What all do I need for a amp setup?

Is that the only amp you're running? -
What voltage to set gain to?
KU40 replied to Stu55's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Well I don't disagree with that. I just don't think it's practical due to the wide range of music out there. But a tip for this method is to open your trunk with the sub playing as loud as you think it is safe to go, and take about 10 steps backward. Distortion is a lot easier to hear farther away from the sub when your ears aren't overloaded. You can also have somebody else slowly turn the volume up inside while you're back there so you can more easily tell when the sub stops being louder and the musical reproduction from the sub changes. -
Is that box depth internal or external? If external, it won't work. The sub will be too deep to fit in the box. If internal it should be ok. A bit more space may be ideal, but 1" should be sufficient for the vented pole.

"bitchy wife FTL" haha. My gf gets that way too. "Oh no, I'm sweating, I don't like to sweat!" Even when she "works out" she tries not to sweat. come on...... Though she does have a bit of asthma so that kinda keeps her from going too hard and sweating a lot anyways. seems like we are on the same page with our g/fs just suck it up Yeah for real. Stop being such a princess. My run got cut short after 1.75 miles due to sideache. I haven't had one of those in a long time. Dammit. I tried to walk it off and jog a few more times over the remaining 1/2 mile, but they were shut down too.

Off to work the muscles that atrophied by 50% while I just sat in my chair today.

Today was the most boring day at work ever. I had like three things to do.
-
I'm about to do that myself.

The voltage of the vehicle has NOTHING to do with the amplifier gain. They have nothing to do with each other, so it is not only impossible but makes zero sense to set the amplifier gain correctly using it. The voltage you measure is from the outputs of the amplifier. As in the things you hook the speaker up to. If you'd like to read how this works, there have been various threads on that topic already. Use the search feature to find them. You'll have to wire the voice coils of your sub in series on the JL.

I guess I'm just too used to my 1/0 now, ha.

I was thinking about adding my input until you said that. Now, nope.
-
What kind of sound are you looking for? Do you have a preference on tweeter material? How deep can the mids be?
-
yea i'm a little nervous :/ whats the best way to set the gain?..the guy i talked to said he sets the gains by the voltage..but i don't have any voltage problems from a 250/1 so i'm thinking hes going to say crank the gain all the way up but then i know it will start clipping. isn't an ollioscope the best way? If I'm understanding you right, you have the voltage thing misconstrued. He doesn't mean set the gain by voltage of the vehicle (from the battery), like when it starts to dip your gain is right. He means measure the output voltage on the amplifier's speaker terminals, then use a formula to determine how much power it is putting out. That way you can tell when it's putting out 250 watts. I'd be a lot more worried about blowing the amp due to overdriving it than the sub.
-
What size is your power wire? It looks too small.

Stupid sore throat woke me up a lot last night.

How in the world did you get that gem for that price (looks like an '00?)? Definitely nice work. Why did the previous owner(s) never drive it? I have a black '98 XLT with the SOHC V6. 178k, haha. But he looks and runs basically like new.

That's what I'd do.

Don't worry, I can tell the difference between clean bass and distorted bass, especially with the Mag. I haven't blown a subwoofer in 10 years even with amps rated up to twice the sub's RMS. -
I live on the second story of my townhouse and the neighbors were behind the place making noise last night at about 9:00. I kinda wanted some peace and quiet and I almost yelled down "Go away, 'batin!"
-
Speakers on the window sill, hehe. You may want to separate them so that you get the stereo effect.
-
Well that's a tough one. I've never heard either driver, so hopefully somebody who has can give their input. However, the Shiva-X uses the XBL^2 motor, which is a very low distortion motor. My Mag v.4 employs it and it sounds very clean. However, the IXL may be able to go lower a little easier. Not sure how much you'd notice though. I think you'll be happy with either.

It depends on your box. They may take 2500 watts thermally, but depending on the box that may rip apart the soft parts or bottom the voice coil due to overexcursion.

I'd just set it with my eyes and ears and be done. There will be so much variability in songs you'll listen to that, IMO, it's impractical to think that one static setting will work, especially when setting with a test tone. Granted this is where a remote bass knob or sub volume on the HU comes in handy, but I found that I had to turn my gain up farther due to the almost nonexistant bass in some old rock songs that I wanted to hear. I'd set my gain with rap songs, but when I plugged in Def Leppard the bass drum wouldn't be proficient enough even with the sub level maxed out. So I have to know that the sub may reach limits with only +12 out of +15 on my sub level on rap songs.
