  1. I know some of you would prefer to put a JL w6v2 in a sealed box... (I'd like to go that rout if I had two subs and a powerful enough amp to push them both), but since I just have a single sub and amp I want to build a ported box. I want to make the box wedge shape so I can get the most out of my trunk. I did design a box using a 4in round port, specs: Sub is a single 12" JL audio w6v2 3/4" mdf box external lengths: height= 14.75in width= 26.0in bottom depth= 13.5in Top depth= 8.25 in 4in port, tuned to 32hz Net volume, 1.5 cu. ft. Final internal volume after adding in sub and port displacement ~1.76 cuft. I've been hearing from alot of people that I should make a slot port instead. I would have done this straight from the get go, but I've been having trouble figuring out a slotport to work with my wedge design. If any of you can help me figure out out that would be great! Then I can go back and alter to design to accomodate the port. Thanks much.
  2. Well thank you for the reply. I have used a program like that before. The only problem I came up with is the fact that you can angle the same side as the port opening, but not the opposite side. On my design, the back is going to be angled, and the front where the port opening is will be straight up and down.

Building an enclosure for my JL w6v2...

Haha I would normaly do something like that, but money is tight at the moment sooo I guess gota work with what I have to make a choice then spend the money and build one good box. See I do have a ported box (actually borrowing it from my friend) It is another prefab- subzone to be exact. It can be a little boomy at times, but I realy enjoy the ouput when listening to rap/hiphop and electronica music. I would like to kind of compare that to the sealed box I have. I know it may not be the best way to do things... but if figure if I like one over the other then I can put the effort and money to building a nice box.
  4. I have two 12" JL w6v2 subs. I dont have an amp powerfull enough to power them anymore, so I'm going to run with a single sub for a while. I'm want to build a new enclosure for it... it will either be a sono tube or a fiberglass enclosure. I'm just wondering what some of you JL owners are running a single w6v2 in?? I know JL has some specs on their site for "suggested" enclosures. I've made their slot port before... but I sold it when I upgraded to two subs... and to be honest, I dont think its the best it could have been. I would like to go ported, will most likely used a round port. What are specs you guys using for your jl?? Any and all help is needed. I certainly dont want to by a prefab ha. Thanks!

Building an enclosure for my JL w6v2...

Hmm.. alright. Well I have a crappy dual prefab sealed box that I might used to test out if I would like my sub sealed. Its probably around 1.5cuft airspace.. soo If I sealed up the second whole I will get an idea. I've always liked ported... so just not sure If I'd like it sealed ya kno.

Building an enclosure for my JL w6v2...

Power is about 400 right now, but im going to get a 5-600 watt amp soon. What airspace is best sealed?
  7. Yeah, I just want to do the best with what I have. I'm a college student and couldnt afford to change. Even if I did though, I duno if I would change, I love my JL's and got them at a great price.
  8. Well I'm trying to plan a fiberglass build for my twin 12" jl w6v2's that will be going in my WRX (sedan). I've asked around to get suggestions on how to go about the design, but noone seems to be able to help me with my question?? I know with a regular box your kind of limited to either just facing your subs straight back or straight foward... straight back, pushed up against the backseat usualy being "as good as your going to get" as far as cabain gain goes. What I've been trying to find out is, since sub orientation is just about limitless with fiberglass, what orientation will yield me the best possible cabin gain and sound in my trunk? Like facing the subs toward the rear, angled towards each other? Angled away from each other? Mounted parallel on each side of my trunk, facing each other? Facing away from each other? Or anything else? Any and all suggestions would be great! Not only do I want the enclosure to look good, but I definately want it to sound good too! Thanks.
  9. Well, I finished my sono tube, now its on to another more challenging fiberglass build. This time around I'm going with two 10's and I am giving my self a budget of $250 for subs, and $250-300 for an amp. I'm looking for a pair of subs that will give me great spl, with some sq as well. I listen to a variety of music from rap, hiphop, to rock, country, and even jazz etc. They will be ported, and I'm thinking roughly around 1cft each sub (not decided yet). I would like them to be pretty efficient too. I'm not interested in the walmart variety... nor competition worthy subs. Just plenty to satisfy me on a daliy basis, yet when I would like to impress a friend or two, make them smile with a GREAT backrub. Soo pretty much any suggestion of subs that you have heard and would recomend based on my preferences, would be great! And just to show what I'm thinking of doing, heres a sketch of my next project:

The best pair of 10's for $250?

