I have a guy today who wants me to put a single sub in his expedition. He was looking for a single amp able to put out about 1k watts for when he gets an ssd (he wants me to order his stuff for him). I priced a bxi1206d, and you can get one shipped for about $250- so 1k for 4. That's 200 under the limit, and if you're worried about one crappin' out, you could put an extra $50 in and get a replacement if it goes up. I just feel that they put out decent power for the cash, and I like the ones I had. Maybe someone else can recommend another amp/company that has decent amps for similar prices.

Yeah, I myself have been looking for a decent 4k watt amp (well, 2 of them). I've sort of been beating the subject up trying to find something I'll like before spending so much cash to be dissapointed. I'm looking in the ~1300 dollar range each, but I know I'm looking for a single amp per sub. I'm also willing to take used/refurb as long as they look half decent and work properly. If you search I started a thread about 2 btl 18s on 4k watts. There are many 4kwrms + amps out there, but little that meet the budget. I'd kill for some cactus 5ks, but they're about 2k each. From every recommendation I've gotten (except those by memphis dealers) the rockford 4k is the best amp for the bill. I can get those refurb offline for 1300, or used for 1100. Warranty is not something I'm sure of with that. I've owned many used amps, and never had any problems except where one was damaged because of physical abuse, and it was already close to 10 years old. As far as hifonics, you get what you pay for. I've used 2 of them for months, 1 for almost a year, and they sounded great. With 2 of them on 2 18s I broke 150 tuned for daily, but under some extreme loads I have had them go into protect before I set the filters right. The one I've had for a year I've cranked for some pretty extended periods w/o it heating up much at all to speak of, and I've put it at 1/2 ohm and cranked it up, forcing it into protect a half dozen times in a row just to see if it would hold up because I wanted an excuse to buy a new amp-and it still works perfectly. I've had a decent experience w/ these amps, and while there is better out there, it's a nice amp for the $. I'm not familiar with their xx-goliath or more powerful amps- but I've heard mixed things about it. Memphis seems to be great for the price, not sure if you can get a good price on a soundstream 6500, but I think your best bet is a few smaller amps to get in the price you want. Realistically, if you can get 4 hifonics 1600ds for less than 300 each shipped w/o a warranty, you should have enough overhead to make sure you don't clip, even if they're over rated by hundreds of watts you'll easily have 4kwatts. If one of them does have a problem 6 months later, you might be able to get a warranty, but if not it'll only be a few hundred instead of $1k+ to replace it. There are other comparable amps, these are just something I have personal experience with. Check into the sundown audio 1500s, they're going to be a bit over your budget I think, but maybe denim could tell you a bit more about those. Have you ordered the subs, and do you know if you want one beefy mama-jama of an amp, or several smaller amps? theabunai made a good point- I'm looking for 4kwatts, so maybe you'll find something I have overlooked.

New Video (beater Than Beat, Than Beater Then Beat Beat)

Man, that's gotta be loud. He sure did cringe a lot for not caring if you turned it up -
Thats mean-poor old lady. my moms 70, she heard my system and told me I was retarded. Must really sound good though.
-
Yeah, used makes a huge difference, and when you can find an amp at half cost it makes it worth the lack of warranty imo. If an amp cost 2000 new, you buy one used for 1000, and 6 months later it craps out, spend the other 1000 and get a second, or try to repair what you have. My luck it's always right after the warranty goes up when you begin to have problems. 500 for 2 those memphis, is that used? Even so that's a killer deal.

Looks nice, has it been metered yet, and do you have any vids?

