Thinking of switching sub setup..
Quentin Jarrell replied to riored4v's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
A 4 inch port is WAY too small you need a minimum of 30 square inches of port. With only 12.5 inches of port you are encountering major port compression. What you have now is basically a big leaky sealed box. The box needs to be 1.25 cft tuned to 32hz with a minimum of 30 inches of port. -

You will need two 10's with 22.9 mm of Xmax each to compress the same amount of air as one Ethos 12. Then you have to consider gain from the enclosures. -

The Ethos should be closer to 1.125 - 1.5 net ported. You will be hard pressed to find another sub or set of subs on the same power that sound as good and as loud in a box 1cft net sealed. -
Would you pay $450 for a 30 pound Ethos?

Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
Same exact everything else. Thermal would increase due to no heat soak. But that hasn't been an issue. Considering savings on shipping cost I think I'll still be able to get it as cheap or cheaper than the competition's ferrite counterparts in the same class. I'll still offer the ferrite version. It's just a pain in the ass to load 120 pounds of subs with a 75 pound box in the trunk of my car. -

And there is a waiting list of about 40 people right now for when the layaway starts on the next run. -

I might give it a try. The next order coming will be Ethos and Enchore(1,000 watt Ethos). So this would be a possibility for next summer. -

Drivers for this fall "start saving ur pennies"
Quentin Jarrell posted a topic in Direct Sound Solutions
Two new drivers coming this fall. 1) Trident. The first transducer ever brought to market with three gaps. With an Re or 1.6 and a BL of 20.75 it will be one of the stoutest 3 inch non neo driver on the market. Coupled with a moving mass about 25% less than the competition the efficiency rating will be fantastic. Plus due to the fact it is MMAG it will regain nearly all its BL all the way to 35mm one way xmax it will has less power compression that just about any driver on the market. 2) The Encore, aka the Ethos's little brother, 1,000 watt 20mm one way xmax. And I know everyone wanted the Primo to be available this fall. Well that's not gonna happen. After looking at the price to performance against the Encore I decided to scrap the original idea of the Primo. And make it a Neo driver. It will now be a 25mm xmax 1000 watt driver that will weigh somewhere around 15 pounds. I have samples of this driver on the way and if all is well it will be available the first of 2015. Estimated MAP will be around $350 for the 15 version. Below is a sketchup of all the motors together. The proprietary cooling on all of the motors have been deleted. All motors are to scale. The Trident is 11 inches OD and weighs about 80 pounds. The Primo on the right is about 4 inches OD and weighs about 8 pounds. -

Ethos and Trident preorder
Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
Which comes down the main advantage. It take more and more power to hit Xmax when your box gets smaller and smaller. So since you only need 70 percent power you can use a box roughly 70 percent smaller -
Ethos and Trident preorder
Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
The "type of sound" from the Trident will be similar to the Ethos. The FS, vas, and Qts are similar. However it will handle power differently. Most sub's Xmax is rated at 70% bl. Which means that for example if a sub has 10 mm of windings in the magnetic gap once it move enough so that 7 mm of windings are in the gap this is the the rated Xmax or the point of which distortion is audible by the motor. (Off topic but important. The general rule is that at 70% BL distortion is audible. But there is what's called masking effect. This means that the louder your system is the less we can perceive distortion ) The trident was purposely designed with a higher Xmax per BL than the sups pension and frame can handle. This wasn't to keep the SQ better but to keep sensitivity up in return taking less power to play the sub. For example if the Ethos and Trident were in the same series or level with all other parameters being the same it would take nearly 30 percent less power to reach 32mm Xmax on the trident versus the Ethos. -

You have my permission to post this for sale link on the DSS Facebook page if you like. I'm getting 4 or 5 people a day already wanting to pay for the next order arriving in March. I'm sure someone will scoop them up. -
unfortunately, I am completely out of ethos motors until March unless someone cancels a layaway. I do however have the Tridents coming along with this run of Ethos. The 15's are $533.95 and are about 2,800 watts rms.

Ethos and Trident preorder
Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
I had a customer dial back his order due to buying a different car. I have 4 available for sale. if interested go to the dss website and contact me for details. -
Orders are now closed for all Ethos drivers. Estimated time of arrival on the orders purchased through the preorder is scheduled in towards the end of October. We will update customers as we get more up to date information from our suppliers. We are working on getting all soft parts assembled so we will only have to drop in the soft parts once the motors arrive. This will minimize build time greatly. All pre-order sales are final. No refunds will be issued for pre-orders. The arrival time is an estimated timeframe only. The drivers could arrive earlier or later than expected. Due to unexpectedly high sales volume we have sold 90 percent of the Ethos motors ordered so we must hault sales until the next run of motors arrive which is expected to arrive sometime in February 2015. It is possible we may open a preorder on that run of motors during the Christmas holidays. In the upcoming days we will be introducing a 3inch coil driver that has a linear xmax throughout the usable mechanical xmech of our current soft parts (~40mm one way). Recommended RMS will be in the 2,500 watt range. This driver was developed with the help of Enrique Stilles of STEP Technologies and is the first transducer ever developed with three magnetic air gaps. Current estimated retail pricing will be $535.95 for the 15" and $555.95 for the 18" version. Pictures, T/S parameters, and Klippel results will be coming soon. Once introduced customer wanting to upgrade from the Ethos to the Trident will have the option to do so.

Ethos and Trident preorder
Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
Nope. I stay in the states. They do need to tighten up though. I have 100 speakers than need to ship to anxious customers. One good note though. I nearly have all soft parts ready to drop in once the motors arrive.