Would $300 be a little more realistic? I probably could do that... I would have to cut into my enclosure budget... nothing I couldnt replace though over a little time saving...

The best pair of 10's for $250?

Humm... well to be honest I would like some more suggestions. Those subs look very nice, but I would like to try and get as many suggestions as I can so I can narrow it down. Anyone have more suggestions? If it helps to broaden suggestions, maybe I can say mention a different amp if it wont work with what the ones I gave to choose from?? Humm...

The best pair of 10's for $250?

How do those sound? What can you compare them to?
  13. Just kinda throwing this out there...but for christmas my family is doing a secrete santa deal... with the rules being for the person you pick, you buy them one or multiple gifts that add up to one hundred dollars. I got my older brother this year... and one of the things on his list was a home stereo amplifer for surround sound. Car audio is more my thing, but home stereo stuff... I have nooo clue. Is there anything somewhat decent that I could get him for like $100 or less? If not, he has plenty of other things on his list. Thanks to all who can help me, and an early merry christmas to all!!
  14. Those look hott haha. I wish I could buy them, but with christmas and all coming up, I probably wouldnt be able to afford them. I will definately keep them in mind tho.
  15. Alrighty soo I'm looking to finaly get my own amp for my beastly little sub, the oem tc10 from tc sounds. Its a dual 4ohm sub. RMS power is 800 watts but is said to be able to take alot more power than that with a smile. Right now shes being powered by a RF amp that I'm borrowing from my buddy. I guess its rated at like 750watts. It works, but with the power turned all the way up, my sub is beggin for more. I'm not looking to break my bank, but I'm definately not looking for something walmart would cary either. I dont know much about what are good amps now adays, but a couple I've been looking at are the PG RSD1200.1 and the alpine mrd-m1005. What are some other options I could do? I would like my price range to be like 300 or less.
  16. I'm using a RF 1000BD I believe. Its not mine though, so is one of the main reasons I need my own amp. My buddy says the birth sheet rates it at like 750watts or so..
  17. Thank you for your suggestion. Looks like a great amp, but unfortunately a little outa my price range...
  18. Well I dont mean the gain is all the way up... just the bass knob. But unless thee is something wrong with my amp... when I have it "all the way up, the sub bumps, but dosnt seem like its being pushed to its potential. And that goes the same for when I turn the gain up more too.
  19. Alrighty soo I've been wanting to do my own custom install for a while now. I wanted to acheive a more compact design- one that didnt take up much trunk space, was easy to remove if needed and that was still loud enough and cool looking to not only make me happy, but impress my friends too. Thus came the idea of the sono tube! With the design concept settled, I started looking for the perfect sub to make all the magic happen. I wanted something beefy, but in a 10". After some research, I ended up going with tcsounds oem tc10 and their matchin passive radiator (which might I add is one sexy little thing!!). http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/attachment...uild-d-cone.jpg http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/attachment...uild-d-side.jpg http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/attachment...d-d-passive.jpg The first two pictures are what my sub looks like from the factory pics, and the others are of my tube. Construction on my tube is finished, but the rack I made still isnt glued, and the rest of the install is still in creative thought... Soo far what I'm thining of doing is sliding the tube as far over to the right sideas I can. I'm going to mount the "unfinished" rack you see in the picture to the plywood floor. The tube is going to be removeable soo I need to try and come up with some sort of claspe system to hold my tube in place on the rack (thats one thing I need ideas on..) Then what I was thinking to do was mount my amp and cap below the floorboard, with plexyglass top, flush to the floor itself... If any of you have any ideas/comments on what I've come up with so far, please feel free to help! Thanks!

