mj18 to ixl18 need some amperage help
helotaxi replied to smokinkane's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
You always use a PR with an otherwise sealed box. -
Maybe it is a huge gap. It's modeled after the gap between some people's ears...
-
People who don't run 3kw? Not even the majority of consumers use 1kw+ in their system. People on car audio forums are far from a representative sample of aftermarket car audio consumers.

You know there's not an audible difference between 1500 and 2000W, right? There's no reason to match RMS values. Only thing you get usually is more distortion and more heat in the coil. I think the amp will sell well but more with the competition crowd than the average consumer. The 1000D should be a hot seller for sure though.

Since when were court awards tax free? Thanks to the "bailout" inflation will tax that some more. I guess the good news about the economy is that the money you're using to repay your debt is worth a lot less than the money you borrowed. Glad i bought my truck when I did. The price of imports is going up big in the next few years. Assuming a legit case and not some BS...I'd focus entirely on improving my long term financial situation. Get rid of unsecured debt. Invest the rest in something that will hold its value and possibly provide some residual income and the accrual of long term wealth. I'd be looking at down payments on a pair of rental properties. Let someone else pay the mortgage and build your equity for you. With the real estate market as slow as it is, there are some real steals out there on properties that will cash flow almost immediately.

How did I miss all the info on a SAX 50.4? What size will that one be? Same size as a 100.2? What are we looking at dimensionally for the SAZ-1000? If they're all about the same size I might be miffed. That will mean I'll have to get new amps, ones that are actually a better fit for my setup.

Tuning to driver Fs usually isn't the right answer. Most subs want a tuning a bit higher than that, some lower, almost none right at. Without T/S parameters you're just guessing at volume and tuning. Not the best way to get nice response from a sub. At least you're giving it a shot.

Unless you're very good at designing boxes and then building them to exact specification, don't bother with a bandpass setup. As far as the sound from a bandpass, there are a lot of trade-offs that can be made in the design to tailor the box to a specific goal. You can really narrow the passband to boost efficiency. You can give up efficiency for a broader, flat pass band. You can tweak it some more to get good transient response. Several things to consider: All prefab bandpass boxes sound like crap unless they are competently designed with a very specific sub in mind. Because of the acoustic lowpass filter present in a bandpass system and the fact that you should still use a lowpass filter to cut out of band noise, the resulting upper end roll-off is extremely steep. This requires some serious midbass presence to get the sub blended into the rest of hte system smoothly. Bandpass systems can be more efficient than ported systems using the same sub, however that doesn't mean that they have the potential to get louder if there is ample power available. Fact is that bandpass setups put more stress on the driver and it is very likely it will shred itself before you know it with a power level that wouldn't bother the sub in a ported setup.

Too many morons only see numbers like power handling and think that more is always better. All they want is loud and don't care how it sounds. Sadly something like the SD-1 is lost on them.

The goal of a company is profit. Reduce costs to increase margin for a given price point. If that price point happens to be pretty high, so much the better for the company. Amp will run cooler as well.
-
Makes the amp cheaper because they don't have to worry about high current devices in the output stage or anywhere really.

The Power and Grand Touring series had a similar look at one point but the GTIs were the first that had that look. Those are the new GTIs. The old ones are not even similar to the new ones. We're talking more than 15 years ago here.
-
The JLs have an advantage in cone area which is important if output is the goal. Other than that it's impossible to tell which would be louder. There's really more to a stereo system than getting as loud as possible.

I'm glad to hear it's better than St Anger, but the first single really doesn't impress me. What was the first single. I've heard about 75% of the album on XM. It's not as good as the older stuff but it's at least listenable unlike St. Anger and that damn ringing in the drums that runs through the whole album.

Advantages of TL and bandpass enclocures?
helotaxi replied to imhungnurnot's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
Which part? -
I'm talking prior to the XTR2s. The NT series took their place. Power handling of 1000w for the NTs.

