    ported box

I am toying with the idea of putting 2 12" SSDs in a ported box. My original plan was to seal them, but I don't know what kind of output I would get. Could someone help me design a ported box for these subs? I am totally new to ported boxes so I don't know where to start. I'd like to maintain as much SQ as possible and gain as much output as possible. Dimension wise, my trunk could accomodate a box 39" across and 17" high. Depth is negotiable, depending on the size of box needed. Thanks in advance for the help.
  2. Where do you guys get your wiring from? I was thinking of getting my RCAs from KnuKnoceptz (Krystal series). I've read about getting power wire from WeldingSupply.com. But this is from posts from a year or more ago. Just curious where everyone else goes.

    SSD wiring

What size wire do the SSD terminals accept? 8ga? 10ga? What's recommended?

    Which would you do?

I have been leaning towards the 2 SSD 12s recently because I am a big fan of 2 sub setups. Now I just have see if I can get my hands on a SAZ-1500D for a good price.

    box tuning

So I am thinking of venturing into unknown territory and build my first ported box. I have been doing a little research but am still learning. As I understand it, frequencies below the tuning of the box can cause the driver to "unload" which can cause damage. I am not 100% sure what that means, but I digress. I have read more than a few threads that say they tuned their box to 32 Hz and then go on to say that the low-end is amazing. Now I listen to mostly rap music, and it seems like to me that there are a lot of songs with frequencies below 32 Hz. There are a couple low notes in Jeezy's "Hypnotize" for example that I am guessing dip below 32 Hz. How is it that the box can still safely play these notes, and better still have them sound amazing? Am I missing something? Does it have to do with the subsonic filter keeping the driver from unloading, and yet still being able to reproduce these frequencies without the cone ripping from the surround? Or am I completely off and I just am confusing what certain frequencies sound like?
  7. So I think I have decided on getting a Q for the new system - either a sealed 15 or a ported 12. I am looking for something to power it now. Really what I wanted to do was a Sundown SAZ-1500D for the sub and a 100.2 for the front stage. However, now were talking around 220 amps to run off my 130 amp alternator. This is just a daily driver so if I can get away with it, I don't really want to get an HO alt. So I am open to suggestions on amps to get? You think I could get away with those two amps without an HO alt? Or should I be realistic and tone it down a bit?

    current draws

What kind of current draws can I expect from the 1500D and the 100.2? I see that the combined fuse rating is 220 amps, but I assume this is under extreme situations. I have been considering incorporating both in my new system, but I only have a 130 amp alt. I really don't want to replace it if I can get away with it. The 1500D would be powering a Q 15 more than likely. Does anybody have any experience running this sub/amp combo? How about the same sub with a 1000D?

    current draws

As of right now, I only plan on running this system for music only. I think I could get away with the 1500D on the Q with my electrical because I would never run it fill tilt, or at least not constantly. My concern is when I add in the second amp, thats where I will run into more trouble. I guess I should at least give the 1000D some real thought. Really I just want this system to sound real clean for everyday listening, but be able to get super loud for show off sessions or just to fill my summer time bass cravings. Thanks for the help guys.

    whats up guys

I've made a few posts on this board before but I thought I should check in here. I am still a noob to the car audio scene, but I am learning more every day. Now that I am out of college and got myself a new car, I am putting together my new system, so I will be on the board quite frequently in the next month or more. Thanks to all the guys who have helped me already and to those who will help me in the future.

    Sealed 15"

I apologize in advance - you are dealing with a noob. I think I want to do a sealed 15" in my new car, but I am having trouble deciding which way to go. I have been looking at the Fi Q and the SI Mag. Is the SI really worth the extra 200? Would you recommend anything else? Perhaps maybe even a 12" to go ported with? I am not looking to make major alterations to my electrical just yet either (read HO alt), so I'd like to keep the power handling in the 1000W range. I'm looking for a true LSQ system - I want it to be clean, but get LOUD when I want it. I have about 3 cubes to work with, maybe more if I want to give up some of that golf bag space in the trunk, but I'd like to keep it if I can help it. If it means a real difference in loudness, I might consider giving up some more. Thanks for the help guys, Chris

    help me decide

So I am trying to decide between either a Q or a BL. I will be picking up either a 12 or a 15, depending on what kind of car I finally decide to get (is it sad that size of the trunk to fit a bigger box is actually a big factor in my decision?). So I am looking for something clean, but powerful. I listen mostly to rap, but I like to mix it up with some rock every now and again. One of the big problems I have with my current setup is that my subs can't seem to keep up with a quick bass line. So I am looking for something quick, yet powerful enough to feed my need. Now I understand the BL will get louder than the Q but at the loss of SQ. How much of a loss are we talking about? Can anyone explain the major differences I will encounter with the two? Finally, as far as amps go, I was thinking about jumping in on that SAE-1000D preorder. How important is it to have some overhead on your amplifier. Am I really going to notice a difference feeding these subs 1000W from the SAE-1000D versus giving it 1200W from another amp? Sorry for the newb questions... just trying to get my feet wet with some of this stuff. Thanks guys.

    help me decide

I don't have anything against the SAE-1000D. Actually, when I saw it I thought that it would probably be perfect. Good product, good company, good price. My concern was that maybe I wouldn't be giving these subs all the power that they could handle. I'm not one to leave resources untapped. I'm also very hesitant about purchases like this because I want to make sure I have researched all my possible options before committing to something.

    help me decide

What do you consider a well-built enclosure? I was thinking of getting an SUV, so I was thinking of putting a 15 in a 4.0 ft^3 box tuned to 30 Hz or so in a sub up, port back kind of configuration. I am very new to building ported boxes - I've always built sealed ones but I wanted to try something different this time around since I will have some space to do it. Can anyone recommend me a couple amps to power one of these things other than the SAE-1000D? Something in the $300 range?
