    Term-lab Alternative

The LCD Bass Meter is a stand alone unit. You can plug it into a pc using the software that comes with it for a more detailed and visual reading. The USB Bass meter is plug and play. I am looking forward to getting this item. It seems my bad timing strikes again. My payment will not reach SPL-Labs before they close for a short time off. It seems they are a small operation / one man show. My item wont ship till later this month. It wont be till early next month before I post my review. Unless someone else has one and would like to chime in. Sorry guys. I'm still open to testing suggestions.

    Term-lab Alternative

The LCD Bass Meter is $330 plus shipping on the SPL-Labs website. If I can arrange some side by side testing with the term-lab I will. Here is a link to SPL-Labs Youtube page. Clicky Linky They have some side by side testing of all their products. The use of a air compressor type device to test the pressure meters makes me raise an eyebrow. I'd like to see real world testing. Which, is what I'll be doing.

BigJon, thanks for posting the pics. They came out looking good. It was a good get-together, I look forward to the next one. So, how bout that IB setup metering 135.8 on 480 watts. Ha, that's about as silly as my flex vids. Ha ha!

    Term-lab Alternative

I have decided to go with the LCD Bass Meter. For a few bucks more it give me the option of not having to drag out my laptop to meter my system. Sometimes I'm only capable of seeing as far as my nose, so I'd like to here some suggestions as to what would everyone like to know and what to test. Don't be humble, share your thoughts. Thanks for everyone to your input and support. Cheers

    Term-lab Alternative

I've been in contact with SPL-Labs. They offer this other product. It's their LCD Bass Meter. The USB Bass Meter and the LCD Bass Meter use the same sound pressure monitoring sensor as the Term-Lab. I'm kind of at odds of which to get. I have asked a few other questions in hopes of helping me make a decision. I figure since I'm going to be the guinea pig I might as well ask if there is any interest in the community for the LCD Bass Meter?

    Term-lab Alternative

Well I dropped them an e-mail just to see what they'd say. They responded promptly, and answered my questions. They even pushed their latest product. It seems they have their stuff together. The USB Bass meter seems pretty straight forward. It plugs directly into the pc. Open the software, which is included in a disc along with some test tone, and bam, your ready to measure. No calibrating required. Which is what I like about it. I'm not keen on what sensor they are using for the USB Bass meter. They do mention a Panasonic mic capsule for their stand alone LCD Display bass meter. The last time I read about using one of these capsules to make your own measuring mic was for the measuring software HOLMImpulse. Which got me thinking. Another software you can use this capsule on is ARTA which is similar to HOLMImpulse. Funny thing is, all three come from the same part of the world, eastern Europe/Russia. I wonder if they are connected in any way? Any who, coming back down to reality. All the mentioned programs are good at what they do, no doubt. My issue is one needs to know what they are doing. Especially when calibrating sound cards and measuring mic. Some thing I am not good at. Hence my search. With easter coming up I am putting my search on pause for the weekend. I'll shoot off some more e-mails and see if I take the plunge. Post your thoughts, and lets see what we come up with. Cheers

Infinitely Baffled or Just Plain Confused

Thanks everyone. I got the system metered today. Big thanks to CadillacMatt and BigJon for making it happen. Providing eyewitness testimonial, Inkfx. He was there as well, at what I will be referring to as the Last Minute South Texas Mini Meet. Read about it here. The score, 135.8 somewhere in between 25Hz and 35Hz using a sweep from 1Hz to 60Hz. All the windows were closed, the driver side door was open and the meter was in the passenger side kick. I'm totally pleased with it. Granted in not a ground pounder like the other guys there, but for 480 watts I say not too shabby. As soon as I can get the pics off my phone I'll post the score. Thanks to everyone at the get together. It was lots of fun. Great music with good people.
  17. I've been here long enough. Time to nut up or shut up, as the saying goes. Here are some pics of what I built. The goal: Loud. How loud? 140+ on the Term lab. The challenge: To do it with low power and a sTock electrical system. Journey with me as I go for the moon. First some info of my build. The car: 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra A.K.A The Cream Puff Head Unit: JVC KD-HDW10 A basic CD player with a built in HD tuner and RCA outputs Amps: 2 US Acoustics USB-4085 1 at 85 watts x 4 @ 4ohms (mids and highs) 1 at 240 watts x 2 @ 4 ohms (subs) Fronts: Powerbass 3.5" coax in stock location Rear: MTX Thunder Axe 5-1/4" components Subs: 2 Ascendant Audio Atlas 15" Electical: Stock Stay tuned for pics. Thanks for looking.

    SSA South Texas mini-meet

It was a fun get together. Kind of last minute, but that's the only way they work out. Big thanks to Matt for putting it together and inviting. Big thanks to BigJon for the term-lab time and coming out. I'm totally pleased with my 135.8 in the kick, all windows closed and driver side door open. I did it on a sweep from 1Hz to 60Hz. The peak was in the low 30's could be in the high 20's, not sure. Viva infinite baffle. Ha ha. It's good meeting you, Inkfx. Can't wait till next time.

Excellent build. I can't wait to hear you impression on the sound. I dig the car. Clean and classy.

Infinitely Baffled or Just Plain Confused

It's not air tight. The rear deck gets covered with the factory trim on the cabin side. It's just a piece of 1/4" fiberboard with carpeting on it. It covers up the openings in the rear deck. It seems to get the job done. Your build sounds interesting. I'd like to know how it turns out. I'm eyeing the IB3's as well. Yes these subs are IB capable. With a resistor on the second coil, they'll also work in ported and sealed enclosures as well. Very novel if you ask me.

Infinitely Baffled or Just Plain Confused

True I heard bread loaves and other baked goods have a natural resonating frequency of 30Hz which will improve the bass output by a minimum of 14.668 dB Yes, I personally prefer cupcakes, I think the strawberry-frosting ones improve my scores the most. Now we're talking.

    Ascendant Audio Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra

Thanks. This is probably the main reason why I went IB A weeks worth of groceries and still bumping. Ha ha.
  24. So I've got this build log going on. You can check it out HERE. It involves, dare I say, some old school Ascendant Audio Atlas subs. Taking it a step farther, I installed them IB style. Lastly, this is a, get as much bass as I can with 500 watts without losing any trunk space because I'm a sensible family man with financial limits, build. If you're interested check it out and let me know what you think. Here is a couple of teasers. Thanks for looking.

Infinitely Baffled or Just Plain Confused

I will as soon as I find a meter. My best guess is 134 on music maybe a 136 on tones and heavy clipping. We'll see. That includes a trunk full of groceries. Hehe.
