Preliminary Magnetar 18 parameters
Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
For comparison below are BL curve, symmetry, and inductance curve of the Ethos 15. Although it is a good driver it still has the non linearity of a standard overhung driver. Compare the graphs to the Magnetar above. -
Need to get set up on some of them government checks. They go out every 3rd of the month.

balance/SQ, lossless line voltage?
Quentin Jarrell replied to ncc74656's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
I highly doubt you will ever see a proper installation either. I've been in the 12 volt industry for 12 years and I have not found many competent installers. But it's not their fault it is the way the industry works. The average shop charges about 90 bucks an hour in labor. It takes me a good half a day to set up a proper infinite baffle coaxial install and I have over a decade of experience and a ton of tools and jigs for damn near ever vehicle prior to 2005. Now how many customers are willing to spend $500 plus in installation costs on a set of coaxial? It's just not gonna happen. Th loudspeaker cookbook is the best source for information. Period. There is no one else on earth that has designed, built, tested, and installed more product than Vance. Period. And the great thing about his books like any good author is he lists ALL of his references down to the page so if you do t understand or want to learn more about a particular subject the reference is listed right there. -
It's a baby bucket around 44 yards. The bigger ones run 65.

preliminary specs in 5 cube box tuned to 32. These WILL change as I need to make the gap smaller to increase BL -
THE EPIC MAGNETAR THREAD

A ~8 percent loss of BL to 25mm one way ain't too shabby. Suspension hit its limits this is why it was only measured to ~26mm one way. When the production run comes in I'm going to get them to turn off the suspension limits and let it run until the spiders hit the basket. -

We used smith machine quite a bit with bands.

Those might be the grossest chips I've ever had. Tried some last night. I am pretty sure it is a southern thang. More like a mid eastern US thing. We don't eat that nasty shit down here.

ALL PRICING DOES NOT INCLUDE SHIPPING 15 inch Ethos drop in recone with centering ring for dust cap $73.95 12 inch Ethos drop in recone with centering ring for dust cap $TBA (expect to be a few bucks cheaper) 4 ounce CA glue plus 4 ounce accelerator for spider to basket and dust cap to cone joints (plenty to do two 15 inch recones) $24.95 4 ounce rubber glue for surround to basket joint (plenty for two recones) $14.95 No pics at the moment. Marky Mark will be using his skills in a few weeks to build a website and do a few professional shots of the recones and products for me.

Google "falling numbers". Easy concept to grasp and is biological. Looked it up, sounds perfect, thanks. Basically the number reflects the amount of enzymes in wheat. The enzymes produce food for yeast affecting the rise of bread. You can purchase different flour and test it then bake it to get a visual of the effects. For example bread flour will normally have an optimal falling number around 250 and normal self rising flour a good bit lower. When cut the more optimum bread flour will show more air pockets which is a result of the yeast producing more co2 being it had more food to eat in the bread. More info can be found in USDA FGIS website. And Perten which is the machines we use.

Efficiency of over 3% seems a little high. It's Xmax is different also. Says Xmax and coil over hang is 7mm but is less. Coil minus air gap is 8 I think it was / 2 gives it a coil overhang of 4

They may sound good but the specs contradict and it says it weighs 26 pounds. Your gonna have major door hinge problems with that much weight.

THE EPIC MAGNETAR THREAD

Sub has been built into an 18. The gap is way too large for this coil however I'm still sending it for Klippel testing to verify that the BL curve is even. Once Klippel testing is complete it'll be put in use to see if anything needs to be addressed. M As of now I will be... Adding cooling to the motor. This was supposed to be done already but it was overlooked by the factory. Found a little machining on the exterior of the motor to lose a little weight and help the flux path. Have a rubber motor boot made. Have custom terminal built that will allow the leads to fit better and allow 4 gauge wire. As long as the BL curve isn't crazy off. I don't see it being a problem to have the factory to start production by the end of next month. This will have them in and avaliable for end of August or beginning of September. -
I have spoke with him over the phone several times when I was looking for a competent supplier between my dealings with Wiggens and being pushed towards Pat Turnmire by Uta Klippel. Three parts suppliers that I deal with recommended his advise and services, so I wouldn't say he doesn't have a clue what he is doing. As far as his spiders there are only a few suppliers and I'm sure he uses the same stuff as most others use. Maybe there was a bad batch of resien on an order or something but it's HIGHLY unlikely The majority of his product has this issue or he wouldn't be in business as long as he has.

THE EPIC MAGNETAR THREAD

Induction should be slightly better with this coil. -
I'm getting all of my stuff together to place orders for product to be in for the holidays this year but I am still undecided on which route to go on a 1,000 watt sub line. I have two options that I have priced, one is an MMAG driver and the other is an overhung driver just like the Ethos. Either route taken will end up with basically the same t/s parameters but they are pros to both designs. MMAG Primo pros 1.) Will have smaller coil (power handling still the same) which leads to less moving mass increasing efficiency which in turn will make it a tad louder. 2.) The smaller coil make inductance lower in turn creates less distortion (however would more than likely be inaudible anyway) which in turn makes it a tad louder in upper frequencies. 3.) MMAG uses a "diode magnet" between the top plates that helps prevent flux modulation caused by the coil further lowing distortion. 4.) has a heat ring to further dissipate heat minimizing power compression 5.) heat ring also acts as a faraday ring. However Shorting rings outside the coil isn't TOO effective. (the coil is small enough no shorting rings will be used to lower driver cost) 6.) BL remains nearly constant through most of it's stroke even further reducing power compression. Unlike the overhung all of the coil remains saturated in flux throughout nearly all it's stroke. cons 1.) will be a little more expensive than the overhung driver OVERHUNG DRIVER pros 1.) price will be a little lower cons 1.) none really its just a normal overhung driver and doesn't have the advantages of the MMAG. Price. Primo will be somewhere around $280 plus shipping 15 Overhung will be around $240 plus shipping for 15 In case you don't know what the Primo looks like it's something like this.
