Crude box plans for a 12" SSD w/ copper
juicyfruit replied to juicyfruit's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
Thanks guys, I will go sealed then. -
My uncle had all the tools to help with the build but then a lady drove into his garage and in the process ran over the main gas line. His whole garage was torched, including the tools and his brand new Honda Pilot. Since the last time I've posted, I haven't had time to build it but a coworker of mine wants to help out with the build so I just wanted to go over some options. TIA My max outside dimensions: W=35" L=8.5" H=15". This is going in an '06 Suby wagon. The sealed box should work fine but I'm wondering if ported could work also. I listen to some rap, but mostly alternative and stuff like Blue October, Silversun Pickups, etc. I think I have the room for ported but I haven't a clue how to build the port. I'm thinking a slot port would be easier. From my readings, I think I'd want it tuned to 32hz but don't know what size to achieve a smooth punchy bass. Not sure if it'll help but I am running stock electrical, an Alpine 9815 deck, and a Hifonics ZX7500. 2 pics for the same sealed box, yields 1.006 cu ft after displacement.

Crude box plans for a 12" SSD w/ copper
juicyfruit replied to juicyfruit's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
Using this calculator and using every bit of space I can in the trunk, I came up with this: Just wondering now where to buy this port or how to fabricate one and where to locate it. Should I have the sub facing up and the port facing the rear? Is it possible to make a slot port instead? Any suggestions welcome. Perhaps change the port length and diameter? Not sure how changing either affects the output so hopefully someone can help shed some light on this for me. TIA! -

As for 1.8-2.5 cubic feet, closer to 1.8 would yield tighter bass versus 2.5? -

Older Hifonics, rated at 750w RMS bridged but can't find any place to bench the mofo to see what it's really putting out. I suspect around 500? -

Sweet! So honored the all-knowing ramos is helping me out. From the bcae calculator: Height? = 15 Inches Width? = 35 Inches Depth1? = 6.5 Inches Depth2? = 9.5 Inches If the above dimensions are OUTSIDE dimensions, enter the thickness of the wood below. Wood Thickness = .75 Inches Total box volume = 1.701 Ft3 And from the SSD enclosure recommendations: Ported box we recommend using 1.8-2.5 cubic feet @ 33Hz (this is optimal in our eyes and to our ears, you can tune 31-35hz fine if you so please) Looks like I'm a tad short on total volume. I could bump up the Depth1 and Depth2 numbers but would like to hear a noticeable change going from my sealed box in the pics to a ported. If I can't be louder and retain the tightness, I might stay sealed. Thanks much! -

Is this in the wrong forum? -
Good advice, I think I'll stick with sealed 1.1cu ft and have Home Depot cut larger than what I need.

Here are the recommendations for an SSD 12" so you don't need to open another window or tab, for you Firefox users for reference. SSD 12

Listened to Show Stoppers this morning and WOW. I know for sure my old subs didn't hit those lows. BEEFY!
-
So something like 24.5 L x 14 H x 16 D? Really wanted to avoid having another big box back there. The 2 12s before totally gave me droopey butt syndrome in the wagon.
-
Okay, back from class. Before I start working on schoolwork, I thought of a word that I feel describes this sub. BEEFY I don't know how to describe it besides using that word. It just sounds solid, really solid. Construction is not too shabby either. I absolutely love it. Can't imagine putting 1k watts to it though.

Initial impression is WOW! Haven't built my custom box yet but had an extra one that's 1.4cu ft so just plopped it in. Didn't change any settings on my amp but man, it sounds like there's 2 12s in there. NICE! Just did a search, looked up a few suggestions on what to set my amp at and will bump it when I go to school later. Thanks all for the help and will post pics later this weekend (papers and finals coming up). -Sunny

Oh crap, sorry.

I had the same question, posed to Nick and he told me there should be at least 1" behind the magnet. He said something about the dustcap blowing off or something from pressure issues. I am doing 2" to be on the safe side. . . HTH

You bet! I'm glad in the meantime I have an extra box laying around, not sure of the dimensions but it should be around 1cu ft. Gonna plop the sub in tomorrow as soon as I get it.

I see a ton of pretty designs floating around was wondering what people were using. I Googled it but they all "calculate" various specs and I'm looking for a drawing program? Photoshop seems a little excessive for this. Wanted to draw something up and have you all take a look before I get all my pieces cut but the sub hasn't shipped out yet so I've got some time. Thanks!
-
It's so pretty on Sketchup though.
-
Did a quickie, outside dimension 1.24cu ft before displacement. This is going into a WRX wagon and I wanted to go as shallow as possible so I could fit my golf clubs in the back. Thanks Nick for all the help and sub is scheduled for delivery tomorrow! Wish I didn't have finals coming up so I could work on this box though.

Looks great so far.

Thanks, downloading that now. I don't need anything extravagant and ease of use will definitely be a plus.

Geez, my download keeps stalling. Argghhhh!

Thanks, downloading now.

Hifonics Zeus 7500 vs. JL 500/1
juicyfruit replied to juicyfruit's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Thanks for all the replies. The deal fell through and in all honesty, I probably jumped the gun a little bit. I already have an amp and thinking about it a little more, why not see how it sounds with the SSD first? I just got excited over a prospective 500/1 at $150. My Hifonics bumped the crap out of my Diamond M3s, which were rated at 250w rms so hopefully I'll get around the same output. Man, I can't wait for the sub to come in! Still have to build the box but I'm excited for that too. Thanks again for all the replies and this site is a wealth of info. -Sunny -
Hifonics Zeus 7500 vs. JL 500/1
juicyfruit posted a topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Plan on using the Hifonics, rated at 750w rms for my SSD 12" coming in soon but I was thinking about a JL 500/1 which is a class D versus A/B on the Hifonics. Is $150 a good deal for a used JL 500/1? I would think the JL offers a clean 500w and I've read the Hifonics are overrated. Which one would you guys go for? Thanks! Sunny
