THE EPIC MAGNETAR THREAD
Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
You won't find anyone with a coil to fit it. And they wouldn't be able to order just a few precision wouldn't do it as making a handful especially something this size in small quantities. For reference this coil cost me 75 bucks so if you add the typical 100-150 percent mark up you will be spending at least $150 on just the coil even if they could get their hands on a couple. Besides the fact you won't gain anything but looks as the typical parts being used don't offer anymore throw. My soft parts have been over 40mm outward with no physical damage. This has been confirmed with a klippel analyzer. Besides once you get past 30mm the motor starts running out of motor strength with spl coil. The daily coil offers about 55mm one way. But proper baskets and softparts are still at least a year away to utilize the full 55mm one way linear throw. spl coil has a 50mm winding length the spl has a 95mm lond winding length -

Parameters are found here: http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/topic/60471-ethos-15-parameters-and-klippel-graphs/ 12 inch sub weighs about 60 pounds. Size, if you mean physical OD, is 8 inch. Actual CMS Klippel (yes I actually test and post my Klippel results) graph can be found in the link. The coil is aluminum. dual 2 and dual one ohm. I am still working on getting all this info together. I get a little bid of A.D.D. and take on too many projects at one time. The 12 inch version is going out for klippel testing this week however the 15 was spot on with FEA so the projected 1.5 cubic foot enclosure tuned to 32hz should be the mean recommended enclosure. By the way I use warm large signal theile small parameters rather than the normal "small" signal as "large" signal is a more accurate representation of the transducer. You will see that Re rises to over 6 ohms when warm. This is typical of all transducers however for reference this is a dual two ohm sub and should be wired as so. Also if you run DB drag you can see the power compression graph and see power compression on the sub is only about 2.25 DB -

Boy I wish. I've been working with the help of Pat Turnmire (my transducer engineer go to guru and klippel tester) and Nick Wright (my supplier and build house) for nearly two years on the Ethos and several other samples that are waiting for assembly and testing. And I'm still working on getting a few final Large Signal parameters and other nic-nak stuff published. -

well I know the Ethos performs thanks to Jon's review and it is in stock and the Magnetar is just in proto stage. And the Magnetar and the Ethos are two different monsters. I personally would not play the magnetar daily its just not designed to musically. The huge motor force will create a massive ripple in response around tuning. But some like that type of sound, there are plenty of guys that are running other "SPL" subs daily on music. Only time will tell how it performs. It's extremely hard to model something like this or get a general idea of what will happen because nothing this strong (that any of my contacts are aware of) has been done. -

If all goes well, and I am able to find some with ample power to abuse it for a month or so (I know a guy that knows a guy that has a NS1 in a Lincoln) I will do a special pre-order group buy for the first 50 drivers at a REALLY low price compared to the competition. IF I am able to get 50 drivers pre-sold by the end of January then I'd expect them to be shipping to customers for June. -

12's my friend will work. The motor is 1/4 inch shy of a 12 inch cut out. -

It's kinda like saying you have to floor a Dodge Viper to get the big 13 inch wide tires to spin over. For reference the motor force to moving mass ratio on the Ethos is ~1 to 2.8. The motor force to moving mass of the Magnetar will be in the neighborhood of ~3 to 1. To put that back into the Viper analogy it would be equivalent to a ~10,000 horse viper. If we are able to get ten hard spiders on the sub which I doubt, it will take ~5,000 watts rms to push the cone 30mm one way in a 3 cubic foot box tuned to 60 hertz. The 1w/1m sensitivity rating should be around 102 db. This is it coned to a 15. 10 hard spiders is equivalent to needing to set nearly 100 pounds to move the cone 10mm one way. A 300 pound guy could literally stand on the cone and not bottom the coil out. -

