Gain question. Please help!
KU40 replied to AndrewBR98's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Something like those could work as low tech solutions. But I wouldn't get the value of bass blocker cap that you linked to, as that's a 200 hz crossover. You'll be missing out on all of your midbass with that, even with it only being a shallow -6db slope. The Fmods only work if you have an amplifier hooked up to the speakers, as they go inline with the RCAs. Do you have an amplifier on the front speakers? If not, those won't work. If so, why don't you use the highpass filter on the amp for the speakers? As for the crossover on the sub amp, turn it up to 80 hz. If it is set at 50 hz, you're losing output at 50 hz because the crossover point is actually the point that is already -3db, not the point at which the crossover begins to slope off. So raise it to 80 hz for the test. Or hell, just turn it off. Since you're just going to be running a 50 hz tone to set up the gain, you don't even need the crossover on while you do that. -

I'm not really sure of half of what you just said. I remember Avionixx being highly pushed a few years ago. But IIRC, they had an issue with one of their amps having problems that they had to fix a lot. I'm not 100% sure my memory is correct though. The Concept subs used to be ok, their amplifiers had a pretty decent following, especially since I think they were one of the first with a 2,000+ watt amp (I think their 2400D).

Gain question. Please help!
KU40 replied to AndrewBR98's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
No, it won't hurt anything. The gain isn't like the volume knob on your head unit which will start to distort after a certain point. Sounds like you need some highpass crossovers on your front speakers. Where exactly are the settings for your lowpass filter? Also make sure the switch is actually on lowpass and not highpass for the filter. -
Oldie but goodie: <param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385">dammit I suck at embedding.

Story you guys might appreciate, speaking of guns: On the radio the other day I heard a news story about a woman in..... Pennsylvania? I think, who walked into her apartment and two thugs followed her right in. One of them took her purse and the other one took her to the couch and held her down. The one with the purse just paced back and forth, asking the lady for her money. She didn't really have any, but they weren't buying it. Then the guy with the purse said ok, take her clothes off (as if they were going to rape her). At this point she got really freaked out about that possibility, so she said ok, give me my purse and I'll give you the money. Why the guy holding the purse didn't look in there already is beyond anybody's guess, I mean isn't that where people put their money? Anyways, it's a huge lucky thing that he didn't, because what they didn't know was that she had a concealed carry license and had a handgun in her purse. If the guy had looked in, he would have saw it and she may have been in real trouble. So the guy put the purse on the floor and the guy on the couch let her go and she crawled to it. She stuck her hand inside and before she even pulled her hand out she fired a shot through the bag and hit the standing guy, then pulled the gun out and shot the guy on the couch. One of the guys died, the other went to the hospital and I think was in serious condition. Score a huge one for that lady.

I had a pair of those subs years ago, They were pretty nice. Beat on them all day with a 1000 watt amp even though they were only rated 250 apiece.

No such thing as fresh crab unless you are a fisherman. It starts to deteriorate REALLY, REALLY fast so it is always cooked and frozen asap. The best in fact is cooked and frozen on the boat. Bristol Bay FTMFW!! Either way, you should NEVER eat at a Red Lobster, fucking terrible. , I don't mind it. And being in Kansas, where would I ever get anything fresh anyways? I can't just take trips to the coasts every month to get fresh stuff, nor will I go without. I have to make due with what I have. Plus this type of thing is all I've ever eaten, so I don't know any different. I buy seafood at the store obviously, but it's also obviously not fresh. And I had a gift card.

Other than being horribly stupid for buying a new car, no big deal. Sure the 4 Runner is fine. He told me their price on it was like 33k, which I guess was only 500 over invoice, but I was like jeez that's still a lot. I'm not really sure why they wanted to buy new. He's never bought any new car in his life, so maybe that's why? I think she got hers new. I guess they'll find out how it goes.

90% of the time that is not the case. Normally the one and only thing that changes is cone area, motor, coil, softparts, they are all the same so power handling is not effected. Right. Most models of subs use everything the same for each size of sub except for basket size and cone size. In this case the power handling among different sizes would be exactly the same. However, the slightly larger moving mass from the increased cone size can slightly shift several parameters. Is it enough to be heard, maybe. Sometimes a 15" in this scenario has an fs 3-5 hz below the 12", which may be discernible. Having boxes at the same tuning might actually make the difference more audible due to the difference in frequency response. If you want to compare the different sized subs in similar boxes, you actually need to equalize the Qtc and the f3 point of the boxes. That may mean you have to tune the 12" to 29 or 32 hz, or whatever. Some models of subs actually use different motors, or at least coils, in their different subs. I know I've seen lines where the 10" and 12" use a 2" coil, whereas the 15" uses a 2.5" coil. I think MTX used to do that. Alpine might also have. In that case, nearly all bets are off depending on how closely the manufacturer wanted to make the specs. The 15" could be such a different animal that it could actually belong in its own model line and not grouped with the 10 and 12 inch versions. Or they could make it so that the 15" has very close specs to the other sizes by machining the motor a little differently.