You can just select that in the dropdowns when you order your sub- then update in the info in the forum about the options: "The new signature option adds signatures from Scott, Nick, and Shawn. The testing still isn't conclusive why, but this will add an easy 2-3dbs to any setup" I'd buy that. Could I also get my T-shirt and boxers signed when I order? Thanks -
For that price, w/o used or refurb it narrows it down a bit. Do you have the subs already? Are you looking for an amp a piece, or 2 amps, or 1 amp? what are the voice coils, dual 1 or 2 ohm? That'll help narrow it down a bit more. If you want an amp a piece, the hifonics 1206d seem good for the money, about 250-300 each. That'd be around 4kwatts. If you want 2 I had 2 hifonics bxi2006ds that never gave me any problems (except when I tried going below 1ohm)- thats about 4kw. I'm sure there are plenty of 1kw amps you could get for a similar price, just throwing out what I had good experience with. If you want one amp and have a local memphis dealer they told me they'd do $1200 w/ 1 year warranty for a memphis 4k-4kwatts at 1ohm, they don't sell online, so I'd check the shops. You could get a mm4000.1, that's 4k at 2 ohms. Again, just depends on what kind of setup you're trying to get, and the coils on the subs.

I want a pony! j/k, would an autograph show up very well on the black dustcap w/o doing in the same white as the Fi logo? -
I think I can see some small indentations in some pics where finishing nails/staples were put in, or is that the light? I just can't tell from the pics. I guess that's a good thing though, everything looks so clean.

I think I'm fiished as well. Tried the PM/email thing, but I guess you guys must be pretty busy. Would you please pm me about this, Scott/Nick/Shawn? I'm about to buy a BL, so maybe you could save some shipping. Thanks.

Steve, it's a little hard to tell from the pics, did you put any nails/screws of any kind in that, or just clamp till the glue set? Thanks.

How to determine amplifier output
tejcurrent replied to tejcurrent's topic in Technical Info & How To's
You know a place to get one on the cheap I'll pick it up. If someone wants to sell theirs I'll get it, just let me know. -
Well, I guess it goes back to the 'what happens when we assume saying'. I see where you are coming from. Grim, what are the dimensions you have to work with?
-
I just want to ask, was I wrong about the port being shorter if the box is substantially larger? If I'm wrong about that please tell me. I know that if he's using the same size box the port'll be larger for a larger area port, but if he makes the port only a little bigger and the box a good bit bigger, would that not make his port size go down? If I'm wrong I appologize, but I think I'm right on that part. I still agree with sean's statement, but I thought he was making the box over a foot bigger.

