If you really want opinions, which through my experience isn't really that helpful, I like the way the Hertz sound and for the price type R Alpines sounded good to me, but they may sound like shit to you. I also liked my Boston Acoustics. My ears opinion does you no good though because your ears hear differently and your vehicle is different than mine so the same comps will sound completely different in yours than mine. Whatever you decide with your front stage, ditch the rears. It seems like rear speakers might make the sound more full, but it really confuses and complicates the sound stage. I would notice that when I moved my head in the car for any reason everything got really confusing to my ears, especially if I leaned my head back into my head rest. all of a sudden I would be pulled into the back seat. It was so dramatic. Like I was sticking my head in a room listening to one system then turning around and listening to a completely different system in another room. I didn't like it. too confusing. I ditched the rears and am much happier. My $0.2 based on my ears and my experience. Quite subjective isn't it?

It's sad to think that doing the right thing is so rare these days. Good to know integrity isn't dead, which is why I trust the people/advice I find here at SSA. Just another example of why SSA rocks! And you're killing me Impious! Hey Jake, you've got a golden ticket!

Looking at the scan speak hds tweets. Ya I won't be doing any fiberglassing for a while. There will be extensive testing before I committ to anything

Ya, I make due with a jig saw and sandpaper but I own a nice router, just need to stop procrastinating and make a jig

12's? Keep me posted for sure! Never knew how much I loved bass until I found SSA...now I can't seem to get enough. Some XCONS would make my day!...no wait, my year!

Congrats man! Way to represent. How long have you been doing this before you decided to compete? Building systems I mean...

Congrats man, awesome vid and beautiful sub. Enjoy

I never really understood the advice given here until I started messing with things. Took some time but i am starting to understand what "it's all about the install" truly means. ...that advice used to annoy the hell out of me

I am saving to upgrade my front stage and was pretty set on a set of hsk 165 xl's but I have been reading about active crossovers and I am interested. Are there any speakers that work better than others on an active setup? Would I still be able to use these Hertz active down the road? I am looking to keep it in the $600 range but I am also a believer in do it right the first time. Will be placing the new speakers in the front doors of my '96 Accord sedan, powering them with a 300 watt 4 channel alpine and ditching the 6x9's in the back. Any advice or recommendations for a good active setup? I listen to my fair share of hip hop and dub step but when I listen to classical guitar I want to feel like Andres Segovia is in the car playing live!

There were a few others I was looking at that were a little cheaper but nothing that has the same feedback as the HDS' s and none that seem to be a "better" option at the moment for my current set up and goals

In my searches for raw drivers I came across Renaudio. Everything looks good on paper so I was considering looking into giving them a try. Has anyone ever used their drivers before? Any thoughts or opinions on their quality, sound, or customer service?

Is the HDS the same tweet now that it is a scan speak not a peerless?
-
I see. That explains why I kept getting links to topics on Morel when I was searching.

I knew I was going to have to go with a tweeter that would play low but hadn't come across the HDS's. Thanks for the recommendation. I will be posting pics and feedback as this phase of my build progresses. It will take a couple more months to complete I'm sure but I am excited to learn and step up the sq of my system. Thank you M5 and lithium for all the help and guidance

Alpine "Tune It" App...Thoughts?
handman84 posted a topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Just came across Alpine's new CDE-HD149BT HU and was wondering what others think of their latest and greatest. The new twist is that you can tune it via a smartphone app. Supposedly you can tweak time correction and crossover frequencies, plus a 9 band parametric EQ. The app also lets you share your tuning settings via facebook and apparently lets you save tons of settings and makes tuning easier...hype? I am looking for an active capable hu but haven't fell in love with anything yet. Hear nothing but good things about Alpine but can't find one that seems to open my wallet. I really liked this when I first saw it but the more I think of it the more it seems a little hokey...IDK Has anyone seen this HU? Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on it? -
Fair enough. Especially if a SEAS, Peerless or Dayton is every bit as good. Didn't know if they were anything special

I keep thinking of other things or places I could move the woofer but am not familiar enough with that level of customization to feel confident doing it. This being my first attempt at putting together a nice sounding system I know it will be a learning experience anyway and I really don't want get into something I can't fully recover from. The real frustrating part is I am just flipping a coin and hoping for the best with the drivers I pic. I don't have a way that I am aware of to audition anything other than big box stuff. I have learned that I like the sound of a paper cone and soft tweeter so I guess its not all bad... I am looking for drivers that will fit, then matching a tweeter that will play low enough to blend well when I cross it over. Is there any other factors I should be considering? I feel like I am making this too easy. I realize there is a learning curve but I don't have money to burn. If I'm guessing here, which it feels like I am, I would like to make the most educated guess possible.

So I did a bit more measuring and found I have 5.25" depth and just under 7.5" diameter for woofers in my doors. I will be trying my hand at glassing my a pillars, so I am open to size up to 4" diameter for tweets. I will be positioning them on axis. The problem is that the stock grills are not removable, I can cut and customize some, but the shape of the door panels limit what I can do. So even though I can fit 7" drivers, I can't really get them positioned very well, and quite a bit of the driver will be blocked by the door panel... Would it be better to go with 6.5" woofers in this case? What are my options without building new door panels?

Alpine "Tune It" App...Thoughts?
handman84 replied to handman84's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
That is the HU I have been looking to get. The only thing it doesn't have is HD radio and I can live without that. Also not too sure about the look, but now I'm just being picky. Got excited about this new Alpine at first, but the more I read the less interested I become -
different size batteries
handman84 replied to 1two3's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
If it is purely an aux battery then cca's don't matter and your ah and watt rating is close enough with the xs batteries that there is no reason to go with the 34 over the 51, especially if you aren't playing your system with the car off. I don't know how they get the watt rating on their batteries so I can't comment on that. Still a little confused on that myself -

There is a big difference between a 34 and a 51
