    Sound dampening

I put some in the hatch area of my car (97 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport) today and down in the spare wheel area but that's about as far as I got because I was getting too hot and hungry. I'll work on the rear doors and back seat area next week, then work my way forward from there. After I got cleaned up I drove down the road for some ice cream and maybe it's just the CD I put in (the new Big & Rich) but the subs kind of sounded... softer? But I also think they were a little cleaner sounding. Is that normal? Is that one of the properties of sound dampening? I guess I was expecting an opposite result, thinking it would focus more of the sound towards me. I primarilly put it in to eliminate rattles and because this car has one of the noisiest cabins I've ever experienced. I was also wondering if there were any benefits to adding another layer on top of what I laid today. Are some areas more beneficial than others? Is it overkill? I'm not trying to build a professional system necessarilly and I'm not wanting to blow a bunch of money in search of 'perfection', but if I have some left over and it will do me good then I might as well put it to use. Thanks for all your help, fellas. Sorry to be such a nuisance...

Assist me in choosing system components

Tell me about it... I've been "out of the loop" for 15 years and everything has changed. Back then everything was sealed and all you had to worry about was getting the biggest magnet for the biggest thump. Back then the only real subwoofer options were JL, Orion, and Kicker (MTX was starting to make a name for itself and Hollywood had just entered the scene making a big splash); for good amps you had Phoenix Gold and PPI (Orions were decent); for components pretty much just Infinity and MB Quart. Man, I remember in the 80s (well, this was like 88-89 when I was building my first car) going to the junkyard and finding a 'sound amplifier' or something similar that mounted under the dash. My cousin (who thought he knew what he was doing) and I spent the whole day trying to figure that thing out and by time we got done with it you had to turn on the headlights to even get the radio to work... Anyway, nice truck. I really like those newer Tacomas and have considered trading in for one. I'm sorry I can't be of more help but I did want to toss in this url for a site that does Tacoma specific work - www.tacotunes.com

    Wire efficiency?

Ok, I've got another question. I'm just going to copy and paste this from a thread I started at CA. I don't like to post the same question in more than one location at a time but it doesn't look like I'm going to get any kind of response there. The guide in question is here Thank you for any assistance.

    Wire efficiency?

Is my 60A inline fuse ok, then? What if I upgrade to 4ga? Oh, and I still don't really get what the 50% efficiency means. Is it only running at half the rated power? Would larger power lines help with the efficiency? Thanks again.

    Port tuning?

I've been using a sub & box combo that I picked up at a local car audio store a few years ago to get me by and have recently begun thinking about upgrading. So I've been reading up and just trying to educate myself on the matter and tonight I went out to try and calculate the box volume and tune of the ports. Just wondered if I figured this out right. I used a calculator here (the vent length calculator at the bottom). I had the vent length so I swapped frequencies in and out until I got one to match. Here's what I know. The box contains 2 10s. It's 30.5" wide, 13" tall, 9.5" deep at the top and 12" deep at the bottom (so I used an average depth of 10.75"). When I calculate those and divide by 1728 I get a volume of 2.47 cu.ft. which is probably close but not completely accurate because the measurements are from the outside and do not include the divider. The ports are 2.25" wide and about 4" deep. By using that calculator I figured the tune to be about 39Hz. Does that sound about right? It didn't account for the size of the driver. Does that matter?

    Port tuning?

I'm not sure about the thickness because it was raining out there yesterday when I took the measurements and didn't want to stand in it while I removed all the screws holding the sub in to check. Yes it's a prefab so probably not more than .5 inch? Assuming so, that would make it 29" wide (subtracting the chamber divider), 12" tall and 9.75" avg depth for a total of 1.96 cu.ft net volume. There are 2 ports, one for each chamber. Playing with the calculator again puts me around 44hz. Thanks for your help
