You would only pay 39.90 to taxes though after the 5$ HSA contribution. Unless I'm missing something. That is my understanding, and even if he still paid the full tax amount, having the money in the HSA is really helpful for long term planning. My guess is there is a nuance I'm missing. If not, then Sean can save even more by switching. Either way we learn stuff. The more you know....

I really hope I kill it this month.

I'm only stuck on this as you are a cheep penny pincher, in the politest Scrouge McDuck way.... And as someone who thought they had this particular avenue of preparing down, I am interested.

Isn't the tax a percentage of your income? What goes into the HSA is not counted as income. It directly removes it from your income prior to taxes being calculated. Even if it didn't I would still use an HSA as a way to grow money that principle and interest could then later be used to pay for bills without taxation. Maybe I am missing something and your payroll or income bracket is so high the rules completely change. I helped people with this for 7 years at 1.1M incomes and I am sure others who made more but I didn't know the spouses income....

ISounds like a good first day! Got another big deal and then a medium sized deal. I did about 1/9th the months budget in one day.

The deductions I gain would go towards something that would yield nothing that isn't eaten by the AMT. Basically unless it drops me to a level it won't it doesn't change the taxes paid so therefore it needs to do something else positive. But the money you contribute to the HSA would stay tax free forever. As in never be taxed. Then in retirement or a situation when you don't have insurance you could pay for your medical bills or insurance without being taxed on it. It completely takes 5000+ per year out of your taxable costs and when you spend it 15-20 years from now it will remain tax free. It can also gain interest like a retirement account. So it can basically make all your current and future medical costs tax free. The interest is also tax free. If you max it out and the 401k you can have roughly 20k untaxed now and 5k of it completely tax avoiding for life. And it gains interest. Minimum tax be damned, that 5000 allows you to keep the third uncle Sam would steal.

....the deductions come out before taxes though. Sean I am really confused as to what is going on. The deductions for the HSA come out before federal and state taxes are calculated, like a 401k. Only the HSA deductions are not taxed at all. Unless your work doesn't off pretax deductions... Then I kind of get it, but that would be weird and silly.....

I don't understand how AMT affects pretax deductions. Perhaps you are in such a stratospheric bracket it's past what I understand but the 2 surgeon family I helped out would see a benefit from it. Not because it lowers your gross taxable persey, but it does allow you to pay and save a significant part of your income for future medical costs. Such as COBRA, private plans and other medical needs. I.E. IF you were to spend some time off work where coverage wouldn't follow, you could use the money in the HSA to pay for those costs. You can also use it in retirement to pay for costs that are not Medicare co

That's about what I have. Just under $100 a month for a family with a $4500 deductible. Work provides $1300 of it and the rest is tax free contributions into HSA/FSA. I have a max out of pocket of $1k/yr including my contribution for a whole family. Obviously something is jacked with bumcare Don't they offer an HSA plan? Sure, but Obama fucked that up for us.How??? It is the best plan I have ever seen because of retirement possibilities....
