comparison pictures massive Magnetar coil
Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
The daily coil on this motor is 45mm one way linear. The the two gaps in sync including the stray flux fields is 90mm. In a watered down explaination of this motor is basically a motor with a 90mm thick top plate (that has even saturation, impossible normal large top plate designs) with a 50mm winding width underhung coil -
Types of wood for light weight boxes?

you'll be fine with whatever you use. as long as you have decent bracing to minimize flexing the vehicle environment will hide any issues that would be due to wood density. The noise floor is very high in a vehicle. i have test boxes built from floor substrate (3/4 pine) and there is not ant audible differences from the 13 plt birch boxes I have.
-

It is physically impossible. Plywood is a laminant. The center ply could have a void the size of a dinner plate and you would never know until you cut it into. -

If they have it get the stuff with the oak vaneer. It's a bit sturdier vaneer. -
Go on parts express and look at the clearance stuff

I have used the stuff from Home Depot with no problems however it is not birch. It is a cheaper hardwood with a birch vaneer. -

I am no way a SPL guy I have ZERO experience competing so I will be looking for seasoned competitors to do testing to see if it is a viable option. To give a few comparisons as far as motor strength the two big neo's out there, the DDZ has a BL of ~35 and the IA warden is a bit stronger. The typical sensitivity on a average sub is in the upper 80's DB at 1 watt 1 meter. The Magnetar with SPL coil with 10 hard spiders would have a sensitivity of ~102. Couple that with the massive amount of power it could handle it could have the ability to get pretty loud in knowledgeable hands. -

Not a good pic but all I have at the moment. 270mm OD with two 1 inch thick magnets. Two 1 inch thick top plates. -

MMAG technology. granted this is the spl coil so linear xmax is only ~10mm. magnetic force in both gaps are within a few percent. The daily coil would sit center of the "humps" which are the toplplates. As the coil loses force form one gap it gains in the other. The daily coil offers ~45mm one way linear xmax. What you see below is the magnetic force across the moving range of the coil -
I normally hate that type of covering with a Passion but that looks pretty damn good

UPDATE AS OF 8/6/13 spoke with my supplier on Monday. Custom embossed dust caps will be in on Tuesday. The only other parts we are waiting on are the frames which are due in on 8/17/13 (my BD woopie!!!!). If I have not heard from Pat by the end of this week I will call and see when he is expected to be completed with his testing and videos. Pre order will continue till the day all parts are in and ready to assemble. As of now that date is expected to be 8/17/13. -
Active or Passive Cross-over?
Quentin Jarrell replied to Pradege's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
The cross over was designed to give a certain frequency response in a specific environment. Maybe your environment is different or maybe you just don't like the designed response. An active equalizer can be used to compensate being you already have them. If you didn't already own them it would be cheaper in the long run to do an active set up from the beginning. -
The Characteristics of Net Volume and Port Area
Quentin Jarrell replied to Sencheezy's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
It's a 2 inch port compared to a 6 inch port. And a 6 inch port is a LOT of port area for a 10 inch driver with 5mm xmax.- 48 replies

I don't agree, as well as Vance Dickason. It's very clearly written in black and white.- 48 replies

The Characteristics of Net Volume and Port Area
Quentin Jarrell replied to Sencheezy's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
No, at the same tuning it will not behave differently. Below tuning yes it will unload easier as shown above. The pictures above are the same enclosure volume, different port areas, tuned to the same tuning with increase in power. All while measured on a Klippel analyzer. The out come can not be disputed it is actually real world testing via a calibrated analyzer. Arguing hte fact is akin to arguing that apples dont fall from trees.- 48 replies

The Characteristics of Net Volume and Port Area
Quentin Jarrell replied to Sencheezy's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
Most of the information above was in taken from my SSA Evil. Which has a high xmax value. I have a low score in my current setup, which is 8.3 net with only 130cuin of port tuned at 33hz. I am completely flat from 30hz to 50hz. After 50hz it begins to slightly lose output, but anything below 30hz I have a really big dip in output. I ask these questions becuase almost every program I've used, suggests that I use at least 180cuin of port. Which is far more than what I have. And I believe that the programs are correct because right now I don't believe I am reaching max xmax. Which is crazy because of how much power I am applying (5500 watts). So, this all ties in because, as stated above, my theory is that I have too little port area combined with the power I am utilizing. I am "assuming", that thet too little port area combined with high power is causing me to "choke" the air that is being displaced. Or in other terms, I have too much water pressure to get through the water hose. Can you give an example of what you're saying? Don't need to, your on the right track having a larger enclosure is more efficient and also opening up the port will help release more pressure from the enclosure helping you get Max excursion easier. You do have to be careful with how much you do open the port with your enclosure being as large as it is though so you don't run into mechanical issues. At 180in. Sq I think you'll be just fine and should net you some great gains. No, larger ports do not allow the driver to hit xmax easier. Top pic 2'' port. Bottom pic 6'' port. The top lines in both graphs are group delays and the bottom lines are excursion at each power lever. Very clear no noticeable difference in xmax. Again only slight ripple shift due to FS change. Come on guys this book is only like 30 bucks shipped to your door.- 48 replies
