Recommendations for a first time Build on a budget
handman84 replied to DBC420's topic in Build Logs
Are you an spl or sq guy? What are your goals? If it is between the Alpine and the Fi I would personally go with Fi. Eggy's advice is very sound as the upgrades necessary to run more power are very expensive. Whatever you decide to do remember that the enclosure will play a big role in how your subs sound and respond. Don't slack on your enclosure! -
I know believe me. I have started a few threads and been frustrated as hell feeling like I was getting no useful info. Then I realized that all of the info I was being given was geared toward getting me to think and spend time listening to figure out what I was missing or wanting, and really listen to how adjustments affect sound (quality, output etc.) Everything you do has a huge effect on output from the way your box is facing to something as simple as rolling down your windows. It just takes time to figure out your car, your equipment, and your install.

I had a problem blowing subs too, and I shouldn't have because I matched them to the rms output of my amp...then I see people who know their shit running subs off of amps rated twice the rms power of their subs for years without incident! Sigh, that is when I knew it must be me and not my equipment, a tough pill to swallow. I had two main problems: 1) I was expecting way too much from my setup. Meaning I had a 10" sub in a prefab box to save trunk space and I thought it should shake my rear view mirror off of my windshield...now I am not saying you are as ignorant as me, I only bring my problem up because it led to the real reason my shit kept failing... 2) I HAD NO IDEA HOW TO SET THINGS UP PROPERLY! My goals were also not clearly defined, I had no idea what I wanted. I thought bass was bass, you hook it up, it shakes your brain. So when I wasn't getting what I wanted I boosted the gains, then turned down the gains and turned up the bass boost, then turned up the gains again, then messed with the eq, and like magic I had the sound I was looking for followed shortly after by the smell of a burnt sub coming from my trunk. Then back to square one. I still have no idea what I am doing and not quite getting the output from my xcon I would like but I know it's me not the equipment. So I error on the side of caution with my settings until I get things figured out and I suggest you do the same with your xcon, it is a phenomenal driver. Or do whatever the fuck you want just post pics of the install

I had the same issue when I switched to my 80prs. It sounds like we are experiencing the same problem. As soon as I switched my hu I was not satisfied with the bass output. The sq is amazing and it blends perfectly but when I want spl I can't seem to get it. I always have my eq flat, not a big fan of presets, but on a whim i started cycling through the presets and when I got to the super bass preset I got the output I was looking for. my clipping light didn't come on either so I have kept it this way for a while and am satisfied for the most part. I am trying to figure this out as well.

The cuts are made! I will hopefully be done with the box this weekend. I have never used anything other than mdf for a box before and am excited to experience the difference

80prs help
handman84 replied to smashedz28's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Not a fan of distortion at all. That's why I like the xcon so much. The bass is so warm and clean and clear. Just having a rough time getting the new setup dialed in. The 80 prs give has so many control options I am just not familiar with or certain how to set properly that I am finding it is taking a little longer to get things set just right. This hu is allowing my ears to teach me a lot about sound and what sounds good to me in my setup. -

80prs help
handman84 replied to smashedz28's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
I couldn't get pandora to work on the hu side either, I plugged my phone (galaxy s3) into the usb and it said device not compatible. As far as the subs, on my old pioneer i had the loudness turned to low, I turn it off on the 80prs...took me a minute to realize that was the case, so I boosted some low frequencies on the eq and reset my gains, not completely satisfied with it yet but I am learning. I am glad you like the HU. It is crazy powerful and very nice and convenient to have all that control from the drivers seat -
80prs help
handman84 replied to smashedz28's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
I had a hard time getting my sub to sound good after i installed my 80prs too. It was clean and balanced, but when I wanted it to get loud and blur my vision I had a hard time achieving that. It wasn't until the other day when I started tweeking the eq that I was able to get my subs to shine again. -
Really nice man! I would love to hear an under dash horn setup. I have never even heard horns in a vehicle before I am such a rookie
