Got two weeks of free time if anyone needs free help
Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
This is what I came up with. Maybe someone with more spl experience will chime in. Port on side facing forward. 11''x 5'' 36.41'' long tuned to 53 hertz (a lot smaller than I'd use but that's all that'll fit front volume: 1.224 cubic feet rear volume: .612 cubic feet -

Function of extra wire within harness?
Quentin Jarrell replied to Ndnkobra's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Correct, just cap it off so it doesn't accidentally touch anything. -
Function of extra wire within harness?
Quentin Jarrell replied to Ndnkobra's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
The factory plug illumination (red/black) is positive and is to be hooked to the positive illumination wire on the aftermarket harness. Older vehicles have both a illumination (+) and a dimmer (-) so you will find both in some aftermarket harnesses. If you ground out that illumination wire you will morethan likely blow the fuse connected to your dash lights. -
If that is for one 8" that port is a tad large. Using Small's minimum port formula you'll need apprx. 9.75 in^2 of port area. With a .6 ft^3 box that port will need to be 33" long.

An update on what's going on with our subwoofers
Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
Do you mean how is the quality of their design consulting? If so then, Patrick Red Rock's CEO, was personally recommended by Dr. Wolfgang Klippel (by email) to be the best qualified person in the industry to measure transducers and also had the newest set of toys from Klippel. Vance Dickason uses his FEA program SpeaD in his cookbook in the first chapters on transducer design and I quote Vance on page 13 of the 7th edition of the cookbook. "all the data and graphs (and some of the text) used for this tutorial were provided by Red Rock Acoustics and specifically by Red Rock's CEO, Pat Tirnmire, who happens to be one of those "hard to find" transducer designers. I would think it's hard to get that kind of recognition from Klippel and Dickason if you dont have a firm grasp on design. Plus the guy is top notch. He takes the time to help the little guy "me" when he normally deals with people like Sonovox who has a minimum on 1,000 units per driver order. -
*Swift's Rebuild* 3 SP4 18's, 12k Walled F250
Quentin Jarrell replied to swift's topic in Build Logs
Here's the model you asked for. The green is a classic super boom box. It gives you more bottom end but you just don't have enough room for it. I played around with several box sizes and tunings staying within your deminsions and I'd stick with the plan you had the PM's so you can adjust tuning as you play with the system. The red is the 19 cubic feet tuned to 31.5 hertz that was talked about in the PM's. -

Got three XBL motors I'm willing to get rid of

I've got three xbl motors I'd be willing to let go for $150 plus shipping. They are rated with an xmax of 24.5mm one way, and a BL of 15 with a dual two ohm coil. You can expect to run 500 watts rms thermally on the coils. The motors have an aluminum shorting ring outside the gap. Below is a pic of the BL curves. Disregaurd the compliances, the motors will be coned with beefier coned ans 12 spoked baskets similar to what everyone else uses. I can give calculated T/S parameters using SpeeD (indusrty standard FEA in loudspeaker design) This photo is what the motors look like. One is black, two are nickel finshed. -
I'm in the hospital but I got my old lady bringing my laptop and cookbook. Are there any parameters listed anywhere.

I would but I'm in the hospitail waiting on a neurologist and cardiologist. -
I would think two 15's IB in a trunk would just equal 1) a big leaky sealed box or 2) a big sealed box is sealed up properly.

You will want to get that brace 1.5 tines the width of the port away from the end of the port so it doesn't add to the port's length. -

Quentin Jarrell replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Direct Sound Solutions
Yea, I had plans for several but when it came down to production they acted like they didn't want to take any money. So I contacted Klippel and asked for their recommendation for designers here in the states. That led me to Patrick Turnmire (created Orion's loudspeaker department And developed Orion's first products in the 90's and developed SpeaD, the program used in the Loudspeaker Cookbook), he is partners with Enrique Stiles ( designed cv Strokers, VP of Engineering at ADS Technologies, was chief of Engineering at Pioneer Speakers, manager of Speaker Engineering at Orion, has designed speakers for Altec Lansing, McIntosh, Boston Acoustics, Fishman, and Artisan), and they are partners with Vance Dickason whom needs no introduction. So it's taken a little longer than expected but I've gathered the know how, the experience, and the tools to come up with some great product. After I get the DSS (Direct Sound Solutions) product running I will be getting into the MMAG (multiple magnetic air gap) product that will concentrate on sound quality product and ultra high excursion subwoofers. -
