looks like cathay(peanut) birch to me...

im wanting to use one of my maw-15s in a ht application. I figured that the bash-300 off mach5's website would power it quite well and be very nice in a 2cuft stuffed box. however there is no way for me to run the maw at 4ohms is there? its only 2 and 8 with dvc?
-
hmm, interesting, so more or less exactly the same as what i would be running sub wise. How does it sound? i would imagine it gets pretty loud:p but how is it for movies and whatnot? only other subs ive run in a HT application are computer speakers, like the logitech z680s(10" sub) and my current edifier 5.1s (8" sub w/ 90watt amp), which i will be hooking the maw up to until i get a proper receiver and towers and whatnot.
-
yea, box will be more like 2.5ft stuffed. i just want to make sure the bass is really tight and punchy...so how much does the bash300 put out at 8ohm? im assuming its not 2ohm stable

you just get it at your local plywood store...they come in big bags...its just pink or yellow insulation...nothing exciting

lol, i should make this a worklog.... but the rattling was bugging me, so i set about to eliminate it from the trunk...heres what i did ok, so first i took off the plastic on the top of the hatch, allowing me to get at the screws holding the spoiler down...its funny because i thought the hydraulic arms on the trunk were shot cuz the hatch wouldnt stay up...but when i took the spoiler off it stayed up on its own, as you can see then i took off the spoiler... and a bit of dirt under where it was, but not too much, and no rust, just like the rest of the car and now that its all off i set about to clean all the crap up soapy water and a soft brush action shot, all that dusty crap is just pollen a nice soft cloth to dry it all better so after that i used some weatherstripping tape on all the spots where the spoiler touches the trunk...i was so into it i forgot to take pictures... haha. spoiler slid on and screwed in nice and snug. After that i figured i might as well try to deaden the hatch abit more, so i stuffed all the exposed metal with household insulation, just as i did yesterday with the subbox, which i guess i should have mentioned before, . Then i put the plastic back in and tested it all out. It sounds significantly better, much less rattling and more bass from the hatch...however now i can hear all the other ratting that i couldn't even hear before, so ill have to go about eliminating all those. But i definitely recommend this little project to anyone with a rattly hatched car...only expense was like 2 bucks for the weatherstripping, i just took the insulation from what we had leftover from building our house. oh, the music wasnt actually distorting inside the car, thats just the mic on the cam cuz it was so freaking loud...didnt have it up all the way in this video as when i do the speakers distort (really need to get them amped to keep up with the subs) so the subs actually weren't going at full excursion or anything, but i think it still shows the difference in the rattling from the last clip http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/meista...=Movie_0001.flv

after much frustration, a blown amp, and unnecessary investments...my system is finally working...it consists of 2 maw 15s running off a viper 1200.1d, some nextar canadian tire deck, cerwin vega components, infinity rears(now blown, heheh)....i am amazed with it...with a very conservative gain setting, no bass boost or equalization it absolutely pounds, and blends fairly well with the speakers...ive heard alot of bad things about 15 inch subs being muddy and undefinined...but hot damn the maws sound sharp, just as crisp and punchy as a pair of 10s imo...i have yet to actually listen to the system at its full potential, as i blew the rear speakers and im going to put new ones in before i crank it all the way again..but yeah they are very nice speakers, i think i might take one out and build a new box for just 1 15 as that would probably be more than enough for me
-
fwd turbo....almost as cool
-
haha...i just grabbed my dogs little stuffed animal, it was the only one i could find....however i really need to get the trunk fixed, it rattles so bad its nasty...its mostly the spoiler i think, but i dont know how to fix it
-
ok, heres a better video of the subs at full excursion, they are only gettin about 4-500 watts cuz the gains are set pretty conservatively and the amps only on an 80amp fuse...but damn they are loud http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y5/meista...talonbumpin.flv