Advantages of TL and bandpass enclocures?
helotaxi replied to imhungnurnot's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
Almost no reason to go with a TL setup in a car. Best reason to go with a bandpass is that its tuning is independent of the car. With a normal ported enclosure, the tuning of the enclosure is actually different than what it would be free-air because of the effects of the air in the cabin of the car change the tuning. Not so with a bandpass. Still hardly worth the trouble 99% of the time. -
At least the songs themselves, production not withstanding, are night and day better than the garbage that was St. Anger. Blame Rick Rubin, BTW. He was the producer on this one. I've got it but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. I've only heard the tracks on XM. Whatever version they're playing there wasn't horrible, but I'm also listening on factory speakers at this point.

Clamping an amp?
helotaxi replied to gearstix's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Could reference that as well depending on context. -
The Cardiac series subs were made by Petras. First really high powered subs I remember were the Orion XTRs with a rating of 800 watts. They were made for a single sub to be run of a 2100 HCCA @ 2 ohms. The other I remember were the GTI subs from jbl which were based on pro audio drivers. Late 80s/early 90s a 400w sub was beefy and few amps were capable of making much more power than that. All amps worth having were pricey.

What sucks is that none of the above make a decent compact p/u anymore. I was forced to go Japanese (all made in the US but still) to get a good compact. I haven't owned a truck made by the big-3 in the last 20+ years. My '69 Chevy was night and day more reliable than my '85 Ranger. My dad owned five or six Chevys between '81 and '06. He never had a single problem with any of them. He drives a Ford now and he's happy with it as well (It did have a near total electrical system failure about 18 mos ago where the gauge cluster, A/C, radio and a host of other things just up and quit going down the road. Truck kept running but the engine itself was the only thing that was working. Short in the dash was the culprit. It also needed a full replacement of the front brakes at around 19k miles.). The reason that he went to Ford was price. New, they are expensive as crap, but they don't hold their value worth squat. A Ford that's $3-5k more than its GM counterpart when new will sell for $3-5k less in 2 years from what I've seen. Usually no reason to buy a domestic vehicle new (unless you're looking for something specific that you won't find in the used market) and even less of a reason with the Fords. I liked the new style Mustang when it first came out, but now that every 3rd car on the road seems to be one, they've lost all appeal. The new Flex is retardedly expensive. The last good T-bird was the '96 (which along with the Mark VII is one of the most beautiful cars ever made). The new Focus is uglier than the first model which I didn't think was possible. The design of the new model GMs coming out is getting markedly better. The Saturns are all basically Opels. The Pontiac G8 is a Holden. The Solstice/Sky has been very well received. Should be pretty certain that the new Camaro will, as always eat the Mustang alive. Ford still doesn't have anything that pretends to rival the Vette. Chrysler? Don't get me started. I loved the Magnum. It is no more as of '09. Other than the Jeep brand and the SRTs, nothing they make even piques my interest. They ruined the Dakota and the Durango. The Ram was always a POS. The late 90's Avenger was a good looking car, the new one along with the Sebring are crap and ugly to boot. The Challenger might have potential but I don't see it lasting long with current gas prices.

AudioControl EQS for active
helotaxi replied to nickeveready's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Lots of wasted bands of equalization with that processor installed after the crossover. Consider that every band below a HPF and above a LPF is not doing anything and it should quickly become apparent that there isn't a lot of use for that processor in a high end system using active processing. It has its place, but not in a 3-way active system. -
Clamping an amp?

You only need two out of three, the last figure's free. I remember that from my fifth grade science teacher. Yeah, that's what he said. Basic algebra and Ohm's law. -
I never heard anything but good from the original Dr. Crankenstein. Those weren't sold anywhere but car audio shops AFAIK. There seems to be a product line of the same name that was pretty much junk in the interim. Don't know anything about the new line. BTW, to whoever said it, Pyramid was never anything but crap. Pyle used to be OK, but was not at the same level as RF. I'd say they're closer to RF now compared to then, not because Pyle got better but because RF isn't nearly what it used to be.
