Can Fiberglass Resin Fumes Damage Sub?
Quentin Jarrell replied to handman84's topic in General Audio
You'll get used to it. But it'll soak into the car interior and new passengers will smell it for weeks. -
I'm betting there is a short between the seat and steering wheel

1.34 ohms? I have never seen a sub with an impedance 1.34 -
All the ships I am on are anchored mid river or docked at an elevator but dealing with the massive amounts of weight we do, when shit goes wrong it' snot a pretty sight. There is a lot of traffic here and the river moves about 10 miles per hour when it's up. In the past five years I've seen three dead bodies pulled out of the river and helped pull two live people out of the river that has fallen off floating cranes. I've seen a floating crane fall of it's turntable, and saw a longshoreman get decapitated by a moring line.

It was definantly an oh shit moment as there was literally to where to run to. They had one a few years back hit the concrete board walk in New Orleans (actually about two miles down river from where I was at) and fuck up lie 200 feet of the board walk. This was after the ship dropped both anchors.

Had a nice GoPro moment earlier this morning. A 850 foot long loaded oil tanker came within about 50 feet from slamming into the birthed Panamax I was on. I was checking the hold on the ship when I started hearing the ship's horn going off. I stood there for a minute or two looking trying to figure out what the hell was going on then one of the ship's crew said to run the tanker coming down th eriver lost rudder control. Luckily the elevator I was at has two births and the other vessel there was complete and there were harbor tugs right there waiting to pull that vessel off. If they were not there the tanker would have slammed into my vessel. Sinking it and more than likely killing me, the crew aboard the ship I was on and the people on the dock. The tanker was loaded so it was more than likely around 90,000 metric tons moving about 13 MPH.

I can only assume their stuff isn't used in car audio is due to copyright fees. I'm like you it seems like a no brainer. Then again MMAG is a no brainer when it comes to high xmax linear motors. Besides the older Storkers I can't recall any car audio companies besides the UL that used it. It is used by a handfull of high end pro audio companies. Just like David Hyre's XBL, I guess the bean counters can't justify the fees or most engineers are just dubious to the technology. -
unhook one of the rca's (left OR right) and see if it's louder
-
If you used a pac adapter and tapped into the canbus wires then you turned a 2 volt signal into a .2 volt signal. That's why it's not loud. And asuming you don't have it out of phase. The PAC guy either didn't understand you or he is full of shit. If you have the polarity of the left and right channel out of phase they will null the signal.

To be honest with you I never really put much thought into the technology. I mean who really thinks of a shallow mount sub as something they really want to use. I knew about it (this is an Enrique Stilles / STEP patented technology) just never played around with it. Until last week when the ole lady told me she wanted to add a bit more bottom end in her car (she's deaf although she has a cochlear implant) she likes a bit more bass than normal for normal listening. But she didn't want to lose any trunk space. So I went back to the plethora of info I've gathered from Enrique and Pat. Started doing a little FEA modeling and found out holy shit I can get 30mm xmax under a truck seat. -

Save a few more bucks and go to Sears and get the largest physical sized MARINE platinum battery that will fit in your factory location. When you factor in shipping and any problems that might arise causing you to have to exchange a battery, and warrantee there batteries can't be beat. Just make sure it is a MARINE battery. It is there deep cycle batteries and they look exactly like the other platinum batteries however they have a "M" in their model numbers. And if they ask tell them the battery is going in a boat so they don't give you any shit about it being used in a "system" -

Since the question came up I took a few moments to come up with a quick "what if" for a 8 inch sub or mid bass. Motor height is pretty much on spec however the cone and spiders are just guestimates. All spider, edge, and body components would be designed with FineCone. Total Od would be 8.5 inches. There are mounting flanges in the sketchup making it more than 8.5 however if I was to make a custom driver like this it would be a over sized Sd tabbed frame. This unit's motor was designed with a 2 inch 8 layer coil. The spiders would be inverted to make help make the suspension more linear. Xmax 15mm one way Xmech 24mm one way Sd (after subtracting motor area) 41 In^2 total driver height 65 mm mounting depth 50.5 mm -
As much time that u have check and quadruple checked shipping quotes you could have already paid for that extra shipping.

That is total working room with cone in its out most position. Not including box bottom thickness. Remove the motor from a standard 12 sub with a 12 spoke basket and that's what you will be working with. -
If made correctly it should be the same. There is a reason why it's larger than copper.

Exactly. Just no outside motor structure around the coil. -

The gap should not fluctuate anymore than a standard design does. The two neo magnets in the pics above and below the "gap plate" are magnetized at 90 degrees from the "gap plate". This should keep any modulation to a minimum. Faraday rings do help when used properly. But they can make a motor nonlinear as well. for example when a large pole cap is used without any use of rings in the motor. For cost and R&D purposes there will be a 5mm thick aluminum plate bolted to the bottom of the basket. The motor will then be epoxied onto this plate and secured with a center bolt into the bottom plate of the motor. The spider and body/edge will be fastened to the basket as normal. The coil and former will be inverted so as the coil will be above the body with little clearance as possible. The coil is large enough for the expected Pmax I don't foresee any thermal issues from the coil not being force cooled like normal. After a few production runs if there is enough demand I will have custom bodies built to transfer the coil under the body. However I would still expect it to remain without a dust cap due to the xmax. I like to keep the xmech 60% more than the xmax to prevent hard bottoming out. So if I went with a fully capped body it would add ~2" to the overall height to insure the cap didn't strike the top of the motor. As long as the manufacturing cost is reasonable it is possible to have a production run in 6-7 months as long as the factory doesn't drag their feet on the sample. -
I've put a RF T1 12 ported under a seat of a chevy. And I've put (4) 12" JL W6's sealed in proper air space under the back seat of a 4 door dodge ram. It just takes a little ingenuity.

Don't need to. The coil is tiny in comparision to ordinary subs. 22mm versus 60-70 mm on subs with similar xmax. And the coil is not encased in steel as in traditional motors. -

I spent the last 12 hours or so tweaking the current motor to get the most stoke as possible while retaining enough motor force for the moving mass. I want to stay at 120 mm in total length this will keep the motor under the working depth of a 12inch 12 spoked basket with a traditional cone/surround. in the above pics the colors are: copper is the coil middle silver is the gap plate dark gray is Neo magnet outside silver are top and bottom plates Imagine this sitting inside a basket just as a pole piece would. In this case the pole piece is the entire motor. No other surrounding magnets or plates are required except for a thin aluminum plate which will attach the motor to the frame. calculating the B field which is a total of ~70mm we can expect a xmax per 70% BL at ~30.6 mm one way. A 12inch basket using this motor, this driver should work in 5.25 inches of total depth (not including enclosure rear material thickness). Meaning the cone should not hit as long as you have 5.25 inches of clearance between the inside of the bottom of your box and the bottom of a rear truck seat. -
If you want to save yourself some cash return the resin and mat. It's not needed. If your cuts are nice and straight all you need to do is run a small bead of wood glue on the inside of the seams. If not then run a small bead of caulk.

not for this motor. It's too tall about ,4.75 inches, to be a reasonable shallow driver. There are less expensive routes to go for 8''s -