lol, its okay jeremiah...it took me forever to get my current system...i was so critical of every driver i considered...then i just bit the bullet and did something completely out of character, i went with a company noone had heard of, and now i have a loudass car that never ceases to impress if i was you, id just get the mj18, put it in the biggest sealed box you can fit in your trunk, the box will cost you all of 20 bucks...if you dont like it, build a new one and port and stuff it. Either way its gonna be way louder than what you've got now
-
i dunno if you can make your hair move with only 500 watts...but maybe....you're probably gonna need a system with at least 1k watts to be able to actually see your hair moving...that being said the mj18 will be a helluva lot louder than what you have right now and will sound very nice in a sealed box... i agree with viperoni though, 2 15s would be better in this application, and you would definitely feel your hair moving and people would hear you from a ways away
-
yeah, subs were not going at full excursion, like i said it was a bad vid, i was still tweaking stuff when my buddy was filming....when they are cranked you cant really hear the music at all when the subs are hitting, lol
-
got a buddy to take a couple vids...they are kinda short and crappy...but o well this is with the gains set very conservatively...subs are probably only getting about 4-500 watts each
-
ahh, i dunno if i can get a vid for a few days yet...im in kind of a quiet neighborhood and theres kids on either side out in their driveways playing...id probably piss off alot of people if i cranked the system up...just know its very loud, lol...ive never actually had the subs going at full excursion yet, but you can see the hatch bouncing and the windshield wiper rattling right off the glass
-
suprisingly, it was very musical. i threw lots of stuff at it, rap(big suprise) some metal, rock, pop...it obviously gets hella loud with rap music...but it was amazing listening to songs like x-amount of words by blue october or down with the sickness by disturbed...heck it even kept up with stuff by in flames, which has very fast and detailed drums...it defined the drum beats very well without making them sound overexaggerated or boomy, i love it
-
lol, glad you like it...o and dont base my woodworking skills on the appearance of that box...it ended up being too large when i went to put it in so i had to take it out, take the top off and shave about 2 inches off the overall height of the box...then it started raining so i whipped it back together really quickly...hence the sloppy cutting into the box and the bulges where the screws were put in poorly...ill probably make a new box that fills the entire trunk, as i have alot of wasted space, and something to mount the amp so i can have that seat back...but its all fine for now
-
ahh, tried to get you guys vids but the battery on my camera died right away...heres the pics i did manage to get...excuse the wire shavings...if youve read any of my other posts youll understand, lol

ya ill get some up on wed or thursday depending on the weather
-
the maws are getting bout 5-600watts from the viper...in a 3.something cuft sealed box....i think it needs something a bit bigger, as it doesnt have as much output for the lows(under 40hz) as i might like...that being said they are hella loud on any note they hit, i really like that they dont jsut go boom boom boom, as alot of setups that ive heard do, so ill probably stuff the box
-
o i love them...just played some test tones on them with the gains set properly and its ridonkulous....i really wanna get it metered to see how loud it really is...ive heard cars that were metered at mid 130s and they didnt sound nearly as loud as my system does, so i have high hopes for it
-
yeah, i saw the 300w plate amp on their site, and i figure it would be well paired with the maw 15 in a sealed box...helluva lot louder than what i got now
-
i posted about this on another forum, but didnt get much help..however i have more ideas about it now... i got a set of computer speakers (edifier s5.1) i find the speakers themselves to be more than adequate, and the sub is very musical, however the subwoofer is very lacking in volume and spl, and i believe due to its tuning sounds horrible on certain notes, so i want to improve on it in the most inexpensive way i can... i was thinking i could build a sub in a box with a plate amp, and hook it right up to the sub input on the sound card, then just have the edifiers go to the rest of the inputs..which i know is very ghetto but i think it would do what i want it to do... my other thought was to just get rid of the edifier system and go with the sub/plate amp and new speakers...i have 2 focal ca130 coaxial speakers which are awesome, but im not sure what id do for power/control of them...i dont really need surround sound so ultimately 2 speakers and a bigass sub are just fine for me.. any way i cut it im going to want a new sub and amp...as i really like mach5s stuff i was thinking of going with one of their subs and the 300w plate amp on their site...thought it would be really awesome to do an 18" with that amp...but im worried that while it will be powerful, it wont be tight and musical enough, as ive never heard an 18" sub before...i know their 12 would be fine in a sealed box, so i might go with one of those...im very open to suggestions
-
hmm, thanks denim....funny you should mention it, as i currently have 2 maw 15s in a sealed box in my car right now...but i think i might just take 1 out and build a ported box for the car and use the one i take out for my "ht" setup...and maybe get the 300w plate amp off their site for it....would be better for space than the 18 anyways...although having an 18" subwoofer in my room would be damn cool
-
yeah..the speakers will be hooked up to my pc..but my pc pretty much is my ht setup right now. As for budget? dont really wanna spend anything over 300, just trying to get some harder hitting and more powerful bass in my room. i figured i should be able to swing it with that budget if i bought a plate amp, sub and something to power the focals with and just build boxes for all of the stuff. I dont have a ton of space so im not looking to do anything extravagent, just something simple and straightforward with alot of tight, accurate, and hard hitting bass