I would consider the motor with this coil set up strictly SPL. It should have, and I say should have as it hasn't been assembled yet, the strongest motor ever put into production. Per FEA modeling it will have a BL of ~55 at one ohm. If the factory in China assembled it using the correct magnets (it uses two different grades of ferrite) the 55 figure should be close as my FEA programs are extremely accurate. Per Precision Econowind this is one of if not the biggest coils they have ever built for a subwoofer. The "daily" coil set up is still extremely strong. It should have a BL of ~22-25 TM at one ohm. At this figure it is still as strong as some Neo drivers on the market. -
We usually pull ours up by hand. Considering they have been here since 7:30 and I just got water now I am glad I am not...They gotta be charging by the hour OR there is no easy access to the well. You can get a new well and tank put in for that price around here. You can get a 5 horse 175 PSI pump and tank put in for 5k. Our water table is also around 200 feet here.

Ur a big strapping young lad I'm sure you'd be able to yang it up.

Had that happen to me last year. At 300 feet and fried electrical. It got hit by lightning, so I figured Nationwide would be on my side. Nope. $3600 to have it done (opted for the best pump available and the best wire) and they shit on me. Fuck Nationwide. I dropped those c-words. Shoulda went to lowes. They got 1h submergable pumps for like 3 bills.

thinkign of make a big chance in subs
Quentin Jarrell replied to midnightE39's topic in General Audio
4 inches isn't enough to cancel out ~65 hertz as it's over 17 feet. If response got better when the box was turned around it's due to transfer function or the vehicle is just a sound barrier and the trunk will not allow that particular area to resonate through the cabin. If it was rta'd you'd have a better idea of what the issue is. -
You'd be looking at $213 assembled and shipped.

A custom built 15 from my spare parts rack I am building for a buddy. It's going to be ran in a 4 cubic foot enclosure tune to 34 hertz on a Kicker ZX500.1 in a Chevy Avalanche. As a side note I can do this for other people as well.

thinkign of make a big chance in subs

This has my vote for comment of the day. This disclaimer could probably prevent quite a few hurt feelings... Actually, I am a club DJ. I am fully aware of what he was referring to, i'm a newbie to this forum, and I know more than most people I meet about car audio. My last setup was 2x Kicker 07CVR12's in a 3.5 cube box port tuned @ 40hz. I had none of these cancellation issues, I'd wanted an Fi sub for a while and decided to try them out with an SSD15, ported in 3 cubes tuned @ 37 hz port back sub up. I believe that the 60-70hz dropoff (where it is most noticeable ~12db) is a result of cancellation from the secondary waves bouncing off the rear of the trunk (near the tail lights) and hitting the waves coming off of the cone at just the right timing, there are only about 4 inches of clearance above the subwoofer cone, the roof of the trunk lined with Q-mat and i'm not sure how much is necessary, my rear deck is mostly metal and simply punching holes in it is out of the question. I have only a decent sized ski hole to vent into the cabin, which was fine with the kicker 12's. Note that when i open my trunk and watch the subwoofer and box, 2 things happen; the subwoofer itself vibrates and moves the box around slightly (wasting energy that needs to be sound) and while the trunk is open, the sub seems to play all the frequencies i give it just fine, So i am assuming my sub up port back orientation is causing cancellation issues in that top bass range. I'd also like to note that it seems that right after 70 hz the response picks right back up again, i cross my sub and mids at 100hz and it plays everything just fine up to that point. Even higher if i turn the LPF up a bit, i have my subsonic on about 32hz, phase @ 0, no bass boost, my gains are set correctly. If i multiply the tuning freqency of the box by 2, does that give me the point where the subwoofer cone is moving the most? Sit in the back seat and see if that is indeed the problem. If this is the case then making a big change in drivers wouldn't sole the problem, or try turning the box around. -
$80 each shipped with one coil.

Even though I have been in this industry for nearly 12 years I am a competition NOOB!!! I'd like to see some type of competition section. I easily view this site twice an hour daily! However I find myself going to other sites to find info on comp rules, ect. I'm sure it would be very beneficial to a lot of people here. Maybe Mark and Aaron could even get with the owners of the leagues and get them to set up league sections here to help inspiring competitors. I'm sure it would help greatly with traffic on the site as well.
