biscuits and sausage gravy, also wonderfully good. This morning I made us chocolate chip pancakes. I'm digging this good eating

Aaron I'm sending the money today. You'll know it's mine because I addressed the envelope upside down. Haha

Two Icons. More information about your listening goals instead of those absurdly general ones would help. But it doesn't matter, I'd still suggest two icons.

Remote Gain Controls and Such??? Do you use'em or no
KU40 replied to smullen's topic in Sundown Audio
It doesn't make any sense to use remote gains with an amp hooked up to interior speakers. That's what the head unit volume is for. You really only need a remote gain for subs in order to adjust the level of the subs relative to the interior speakers so that you can turn the sub down without turning the interior speakers down, for instance. But nowadays many head units already have a level adjustment for the subwoofer RCA outputs, so you can adjust the sub level with the head unit. -
I just said coaxial for the back because most of the time rear speakers are 6x9's. Which are oval cones. But coaxials can come in round cones as well (5.25", 6.5", etc.). Also, a 12" sub can play below 20 hz. Depending on the sub and enclosure it can be very pronounced in fact. Size of speaker does not always dictate frequency range, especially in subs. As for where to set the subsonic filter, that is dependent on the enclosure. If you have a ported box you want to set the subsonic a few hz below the tuning frequency. You don't need a subsonic with a sealed box.
-
Car audio is usually filled with compromises. So you'll have to make some.
-
Larger enclosure will play lower, have a flatter response overall, and be more efficient. But it can sound a bit less accurate and more boomy. If you aren't sure what to do, make a 4 cube box.

Einstein said it mang! Glad to see you put so much away. Me and the W had a LONG talk about our retirement. We both put in between 10-15%. I'm going to open up a trading account soon and scuttle some post tax money into that to help defer down the road costs. I'm just going to stop eating cafeteria food and bring in my own. We also get a FAT pension here. I refuse to look else where unless they can top my salery and come up with the difference in compensation for the pension/matching plan. At least not untill I'm vested. I'm going to give you the BEST advice I have ever heard about money though KU. Chew it, digest it, then rechew it like a cow. Retirement and finances is like a stool you sit on. It cannot work without 3 legs. It NEEDS 4 legs to be truely stable. Extra legs help to brace it. #1 Retirement savings #2 Own your own home #3 used to be SS... who knows now. The rest is something you have to decide on. I definitely agree. This plan is my retirement savings, #1. #2- I definitely plan on owning my own home. I will NOT get into a situation like my mom who rented her house for 20 years and just a month ago bought it and started making mortgage payments. #3- I think if social security can survive the next 20 years (perhaps a big IF) from the glut of baby boomers retiring, it will be much more stable once I get there. But I understand it may not be. #4- My work has a retirement savings system where I contribute 4% and the employer matches. #5- Perhaps if i get the farm, that's more actual income during retirement. I'm definitely hoping to have a funky looking, octopus-looking but ultimately supremely stable stool . And I'm hoping I find a wife with the same savings/future goals. It's really hard to save for retirement with a shopaholic . And of course all of this is banking on no huge windfall of bad luck, like a sickness that insurance won't cover or whatever.

Hate to tell you, but $1M in 41 years is only worth about $250-300k which isn't enough to live on IMO. Well of course you are correct. But stop crushing my dream!
-
Maybe I'll take over the farm once I become my millionaire. . I'm sure I'll have to fight my dad for it, though. I know he's looking forward to the planting twice a year, harvest twice a year, and 8 months of down time between it all

I figured that if i live simply (which is how I like to live anyway, not too materialistic) and save 10k a year until I'm 30 (6 years including this one), even if I don't save a dime after that and can earn 8% interest until I'm 65, I'll be a millionaire. And that's just 8%. If the stock market gets back to average and I can earn 12%, I'll be a millionaire by the time I'm 52. If I can save 5k per year after I'm 30 and get 8% return, millionaire at 57. 5k/yr with 12%, 49 years old. That is my goal. It was a lot easier when I had a roommate though, bills were only half they are now. But I figure once I get married that'll happen again. They key is saving early. Compound interest ftw. But I'm sure you smarties know that Granted it would be easier if I made more than 42k a year. But I still make it happen now. And no, I don't really care that I tell you how much I make. It's fine if you don't, I'm not trying to get into that. Just offering it for reference to my savings goals. I'm pretty content where I'm at. I make more than 3 of my 4 parents. Not that I'm bragging or putting them down, but just saying I consider myself a success if I'm already doing that. Just too bad I work for the state and so we aren't getting raises or bonuses this year. Or really for the foreseeable future, probably at least 1-2 more years
