Trying to get better sq
tejcurrent replied to tejcurrent's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Well I've decided to do a very low tuned enclosure for an alpine type-x 12 I have for my h/t, but I still plan on ported boxes for my subs. I love SPL too I still have 2 btl 18s and 2 memphis 4ks in back, but those will be for show and the 10% of the time I just want stupid loud The other 90% I'm thinking the nice front stage and a single sealed 10 or 12" Q. No, I don't plan on running 18s and the Q at the same time, just switching between the two. If you can tell I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too lol. I'm not looking to win any sq shows here, but I would like to be able to feel like I'm listening to a performance rather than a reproduction. The dark side is just feeling more right the more I think about it -

Yeah its been getting pretty bad. To the point of not really enjoying actually listening to music in my truck. Not really liking the 36hz tune of my new box either. -

Then I guess 2-way is where I will start. I'll look into the H701, thanks for the suggestion. I'll make a seperate post in the speaker section when I get the new 4ch in and start the process if I find I'm having some issues. Thanks everyone! -

Well, the x-overs are much better on the 9853 from the bit I've seen, as well as much better eq (even if it is more complicated). Should I start another topic or do you think you might be able to help me with my other problems here? As emperor asked- the midbass is lacking pretty bad. I (in the not too distant future) plan on running a RF 360.2 for some extra equalization. I could start with the 6.5s and try 2-way, but I really wouldn't mind a few hours of tuning RIckRolled, I can fit an 8" and the 6.5 in the door with only minor work. I want this to look clean and as factory as possible- without any obvious visible speakers. I don't like obvious kickpods despite the advantages they offer- mainly because passengers often treat them like KICK pods, and trample your equipment. Thanks for the help. -
I can understand the Q but the recommending the BL (or several mentioned) over the SSD with the power on hand? x2 on the SSD with copper coils and BP option. If you can fit it I'd go with an 18 over the 15 since you want it louder.

Thanks! I sure will be sad to part with them, I've loved them for close to 2 years now, as long as these sound as good I'll be happy.

Well after shipping ill probably be looking at 700 for both subs sold. That means another 500 out of my pocket. 300 would leave me with more green and I absolutely loved my btls. I just want a bit more cone area. I couldn't remove the box for all 4 subs myself, but I could pop 2 smaller boxes out on my own. I'm having a hard time comparing the 18 btl to the 21 dp because they are so different. I couldn't give them the 4000 watts daily like I could my btls, but for comps I think they'd be fine and less of a strain on my charging system to achieve the same output for daily listening. Please correct me if I'm wrong in my thinking?
-
I wasn't sure if the cost would make it worth it. Online I wouldn't make much off of the BTL, so if I could save some money by reconing I'd rather do that.
-
Honestly the sundown 3k or a kicker 2500 would be a great choice. The Hifonics amp will do fine, but obviously more power generally= more output.
-
I was wondering something similar. I've been running a memphis 4k per BTL and was considering trying 2 of the 21s on for size. I know what they're rated but realistically will they handle 3k or so each? I've had 4 alts for a while and plan on down-grading to a dual alt setup so I'm weighing my options. Thanks!

If it doesn't have the 3rd slug it isn't 'loaded'. IIRC one of the largest benefits was it coupled well with the high xmax coil giving things more room to travel. Chances are it doesn't have the high xmax coils either. Hopefully someone who understands things a bit better could chime in.

Or you can get a router jig at lowes for ~$30. Cuts huge holes, down to about 10 inches, and be very exact.
-
Such totally different setups, but they all would need at least some electrical upgrades. I would use the kicker 2500 in any one of those setups, just 2 of them with the BTLs- and if you can fit 15" L7s I'd go btl 15s. Having used a 12 and 15" L7 I know they weren't too bad, but I'd take the BTL in a heart beat. The most I've heard on a W7 was a jl 1000.1 I think, and I've just never been impressed. Plus a BTL is almost 1/2 the price of a W7 iirc. You're really going to want a beefy charging system to support 5000+rms though, maybe a MLA module, h/o alt or dual alt setup, and several batteries. If you don't want to do all that maybe one of the other setups will make more sense for you.
-
It will depend on the install/setup, but it can.
-
2 sundowns. I've used the 2006ds and they were good for the price, but the sundowns would be better imo. Maybe if you can get a 2606d for cheaper. Make sure you allow money/space for electrical upgrades you'll need.
-
Unfortunately I know a few people that use it Sub looks great.
-
Def. the BL for that amount of power.
-
A good amp that will provide each sub with 1000rms will be sufficient. If you aren't too sure, then I wouldn't risk the extra power. The sundown 1k, rf 1k, or many many other 1000w amps will do fine. I'm cheap and would rather have one big amp than a bunch of small ones, so maybe a single sundown 1500 or RF 2k (or again any decent brand 2000w mono amp) would be what you're looking for.

it came

I've used them on several different subs, alpine type-x in the wifes car, btl 18, bl 12. Nice amp for the money imo. -

Thanks. I haven't had any problems- but I am working on getting them out of the car all together. -
Installed my final charging system

I've been running things off 1 alternator and 5 optimas for quite a while now, problem after problem kept delaying me getting my charging system right. About a month ago I finally got everything in, and just figured I'd say I'm very pleased. I ordered 3 alternators and a 4 alt bracket through Iraggi and was met with terrible customer service. He didn't respond to emails or calls for weeks on end. I finally got the alts in twice the time he promised (the only reason I went with him for alts) just to find he didn't send my bracket. After being promised I'd be called for weeks and even having his girlfriend/wife answer to just hang up on me the bracket finally arrived. I don't mind a long build time- understand that. It's just a problem when someone says one thing and does another. Also all my alternators look different inside and out. 2 of the cases are obviously refurbs, and the internal parts of 2 of them look used/blackened. I will say everything seems to be working good now, and the bracket was really something I couldn't get anywhere else. On the other end of the spectrum I ordered an MLA module to go with the alternators. Good thing I did- because even after 2 shipments and 2 orders Iraggi didn't include the wiring (plugs) like he said he would. The guys are absolutely awesome. Respond every time, answer the phone during business hours (and often much later too) and shipping time was just a few days after build. They even kept me updated during the build. I recieved the first "Pro" module, which has a few features the original didn't including a high/low setting so that I can go from around 15.5v around 1000rpms to 14.4 for daily use. My factory idling voltage was 13.8 btw. MLA has been absolutely fantastic, and I would recommend them as a company, and their product to anyone. I have 3 spools of kicker 1/0 wire to add in the mix, but with 8,000rms for 30+ seconds of test tones the voltage at the front doesn't dip below 14.3-14.4. There is voltage loss to the back, but I have to add all this wire in before I really go into that too much. After I add in the wire I'll post up how it holds 16,000rms. The final product: MLA module, 1 130a alternator and 3 "380" amp alternators, with 6 batteries. On to pics: Bad directions ftl- have to move a few things to add in those extra pulleys. So far it'll do 152 and change sealed at the dash at 32hz, but I that was the first time I've metered it since I've done a bunch of changes, so plenty more to go (including 2x the power). door open -

Thanks guys! I'm really not trying to compare/compete with anyone else though, you know? There just are so few 'big' setups around where I live in SC-and no one with more than dual alts. -
Do sealed boxes have a tuning frequency?
tejcurrent replied to frankyp00's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
The btl is really inteded for ported use. I'd go with the 30-32hz tuning and see how you like it, -
Even with 2 layers of wood (mdf, birch, etc) you will want some internal bracing. Good luck with it, and focus on your charging system before everything else- I learned that the hard way
