The enclosure is built now. The final piece is gluing....it's 5.5 sealed. I'll take some more pictures of it tonight/tomorrow. The laminate is coming Monday or Tuesday. It's an medium oak grain.

Alright, I just ordered a Dayton Reference 15" HF subwoofer for my HT. I am going to use this 90% for movies. I just need some help with an enclosure. If someone could give me a rough size I should build it and a tuning frequency that would be prime. If you're feeling ambitious you can even hook me up with a design. Thanks for anything you contribute!

Well I know what amps I'm not buying now...haha

I'm actually buying a red supercoupe next week! It's a '93 auto, but it's been garage kept its whole life and never seen a winter. I'm pretty excited for it.

I didn't think about it when I ordered my other stuff, so I went to lowe's last night. They didn't have anything there, but I did find some tablesaw standoffs in my basement. Upon further consideration I may pick up some locking casters. If my dad ever needs to move the box there is no way in hell he will be able to do it by himself. Any other ideas, let 'em fly!

Alright, so I started my box build yesterday with a buddy of mine. It's 5.5 ft^3 roughly. It's sealed with a downfire mounted subwoofer. The subwoofer, as stated in the description, is a Dayton Reference HF 15" and will be powered by a Bash 500w plate amp. (4ohm) DAY 1 It was about 90 degrees yesterday with 94% humidity. Needless to say, we were a little warm. Just some scrap that we used from my first box build. Just mocked it up. DAY 2 Just had a little bit of time to work on it today. Here's a pic of the amp. And here is the only piece of wood I actually cut tonight. This is obviously the back plate. I plan on using an oak Formica to match my living rooms woodwork.

Just ordered the alt =)

Are you the person with the T-bird? I may be mistaken, but I thought it was you. -
If you have the basic tools, it's not hard to build a box. Just go around and look at some build logs and you'll pick up a lot from those. You can build your own box for under $75 I'd say. (or close) If you don't build your own box, you're going to pay. Unless you have a friend that can help you out.

Okay, I just had a few minutes and here is what I accomplished. Just a few shots of the sub, and another of the amp.
-
I got the holes cut out on the bottom baffle for the subwoofer. I finished that yesterday, so all my pieces are cut. I will glue a couple pieces together tonight and get some more pictures up.

Sweet build man! That thing is going to be insanely loud.

Eh, you could leave your alt stock. That might put quite a bit of stress on it. If you want to drop the money on the BTL, might as well save up a bit and upgrade your electrical too. -
I would start by checking the phase of the speakers, as stated. And if that isn't the problem I would build a smaller box. Even try a ported one....2.7 with one of those is pretty huge...haha

great guy, helped me out personally ALOT when i was starting my system.
-
This is mainly going to be used for movies, you think that would be an ideal box?

I've been really busy as of late and haven't had the time to start. I just checked this and noticed that johnecon said to go sealed. How big of an enclosure will I need if I go sealed? Also, I HAVE to bottom mount this sub. Will this have any effect on output? As soon as I figure my enclosure out, I will also do a build log.
-
haha, that's awesome...but some what annoying too i guess...lol
-
Also, my mom runs a daycare in my house....So I think a bottom mount would be best for my application. I don't need any sticky little fingers or flying toys hitting my sub...haha.

Okay, I think I've decided on going with a 15" Dayton Reference HF subwoofer for my home audio build. My question is: should I build a crossover for this? I'm not very experienced in this, but I'm willing to learn. Should I buy a prebuilt crossover from PE? Or would the crossover on the amp be enough? I'm new to this, so I'd appreciate ALL points of view. Thanks, Ryan Also, This will be used primarily for movies, with a little music here and there. Now, what should I tune this to? SHOULD I port it? And what type of port....slotted or aero?

I think I'm using a Dayton 500w plate amp.....But I seriously don't know what my options are....I'd like to keep it under 400-450 for the sub and amp. If you have a recommendation let me hear it!

I would definitely make sure you have a good ground. I had a problem that sounded kinda like that, and it turned out that it was my ground.

It sounds like a chopped version of D4L - Laffy Taffy

http://www.stemulite.com/ Has anyone had an opportunity to use this stuff yet? Seems kinda gimmicky to me. I believe it's by the same people who made Endothil-CR. The forums at bodybuilding.com seem to think it's gimmicky too. Just curious about anyone's thoughts on this stuff, or if anyone has had the opportunity to try it.