just pray they didn't get the 4 cylinder I think he was saying V6

I'd just test it out either way. You won't hurt the speaker by hooking the phase up backwards. In some scenarios it's actually beneficial to hook up one speaker out of phase. At any rate, it will be easy to distinguish when they're not in correct phase, because when you hook them up, change the balance from center to one side. If the bass increases when you shift to only one speaker, it's because the speakers are out of phase and you should switch the wires of one. If the bass is best with the balance at 0, they're in correct phase.

I would go back there and ask to see the crossovers and see if they have a selectable switch like 98GMC said. Most good components do have this feature, and you could have the salesperson switch the tweeter setting to attenuate the signal and retest the songs.
-
So the question then becomes- Did the one sub bottom out sooner than it would have normally or was the one farthest away just protected from bottoming out as early by something? Or I guess a third option, did you switch the subs around in each hole to make sure it wasn't just a variance in the two subs?

Speaking of newer cars, my brother and his wife are very close to buying a 2010 Toyota 4Runner. He told me they did last night, but then today he said it was just a credit check thing that they signed last night. Anybody know anything about these? I'm not super excited about it, but she has a Scion TC now so apparently she's into those types of things.

Went to check under the hood of the gf's Chevy Equinox today since she's leaving on a bit of a roadtrip tomorrow, and it was the weirdest under-the-hood experience of my life. There was no tranny fluid dipstick, no radiator cap (couldn't even get to the radiator anyways because it was stuffed up next to the grill and had metal covering the whole thing from the top), had to pop the air intake tube off of the manifold to get to the air filter, and the battery was nowhere in sight. I assumed it was inside this one plastic box but I didn't feel like digging in there to see. Man I sure hope all newer cars aren't like this these days. That was ridiculous. It's like they're making you take it into the dealership to do anything on it.

WTF, I see the Red Lobster crabfest commercials on TV so I'm intrigued to go there. The gf and I drive 40 minutes to get to the nearest one and the menu and pricing is exactly the same. There are no additional dishes to accentuate crabfest. It's just marketing crap, probably to get rid of remaining fresh crab after the season is over or something (I'm not really sure when crab season actually is). What a crock. In addition, they were out of ALL fish. No salmon, tilapia, flounder, or any fresh fish of the day. So basically we go to choose from shrimp (which my gf doesn't like), lobster, or crab. We each get crab, she gets the king and I get snow and we split half and half. Now of course it was delicious and we went there for crab anyways, but I like their stuffed flounder and would have gotten that as well. And I thought there would actually be something special about crabfest. So we were a bit deliciously disappointed.

So, about setting amplifier gains...
KU40 replied to tripslipfall's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
I set by ear, don't have to worry about that. But yes, 0db tones are a quite conservative way to set gains. -
Ran a little over 2 miles yesterday. It was hot, like 95*, but I felt surprisingly good, though. The run through the sprinklers going over the sidewalk helped a little.

The one that an insurance broker you trust suggests. NEVER work with an agent for a single company, in particular at your age. It is the equivalent of throwing money down the drain. ya i was looking into Assurant, because it was supposedly a good deal, im covering 20k of personal property and it works out to be $426 a year. I dunno im still looking. My parents are still picking up the car insurance trying to make them keep that as long as possible even though my car only has liability on it. My parents have state farm FWIW. Your parents are getting raped....they should change to a broker. Really. WAY better coverage and less money. $426 is absurd for renters, it should nearly be free with car insurance. Your car and renters shouldn't be 2x that a year. I just got renters insurance with Progressive since I have my car insurance with them. I think my renters insurance was 264 for the year, for 15k in personal property coverage (plus a few extras like replacement cost which was 45 extra itself). Car insurance is something like 460 a year with them, though it is 12 years old. So ~620 a year for all insurance isn't bad I suppose. I think I'll be getting a bit of a refund on my car insurance as well now that I have renters with them also.

sundown saz 1000 settings
KU40 replied to woofy's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Set the subsonic 2-3 hz below the tuning of your box, if it is ported. If it's a sealed box, you don't need the subsonic on. I initially set the lowpass around 70 hz, then go up or down depending on how the sub sounds at that level as well as how it blends with the front speakers. If the fronts can play lower, it's beneficial to lower the lowpass on the sub. Phase at 0, but can turn that anywhere to match the phase with the front speakers. You cannot hurt the sub by moving this dial. Leave bass boost at 0. You don't need it, and it will only harm things if used. -
Definitely not. That would be about .5 decibel on the meter.
