Mach 5 or not...subs and the decision

I do coming from a single maw 15 sealed. It sounds great, and gets loud even though i dont have enough power to fully power it. Great sub all around. By my ear, i would say i am in the 131-134db range off 300ish rms, in the trunk of a 98 2 door neon, sealed box 2.45 net. Someone up here in Canada scored 138+db in a celica iirc on the car. sealed as well. he had about 800rms on tap though. Tl meter. I think the post about it is on here somewhere, in the Mach 5 part, or it may be on the canadian car audio forum.

    MAW-15 for SPL?

looks good. how loud is it to your ears?

    MAW-15 for SPL?

its a long way off 140db. i would guess i am hitting between 133-135db from other cars i've heard. and i am underpowering the maw. with 600+ rms i have no doubt i would be 136+ no 140 by any means, but ported should be able to do it even tuned lower than he is tuning.

    MAW-15 for SPL?

i am pretty sure i'll be there as well this time to get metered. single maw 15" sealed in 2.45 net. from what i have heard in other cars i should be above 130 no prob.

    MAW-15 Sealed???

my maw in 2.45 sealed is nice. great lows, and very linear response. no real peak at all. lacks in the higher bass though as you approach 70hz and up.

    MAW-15 for SPL?

should be able to get 140 tuned that high no prob. imo

    What is your advice?

I am either going to port my single maw i have now (3cf net tuned to 32 hz with 31sq ft of port area) or buy another maw and do 2 sealed at 3.5cf net , only no separate chambers. . there is a brace though . Which would be your choice? I want louder, but dont want to lack in sq. i would stuff the sealed box heavily to make up for the space. which do you "think" would be louder out of the 2 setups?

    What is your advice?

Go for the ported box, but maybe you don't need 32sqft of port area. That is the nearly free option. whoops. lol i guess i dont need that much.

wow like i said you are everywhere.

    Wow, break in ftw!

There was pics before the crash. lol, of the build and everything along with a vid. there is a vid on roe of the sub getting around 150 rms. nothing special. i will get a good vid up soon with the power i have now. i think i have figured a way to do 2 sealed. i would prefer that to 1 ported. only thing is i couldn't have separate chambers . still may go ported.

    Wow, break in ftw!

Well i have been bumping the maw for a couple months now, and have just recently been being hard on it. Today on the way home i was listening to late nite tip, when the whole sound changed. literally like night and day instantly. never saw, or heard anything like this before. now it gets right down and plays the low low note in that song like the others. at first i thought the sub was screwed, cause it sounded so different. then i realised it was playing clearer and louder than before, plus hitting lower. anyone ever experiance this with any sub? pretty crazy huh?

    Wow, break in ftw!

sounds awesome. Now vids!!!!!! If its vids you want, its vids you get. lol. I'll try to get some tonight, or tomorrow. 25hz ripples my trunk. and shakes the glass in the front door of the house pretty darn good from 15-20 ft away. Still underpowering it though. i figure somewhere in the vicinity of 300rms going to it. got to upgrade this amp.

    Wow, break in ftw!

I am still in amazment about the change. I thought i was hitting the low notes before, but now it reaches way down with some good output. the biggest difference i noticed was in late nite tip, and throw it up. i never knew throw it up had such a low note in it. its almost as los as late nite tip. oh well, i am happy. cant wait till i port it.

    it's alive

whats the setup? box size? tuning if any? i plan on porting my maw this week-end i think. just gotta get my hands on a 6" aero. wood should be cut and together for the most part this week-end. just gotta get a port. my single maw 15" pounds sealed, but i yearn for just a bit more output. and i agree very clean subs. they dont seem to like the higher bass though, but i also have a large sealed box which accounts for some of it.

    Q15 numbers

39hz song? throw it up, little john. great song for spl.

    i need some advice

The maw will be louder than the perfects, but i say coming from someone with a maw 15" try to port your subs first. it may be what you are looking for, if not you are only out the cost of wood. than try a maw.

    Maw 15" port area?

i have a plan for the 6" aero. It will use quite a bit less space than a slot port because of the wood thickness. diregarding the displacement of the wood they fill about the same space, and i was like well slot would be easier, than i figured in the wood. anyways i am looking to get a 6" aero in the next week or so as well as the mdf to build a box. coming soon 3.1-3.2 net tuned to 32-33hz. that is the best i can figure it too, with the changing in aero size(flaring). btw i got a couple of flex vids that i have to upload to my computer. 25hz ripples my trunk severly. lol. should have them up tonight or tomorrow.

    Maw 15" port area?

I have my maw in a 2.45net sealed encolsure, and while it gets fairly loud, i long for a bit more output. I was designing a new box for it, and came up with around 3.1ct net tuned to around 33hz. only problem is fitting a large port in there. was either planing on a single 4" aero port, or dual 3" aero ports. slot port will not work due to size. My problem is i dont want to take up my whole trunk, and the dims i have to work with are 33"wx16.75"hx14"d. i would prefer to have the ports firing toward the rear as well as the sub. Not alot of port area, but the sub is not an spl monster, and has a lower 13mm xmax. just wondering what people thought of that setup as far as port size is concerned. thanks.

    Maw 15" port area?

What would be the smallest port that you would recommend Mark? Do you think a single 6" or dual 4" aeros would suffice? i have a plan to perhaps run a single 6" aero, or dual 4"s with a 90* adapter on it or them. only way to make them fit as far as i can see. thanks for any more help you can give me.

I am in for sure. Could always use another one and try to design a box to fit both.

    Mach 5 reviews

Well hello again. I had to re-register, but anyways. I had a review of my maw 15 a while ago, 2.45net sealed with around 150 rms going to it @8ohm. Well things have changed, i got my old mono amp repaired, and am now running quite a bit more power it it. Not sure on exact power as the amp i have running is over rated i feel. Its a couple year old sony amp that is rated at 900rms@2ohm. I feel it is most likely putting out somewhere in the 600-700rms range. I have heard of this amp in particular being bench tested at close to 800rms, and i have also heard of it being tested at around 650rms. Either way it makes the maw very happy, and me as well. Its not as loud as i hoped, but it is a sealed setup. I can only imagine what it would be like ported. Its doing a number on my car though. my trunk is in serious need of deadening now. its flexing like crazy. I am sure that it would be more than loud enough for most people. For the price, i am convinced there is nothing out there that can compare. For reference, i had 2 12" audiobahns before, and we all know about them, loud, but no sq at all, and this maw is louder than they were sealed, and close to as loud as they were when i had them ported @35hz, so yeah, it gets good and loud. The lows kill as well. Late nite tip is gut wrenching, as well as akon i wanna fuc* you. Throw it up by little john is insane to say the least. When the bass starts, you cant see out of any mirror in my car.LOL. So there you go, thats my review of the maw 15". Any questions about anything in particular, just pm me.
