It is extremely frustrating that this is true and hopefully we can get it righted, but it will take an effort from all of the moderators and not just a few. Quoted for truth. I admit I'm not the greatest at being a stickler yet, but I'm trying.... I agree that I don't like those types of threads though, very annoying.

Yeah. In a smaller type enclosure, like 2 cubes, it will raise the tune about 1 hert after the sub is put in. On a 4 cube enclosure it'll raise it about .5 hz. So as you increase box size it matters less.
-
How much power is going to it? Does it pop on low volumes as well as loud or only when you crank it? What tones make the sub make the noise? What box is it in? And what do you mean by wire it back down to 4 ohms when you say you have a dual 4 ohm sub? You gave us basically no information to help you.
-
I'd just subtract a bit off of the width you enter to subtract the volume for sub displacement. So if you had a box with dimensions 20"w x 20"d x 15" tall, enter 18.8" for the width instead of 20, that would take out about .17 cubes for sub displacement. However, if you are using the RE calculator for wood cutting dimensions, you'll want to go back in and change the width back to 20" after you get the port calculated, that way the dimensions are correct for how you actually want to build the box.

I think the maximum the amp can send when fully clipped is two times RMS for brief periods but when playing a whole song or something, the amp can't keep that amount of power up for the extended period so it may average out to be about 1.5 times RMS.
-
I don't think you're thinking in the terms of all possibilities with clipping. If you have a 500 watt RMS amp on a 1000 watt RMS sub, you can clip the hell out of the amp and it'll only send a maximum of 1000 watts, which the speaker can handle and won't blow. But if you do like most people and match the RMS of the amp with the sub, now you have a 1000 watt amp on a 1000 watt sub. If you clip that amp even a tad you'll be getting more power than the sub is rated for. Full clipping could get 2,000 watts from it. That=failure.
-
speakers don't have to get their RMS rating.

you could get a couple of the SI BMs when they come out.

do you know how you're going to attach it together now after you cut it?

Personally I would say its better to be safe then to be sorry. I would just get the 2 12s but other might say differently. You also have to get another box as well and its a hassle to do all that measuring and deciding which box to get. I don't disagree, but if the volume knob is handled properly that single sub will survive on that amp forever. Conversely, bad volume control could even blow two of the subs on that amp. So you're not gaining a foolproof setup just by switching to two subs.
-
There should be the same current draw between the two. One 3000 watt amp will draw the same power as two 1500 watt amps if efficiencies are the same. I don't know how you have more wiring options with two amps rather than one though? They'll still put out the same power either way unless you need a different impedance load, e.g.- one dual 2 sub to one 3000d or two dual 2 subs to one 1500d each.
-
Also try taking the sub out and looking under the cone where the former is glued to it and see if there's a gap in glue.

Have you actually metered both setups? I switched from four 12's sealed to one 15 ported at 30 hz with the same amp and lost about 2-3 db peak but the ported 15" seemed more obnoxious because the lowend (30-40 hz) was louder. The 12's would peak at about 55 hz but the 15" at about 45 hz.

I agree on the bandsaw. I would also think that a fine-toothed blade would work best?

6,000 watts RMS AudioPipe Amps
KU40 replied to Ben Building's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
I guess it really is a steal then. -
Well it all depends on what the score was, if it was like 164 and went to 164.8, I'm sure you'd here some difference. Nope. And btw it would be easier to hear the difference between 100.0 and 100.8 but you still can't Yeah I was going to say that lower volumes would be easier if it were possible because at 164 your ears are so overloaded that they probably couldn't even tell a 5 db difference.

New setup

You can never have too much available power. You don't have to actually use all of the power that the amp is capable of. -

Yeah, a little too much of a steal. -
If you do put an enclosure in the backseat just remember to strap it to something. You don't want that thing flying around in case of an accident or you hitting the brakes hard or something.

what size is recomended a 15 or 18 Fi btl for my project?
KU40 replied to foxvega87's topic in Fi Products
Go measure the space you want to use. Then we can give you suggestions. -
oh now I remember. I ate a PB & J for lunch and my burps still taste like peanut butter. Isn't everybody glad I remembered?
-
I came back to my computer to type something up here, but now that I'm here I've forgotten.
-
holy schnikes you basically lit that thing on fire! You were definitely overpowering it.

Their online menu says they do. *The last time I was there I would have been too poor to get it so I'm sure I glanced over it without a second thought* Then you can get ice cream at Sylas & Maddy's downtown. mmm great.

I had the itch to blow through LC's on my way up on Thursday and had planned on hitting Wheatfields for breakfast...but am open. Didn't realize you were in Lawrence. Free State Brewery is pretty good, and they brew their own beer. I've never tried it though. Genovese has interesting stuff. It's mainly italian, but you can get octopus and all kinds of weird stuff there. LaParilla is good for latin american. All of these places are downtown on Massachusetts Street. There's also Kobe japanese steakhouse & sushi, where I believe they do that whole make the food in front of you with a chef per table deal. I've never had wheatfields for breakfast (Miltons is where it's at for breakfast), but I'm not a huge fan of their lunch and supper stuff, mainly because they put a lot of different stuff together and I guess I'm more of a traditional guy. I can see how it's good to a lot of people, but I'm not one that wants cranberry relish on my turkey sandwich, etc.