I got my first BTL 18 about 5 months ago, fully loaded dual 2 ohm version. It was the fist 18 I'd purchased or even heard in person, so I was a bit skeptical because of the mixed things people say about larger drivers as far as quality go. The last two setups I had owned were a kicker L7 15 in 5cubes tuned around 32hz, and and alpine type-x 12 in 1.1cube tuned around 32hz. I had been trying to find a very loud woofer that still sounded half decent, and while the alpine sounded nice, and the kicker got loud, neither did both very well. The kicker was very loud though, so I was really trying to find something that could out-do it. When I started trying to find out about the Fi products, I was extremely surprised to find out that I, the lowly consumer, was able to talk to the men behind the product, and that was amazing to me. The customer support was great from day one, and the interaction with scott/nick/shawn on everything was so helpful, I knew I was in for something good. I built a box 8ft^3 tuned to 35hz for daily with about 115sqinch of port area, but tuned a little high so I could put up a bit better score. There was a double thickness of 3/4inch mdf for the baffle, and 3/4 for the other sides. I couldn't wait to put my Hifonics bxi2006d on it, run with 1/0stinger wire from the 3 batteries and 200amp alternator. I have an alpine 9831 head unit, and CDT components, all I needed was that sub to strengthen the low end. I noticed upon arrival that the packaging was very good, and even though the weight was somewhere near 70lbs everything was intact. The sub looked great, beefy in all aspects, and was huge to say the least! I put the sub in the box and put it in my 99 yukon with adrenaline pumping in anticipation. I kept the volume low, and put in some rock to see how it would handle the kick drums. Whoa, it was articulate and crisp, and sounded DEEEP. After playing with it a while, I put in some rap, Jeezy I believe, and was taken back at the output. A normal listening volume is between 5-7 notches, but I kept cranking the nob, and at a volume of 10 it passed the output of the alpine (when at full tilt), at 13-14 it passed the Kicker L715 (when at full tilt), and it just kept going. At a volume of 20, I could still not hear any distortion, and the volume was incredible. I cracked my drivers window open and felt the air gushing in, actually blowing my hair - which had never happened with my other subs. It sounded controlled and deep, unlike any sub I'd heard before. So much for the 'sloppiness' of larger woofers, this was clean and simply amazing in output. I stepped out of my yukon and looked at the flex of the body. The lock on my trailer hitch was jumping, and my rear doors were moving like they wanted to come open. Getting back in, the bass in Young Dro-Jackie Chan hit so hard it took your breath away, and the lows in hypnotize by Jeezy made the air move in and out of my lungs like nothing else. A few days later I went and got metered. I knew it was louder than the low 140s I was hitting with the l7, but not sure how much. I put in some test tones and went to work on it, finding the peak to be at 42hz. I hit 148 and change, and still 145 and change at 32-34hz. I built a new box a few days later, CRX style with 7.5cubes tuned to 35hz w/ 115 sqin of port. This time I hit over 149. Since then I've purchased a 2nd sub and amp to match, and hit ~149 at 32hz, and a little under 151 @ 42. It stays loud from the low lows up, instead of dropping off where many others do. Now about 3 months since I've had both going, they've had time to break in. The SPL is still rediculous, they pound all day without a problem. After breaking in some of the initial tightness of them is gone, but that can be expected. I would say the SQ is not quite that of an alpine type-x- but close, and MUCH louder than average. I have a 4kw+ amp on the way, and plan to get another to give them a grand total of 8000+ watts, so I will update when I get this done. Being that this is my daily driver I do not plan on tuning higher, but I am very very satisfied with the sq that this spl driver can maintain. I've had people with 'competition' setups get in my car and have a shocked look on their face. I've had people who brag to be hitting in the 160s with 6 12's get in my car, and jump back out saying how ungodly loud it sounds -especially on the lows. Overall they are the best subs I've ever owned, great all around. Hope this helps with someone when trying to find a great sub, for a great price, that really belts out the power and sounds good doing it.

I assumed he was building a larger box since that was discussed. If he went from 6-7+ft^3 then he'd still have to shorten the port if he only made it 10sqin bigger. If working with what's there you are absolutely correct about longer.

because that's how it works. With my electrical upgrades (which aren't really that extensive, 200a alt, 3 batts) I stay around 14.8v all the time. Under steady heavy notes I go down around 14.3ish, if I'm blasting test tones it'll even go down to 13.8 or lower the more I blast, but that's with 4krms. Where your voltage sits is regulated by your alternator (to really simplify it). Most alternators actually put out a little less that 14.4v from the factory (in my experience). Your batterie(s) may also help keep your voltage up. Car batteries (most) are 12v, but for instance I bought a yellowtop and tested it before putting it in my car, it was sitting at about 13.8

15ft^3 tuned 35hz, 225 sqin of port Brand New A/C 200a powermaster altl 42hz 150.9 Legal @ 42hz 149.8 Legal @ 33hz I tested on 2 different brand spankin new a/c meters (2 dif shops) several times(no access to t/l) lowest was 150.3 @ 42hz, highest 150.9 Just bought 1 SS 10000d, going to try that then either get 1 more of the same amp, or 2 RF 4kwatt amps. Total of 8-10kwatts rms to the 2 subs, with either 1 more run of 1/0 the rear, or a run of 2/0, haven't decided yet. Probably 2 1/0 runs, but it must be specially ordered. Will post updated #s after new amps are installed

caan, what freq and what tune?
-
Same here, so many ideas. Configuring everything, so many different ways.

cant hurt. for some reason before the subs break in they are actually a little louder from my experience. Maybe it's just me, but the #s on the meter reflect this as well.

How to determine amplifier output
tejcurrent replied to tejcurrent's topic in Technical Info & How To's
OK, then I'll just forget it until I can get the proper equipment (come on used stuff). Anyway, I'll say 2k watts = not loud enough.