Finaly made my custom sono tube!

Hey thanks much! For a while I was almost thinking I wasted time and money on this tube for it to not even work how I originally wanted, but that definately makes it worth while. Yeah I'm thinking about making a different rack. The one I have is just made out of 1/2in MDF.. so its not too sturdy. I might make it out of different type of wood, or go with 3/4in mdf, then try and fiberglass around to make its lines flow nicely and give it that stock look. As for something to strap it down, I bought two 4ft long strips of 1/8in thick, 1in wide strips of aluminum. I'm not sure how I'm going to use them in the design, but I figured they look nice, and are thick enough to add secuirty I'm lookin for. I kinda like your idea of attatching the tube to the rack perminately though... I could still make it strong, but at the same time lightweight with the fiberglass, then figure out a way to be able to lock that down, and make it removeable when I need. Its either that, or bolt that down, and figure some sort of system for my aluminum strips.

Finaly made my custom sono tube!

Soo today I finaly got some time to mess around in my trunk to see what all I could start on. I took my tube out and the stockfloor board and quickly realized my idea wasn't going to work. For some reason I thought there was going to be alot more room in between the wheel and where the floor is going to be so I could do my floor amp rack and keep my spair... but once I got in there and looked at it again there was barely any room at all. A little disapointing, but I played around with different placements of the tube and think I finaly figured out something different that gives me room in my trunk, allows me to access my spair and gives me a place to put my amp. Where the tube is now, I have both the sub and passive cornerloading. You cant see the cone of my sub very well in this position... but I figure ah well it sounds best like this. For my amp I'm going to see if I can fabricate some sort of vertical rack for it... probably right where it's at in the pic. I will have everything mounted to a new floorboard, and I might even rig up a trap door to get to my spair. Heres some pics of my arrangement... Again, this is all in creative thought still... I want the setup to look nice, yet still be lowkey and stock looking. Any ideas/comments are always welcome!

Finaly made my custom sono tube!

I can try and do somethin video wise... but I will have to use a different computer because I cant hook my camcorder to mine. Do any of you guys have any creative ideas on how I can do a "strap system" for my tube?? This is the last puzzle I need to work out before I start to work on my instal. Any ideas on what I can do?

Finaly made my custom sono tube!

Ohh yes I definately will. Its all just kinda ghetto back there for the time being but thats just because I couldnt wait till the whole install was complete to listen to my handy work haha. When its all done, all the wires will be hidden. Yup... thats it. My passive is tcsounds like my sub. It has the same cone as my sub so they match . On the passive, theres a center plastic bolt that you add washers on to tune it. Techs from tcsounds (or I guess audiopulse now..) said without any weight they are tuned like maybe 30-35htz.... soo all I have on my passive is just the big nut it comes with. Soo far its sounding REAL nice! I cant really get techical with the terminolgy... but pretty much I'm getting the best of both worlds of ported and sealed. Like it sounds sealed, but hits like its ported without any sort of portnoise. The bass is very clean sounding and crisp, but gets pretty damn low! It sounds great for anything from rap, to rock, to jazz to country. I'm VERY happy with how it sounds! And from what I understand, the amp I'm using is only pushing out like 750 watts... there are other people who are pushing 1500 to their tc10s with no problem... soo it can only get better!

    Looking for larg round tubing

I'd definately say sono tube and maybe a couple layers of fiberglass to help sturdy it up. Its easy to make and cheap too. I just finished a sono tube for my oem tc10. It turned out real nice. I'm not completely done with my install yet, but I going to post a couple pics what I have so far in a different thread.
