Only problem with that is finding a decent amp that'll give the q fair power for a reasonable price. HT amps are crazy expensive at any dealer around here. Then I still have to find a good source unit and speakers. Honestly either one will be similarly priced in the end. The house has hardwood w/ a red/blue oriental rug in the living room, so slightly darker woods would look very nice. Maybe a mahogany? Either way, the killer has been the amp issue. I just got a Behringer EP2500...hopefully it is turns out to be bad@ss. Used for $200 from ebay.

Congrats! This is one of the reasons why I confindently recommend Fi.

I have a US Amps USA-2000x on a Q12. I've never had a problem unless I REALLY abused it. Then I get the glue smell after about 15 minutes.

JL Audio Contacts Elemental Designs Over Patent Infringement Concerns

I detect a hatred for eD from many members. Wondering why? The short version is that Ben Milne is a jakcalope. The long version will take some time to read If you're not a member on carstereos.org...join. Link??? -
I've heard that Kicker just sends you a whole new sub...at an additional cost. In fact, I installed a pair of L5s that were replacements for a pair that they guy blew in a prior install. He had to pay $300 or something. Not entirely sure of the entire story.

I would say go with the BL which is more of an SPL oriented sub. Not that the Q's would be bad or anything. Sounds like you have a lot of power...BTL???

I have a US Amps USA-2000x (2000 watts) on 1 Q12. It starts to smell if I unmercifully beat on it for 15-20 minutes. Otherwise, I've never had an issue and it seems to handle everyday use pretty well. Keep in mind that I'm not very abusive either.

I think he meant Fi+RE=fire. BTW, Impressive!

I was at San Antonio Heatwave last year with Fi. Everyone was like "what kind of sub is that?" or "I've never seen that brand?" I wish I could be there as a fellow Fi fan... I think I can say that I debuted Fi at heatwave...I think I should get one of those cool new shirts. Someone might have seen me, I had a blue BMW.

Damn...it doesn't look 71 lbs. I have an 06 XXX 12 in my closet...I loathe trying to pick that thing up.

Kickers get pretty loud but I don't like how it sounds. Plus, I hear that the L7s aren't cheap to fix in case something goes wrong.

I remember reading the review of the MB Quart QSC-216 right after I ditched the QSD-216s because the tweet was so horribly bright. Not a single mention of it. I couldn't finish 1 song without my ears ringing. Switched to OZ Audio...now I'm happy. CA&E reviews are crap!

Congrats...now go to the gym! (j/k)

You'll notice difference in SQ with a ported box. The Q still sounds good either way. I've found that quick passages tend to not be as sharp in the ported box. In the sealed box, it was dead on at any volume level.

This sucks huge nuts...I missed out on this. I came home on R&R (didn't really get on the internet) and now I'm at a new camp where I can't get on this forum at work. I know I'm crying like a little b1tch...but I would love to get 1 or 2 of these.

What do you guys decide your amp purchases on?
bigjae1976 replied to audio-neon's topic in Sundown Audio
To me, reliability is #1. If I am going to spend $500+ on an amp, I want it to last for a decade provided that it is well cared for. -
Congrats!

I've seen some people say that the screw should go all the way through and to use a screw that is at least 1/2" longer than the thickness of the baffle. So for a 1" baffle, use at least a 1.5" long screw. Make sure you predrill all the way through so the MDF doesn't split on the backside.

I'm pretty tight on space so I went with a 24 sq in slot port and I have noise. From my experience, I would say that you need to be closer to 32 sq in for a 2.0 cu ft box for a Q12.
-
I haven't seen too many 18s in trunks because the box is humongous. Before building, I'd make sure that it will not only fit but you can get the box into the car as well. It would suck wasting all of that MDF and time. If you are hell bent on putting an 18, you can build it in the trunk. Your car will probably ride with its ass draggin'

I've got mine tuned to 33 hz and the SQ is really good. It seemed to quicken up a bit in a sealed box. But the tonality in either alignment is great. Keep in mind that I only had it in a sealed box for 3 hours.

Congrats...I know you'll enjoy it.

I've got a Q12 in a 2.0 cu ft box tuned to 33 hz on a 2000 watt US Amps, low pass crossover at 100 hz and a SSF at 27hz. I beat the holy hell out the Q and it won't bottom out. But it it gets hot and starts to smell funny. I've yet to hear any suspenion noise from it, even when playing Late Night Tip Defintely turn down the bass boost and check the SSF.

I might be the only one that thinks this but it seems like I have to come to this forum to get the pertinent info as far as enclosure size and what options mean. IMO, this kind of followed how RE went...the website wasn't very helpful. My opinion...I would think that their website should provide a little info for the benefit of the consumer. The argument against that is Fi is an enthusiast oriented company so most know what the deal is. Maybe I'm used to more elaborate sites. I don't want anyone to take this as a complaint, more like picky constructive criticism to make Fi and AA better. I love what Fi is doing for the industry and my expectations of AA is pretty high as a result of the past history of Fi and RE. If the price to get a top notch sub is to ask some questions on a forum, then I'll be happy. Sorry to steer to conversation away from the topic. I'm impatiently waiting to see what AA has to offer!

PMs aren't the way to go, definitely use email. They are usually pretty quick on the emails. But if you search this forum...you're question will probably be answered already.
