I used bass boost and didnt have a problem. What I did was set my amp's gain with the bassboost up all the way so that the 1000wrms was the max it would see and not send a choppy signal. I had the bassboost down for driving and up for comps.

First off, I could NOT be happier. Alot of bang for the buck, and that's what I needed from this sub. It sounds excelent, especially for being in a box thats 11.6 cubes. I set the amp to send the sub the full 1000 watts when the bass boost is all the way up. When I listen to music, I have the boost all the way down cause its still loud, but sounds perfectly in tune with the mids and highs. Whenever I get bored is when I crank it up, but personally my ears dont like the pressure all too much. This enclosure was intended for music with the tuning at 28-30 hz, and I never planned on competing, although I went to a db drag on the 15th. I entered and qualified with a 138, quite the ugly score, but I was using the db jam cd that you can borrow from the judges. I played some stupid track I was told to, it didn't work out well. So first round comes along, I hit 145.2 with jeezy on my own cd because I knew it would play properly. The track was hypnotize, and it hit 145.2 at 39 hz. I am thrilled with that for my first try! I can add more once I shrink the volume of the box a bit, I could also comment on the higher tuning before I lengthen the port. NUMBERS: -145.2 db with music on the TL -1000 watts rms (lanzar opti1400D) -11.6 cube box -tuned to 28-30hz -125 square inches of port (flared out to almost 200) -18" of Fi "Q"uality PICS ok so photos are in order from the begining of the build to the final product, with some sub shots at the end!! mounts for dancefloor dancefloor sides of the box I like to call this the "frame method" to building walls compared to a 12" type-R again with the R, in the cutout for the Q18 Test fitting for the next couple pics (I'm poor, I didnt have saw horses at this point) All framed in nice and neat Q in the wall for the first time! (looks off center but my seats are just adjusted differently) And so fiberglassing begins After a long time came bondo and paint (although I got lazy with the bondo, it still looks sweet as heck) Now for sexy subwoofer poses!

I used the website parts express to build some dayton audio towers, I bought a sub amp there too.

Ok currently im using a Fi Q18 in an 8 cubic foot box tuned to 19 hz powered by a dayton 1000watt amp, I used the RE box designer program on their website and i dont think it worked out right because my bass peaks really high, maybe around 60hz. Im looking for help from the home audio geniuses here because im not sure how to make this work out for me i listen to everything but mainly hip hop. it will seldomly be used for movies. and im building dayton 8s right now. im looking for good musical response and excursion. the room will be about 20x30 any designs or ideas are much appreciated

thanks! sounds good guys i dont really understand the crossover on the amp, its an HPSA-1000R by dayton audio it has six knobs, the left 3 are highlighted under "EQ" and they are Freq (18-80), Bandwidth (0.1-1), and Level (-14.5 to +6). then the right 3 knobs are Phase(0-180), Freq(30-200), and then Gain(0-10) i moved the box around the room and it sounds much better. but im not sure about the crossover on the amp, audibly the frequency knobs make no difference. so i must be doing something wrong

the sub is standing up tall, with the port on the bottom of the front baffle
-
its 49" tall, 23" wide, 20"deep. the top and bottom are both 1.5" thick. Port is 21.5"x3.5"x51.75". theres 3 window frame shaped braces inside the room i have it in right now is about 12'x10', would this affect it?

To me, it appears as if the woofers are on a separate circuit than the tweeters. I know they're connected somehow and I've studied the build log pictures of the crossovers, but I dont understand this calsod crossover design. If anybody could help that would be great thanks.
-
yea that helps, i wasnt sure if i was going to have to connect them in series or parallel thanks a whole bunch
-
with the dayton 8s, it shows the woofers and the tweeters on different circuits? will i need to run these in series or parallel?
-
i would like 3000 ferrite magnets, a large blue foam mat, and a cop car please haha
-
yea i know but they're fairly close to the border, that may be why. Im building the sub today, Fi Q 18 in a 8 cube box, tuned to 20hz, hopefully low enough

Theres a mad deal at partsexpress.com today. The dayton 1000wrms amp for 250 bucks. merry christmas to me!! and everybody else. oh happy holidays

I basically need a receiver with a sub pre out and has to be a decent quality unit. Is this the one for me? Im running a 2.1 setup with some dayton 8s and a Fi Q18 powered by a dayton 1000w free standing amp.

New to Home Audio, looking for some opinions and ideas for a first set

It's been resolved, I called back and suggested putting the resistor in a bubble wrap envelope and they said they could do it up for free so that is just all fine and dandy! THANKS EVERYONE if it wasnt for you and this site I'd have bought some el cheapo best buy towers -

Hey hows everybody doin? well I moved out and next year once im out of residence my parents decided they would give me the 7 year old 56" projection tv plus all the lazy boys in the house. I thought it would be genius to have a decent (awesome sounding first setup) setup. So what i have planned is mostly coming from partsexpress. The towers will be a MTM setup with 2 8" Dayton references (4ohm) and a Vifa D27TG-05 1" silk dome tweeter (8ohm). The crossovers are going to be the dayton 2 ways crossed over at 2kHz. The problems im having since im new to this is what should i set the crossover point to, i dont know how to build one so i have an option of 2 - 4.5kHz in 500Hz increments. And i dont know what volume i should build the enclosure to. I believe i should do a sealed enclosure for my first home audio setup I plan on using the Pioneer 5.1 Channel A/V Receiver (VSX-517-K) because i am on somewhat of a budget and it appears to have everything i would need. for the substage which will come later, i plan on taking the Fi Q18 out of my automobile and putting it in a 7.5 cube box tuned to 26Hz powered by the Dayton 1000watt rack mount amp. I think i covered everything, any ideas/suggestions are welcome!!! Thanks -

Ok thats perfect, I wasn't to sure on the impedence of the entire speaker though. aha and you might laugh at this crap that just happened, because I live in Canada, it would cost 35 bucks to ship the $1.25 resistor so they just credited me and now I can only build one speaker... sweet! So unless radioshack or whom ever has one of these, I'm going to be buying the most price inflated resistor ever! -

Can I just power the Dayton 8s with a receiver? What kind of receiver could I get for about 500 that would power the dayton 8s well and work well with the Dayton sub amp? -

I bought all the componants to make the Dayton 8s linked above but one of the 20 ohm 10 watt resistors is chipped and the core is visable for about 1/4". Will this hurt the crossover or not? -
i live in ontario and i got it today!!! 2 days shipping

i got me one of em

is there a difference between freestanding and plate amps that i should know about?

basically i think i could get away with a decent setup for 1000 bucks. thats for everything except the sub. is it possible? because i would really like to use an active crossover setup, but i never even used one of those in my car. I know how to set it up in a car but home audio kind of intimidates me. the reason i think active would be better for me is because i know im going to have another home audio project soon enough and not having to build crossovers for both setups would be pretty sweet. I dont know what equiptment i would need though. so let me know if $1000 is good enough for everything excluding the sub. oh and the amp i have planned is $330 (dayton 1000wrms). so i guess is $670 enough? -edit- the amp is on for 250 bucks today only so im about to buy it, and that makes my budget 750 now! -

Its going to be mostly used for home audio and not HT so I think JimJ's idea on better amplification sounds pretty good paired with the idea that i want to go 2.1 I'd like to learn how to build my own Xovers for sure so if thats what i have to do, then i can do it but i dont think im going to be buying any pricey measurement equiptment, i do have several quality DMMs at my house though what would be my best bet for the 2.1 setup, would i still use the pioneer receiver and then just amp the signal to the towers? and any good resources for crossover design would be useful Thanks
