So here is something interesting. The dog legged shape of some binoculars is due to the prism system called Porro. It's more simple to design and due to its design it doesn't need as much work to get a really great image. The straight style binoculars are one of a couple prism designs called roof prism. These allow for a little less weight, and size. Especially width. However the nature of that prism design seperates the light and then brings that split image back together. In other words it requires much more design and precision in the manufacturing process. It also has an extra level of light loss due to the mirror system used in most designs. On a few sites it notes that you should expect to have another 50% to 25% tacked to any given quality of optic to get same results in a roof design. So if you have any given price the porro dog legged wider style will be a bit heavier and wider, but would have superior quality to the straight roof style. Weather that is put into better glass for a better image or better build quality for durability would but up to the manufacturer.

Then maybe they are for you. I'm not 100% sure but I think those were the ones that mentioned they didn't work so well with glasses and didn't adjust for when not wearing them. They look good and rugged though. It's either because it truely has a good protective shell, or because its made to look like that and all the money went to form and no function. I've never touched them though.

Turkey hunters like shit like that.

I'm going to invest in a range finder or spotting scope instead of binoculars to save some cash I think. The scope I'm having built will have 3.8-22 magnification with a 58mm objective. It has an extremely wide FOV also which should help since the low power is still so relatively high. Shit man I saw binoculars with 35mm objectives..... That's the OD of my scope tube. Lol I just may want to range or spot without having to point my rifle at it.

And if the 8 power is not enough then you uave to move to 10.

I cannot open the link right now, but a bigger objective will only basically help gather more light and probably better pupil at the occular(eye side of the optic). This is only true assuming relatively similar glass and design quality. If one pair is 44mm of high end German precision ground glass seated with precision strong bonding glues and super low tolerance moving parts, it will kick ass on an optic that is 60mm objectives but low quality glass and production. What I'm saying is that you probably want the Nikon that was just a bit more. I read a few dozen mixed reviews and what's really amusing is most mentioned them not working well with glasses. On the ones I linked I couldn't find that as an issue. I also thought one retailer had them for 140, or the same as the trail blazers. The waterproof busheys were called heavy. That's because it was a bunch of liberal limp wristed bird watchers in leiterhosen and not a good meat eating Texas boy! Durability, weight, and optic awesomeness. Pick 2, or have a few grand extra to shave diminishing returns. It's the theil small of optics lol

R2, have you/can you ever turned metal rods?

Not the coleman though. I don't know what OEM they use to make them, but it's a bit like buying a Ford dirt bike. Good company, just stretching into a realm they have no knowledge in.

To me peng, chromatic abberation(usually a weird blue fuzz around objects from colamination issue I think( I'm just learning optics bear with me)) and when an object distorts as it approaches the edges of an image are the biggest issue I can have with an optic. It makes me dizzy even staying still sometimes. That is the reason I didn't buy the scope I set out to purchase. I tested a bunch of them and it bugged my eyes in 10 min of viewing. I couldn't imagine trying to focus for an hour and shoot.

I would take these out of those choices I think. I think durrability is worth more than amazing OMG sexy better than the naked eye glass, unless I have a specific reason for that. http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-8x42-Waterproof-Fogproof-Binocular/dp/B00009R6SC/ref=sr_1_289?ie=UTF8&qid=1321368523&sr=1-289 But I think these would be a really good option. It's simmilar to the other nikons you posted http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001HKIK4/ref=cm_cr_asin_lnk

I thought 200 yards was a bit much, good thing I rechecked. The shooting range we use is 100 yards max. with the .243 and the .44, 50 yards with the .22's. I was thinking along the lines of 8x40 or 10x50 My best advice with optics is buy once cry once. That doesn't mean that u need to spend a small fortune. Just buy the best you can. And I will really emphasize that the larger objective will help a lot in a few ways. 10 power is pretty common and will probably pick up holes at 100 yards if you buy a good pair.

If I need .1 Dee beez I'm just going to coordinate a might belch or fart when I burp the moofer

Nikon is good too Aaron. Definately in the mix for the mid price game especially considering company size/backing.

Meopta, minox, and if your willing to try a new ish company, vortex are good options. The bigger the objective lens you can deal with the better, and if your not going to be in wooded areas having a little extra magnification would be great. Objective diameter also allows for more exit pupil. That can translate into more forgiving eye relief perhaps. The picture will be bigger that's for sure. Paralax won't matter too much so as long as it focus's well you will be gravy. If you want to go big leica, Zeiss, Swarovski, and Cannon all make rockstar binos.
-
Got a max dollar amount you want to spend pengu? And I'm guessing you don't but to make sure its not for range finding correct?
-
That's a tall order pent. .22 is tough to see. I would start looking at binoculars with big objective lenses. As close to 50mm or bigger. I would also think it a good idea to get pretty high magnification to see holes in paper at that distance. My new scope will go up to 22x and I'm not sure but .22 might be pretty hard to see at 200 yards even with the mini Hubble I'm getting. Binoculars will be more forgiving though. Stay away from barska in general. Bushnell actually makes an ok pair. I have had a few. Most inherited but decent quality. Swarovski is pretty awesome but the name adds a big cost. I'll ask/look around but

Can you tell me what its for? I'm an optics junkie. Just general usage. Not concerned about having the best of the best of the best, just a quality built pair at a reasonable price. Only specific things I'm looking for are decent amount of eye relief for using with glasses, at least a 5 mm exit pupil so it can be used in all types of lighting, and fairly rugged design that will handle abuse. Nothing compact/pocket sized, either. Do how far out and what will you be looking at? As in size of objects. IE animals or hot chicks.... Or dudes if your into it.....that are on the beach or down the road etc..... Or .308 holes in paper at 400 yards.

Checked this site out. Really awesome the dedication of these guys who carved out history for America. Must have been an honor to meet that guy. My Dad(WWII vet) was able to go on the tour to DC as well. Thanks for sharing this site. The locaTion is so beautiful. I wish I would have had more time to walk around but talking to the man was amazing. He's got diabetes and Parkinson's IIRK but still just cares about people so much. Everyone in the town knows him and his wife. While cleaning up the property a friend of theres just stopped by to make sure we were ok. Such a cool guy. My gramps was involved in a MN remembrance effort here too.

Flu like symptoms and hate for my job mean I am not going in today.... Maybe tomorrow though.

I hope you walked away and decided to wait to get more done. I've really been craving a tattoo recently.

They truly are the greatest generation. Room mates gramps was in the army in germany, mine was on a wooden mine sweeping boat in the navy. A few years back my grandfather was selected to travel to DC and tour all the WW2 memorials. He was part of a cool MN documentary too. Just an amazing life and experience so many of these old timers have. Basically living natural treasures.
