I had the same problem with the Xtant amps I was using. It switched them from unbalanced to balanced (even though I am running unbalanced) and it went away. Not sure if that will help, but I thought I would throw that out.

I have also seen minimal expanding foam. It does not get as wild as the normal stuff.

I use expanding foam in my ride. You can get Great Stuff at Home Depot for like $5.00

My truck has a 5" plastic thingy on it. It looked as though someone drilled a hole through it for another wire (not there anymore), so I just used that. That was about the only easy thing in the install of this damn system. I would also use the top one. My 96 Accord was set up that same way.

For something that old, you are better off running new wires. As far as installing the HU, if you don't mind cutting the dash a little, you could weld something up to give the HU something to mount in.
