New Desktop for Surfing
scottxgtr replied to MKader17's topic in Computers / Electronics / Music / Games
sounds familiar from what i read back when i had a dell 3000 series. I ended up just buying a new computer. for just a web surfer though a $500 budget is plenty, especially if you already have a monitor. -
i think thats one of the best sets of rules on any forum. most of them are just plain internet etiquette. the rest make sense in regards to the content of this forum. from one webmaster to another, id say you guys run a real nice show here at SSA. i dont bother with any other audio forums because the ones ive visited in the past have the maturity level of a 7 year old.

like alton mentioned, id find a set of terminals first, such as these on parts express: Round Speaker Terminal 4-1/8" Gold Spring-Loaded | Parts-Express.com then i would cannibalize it a little by cutting some of the plastic off. i would leave enough to be able to attach it to the frame of the woofer with a pair of pop rivets. then its just a matter of soldering the leads to the terminals.

i take it you are looking for parts and pieces. partsexpress sells the complete kits. i have a pair of 6" ones laying around im not using. finding pipe to fit the flares can be tricky too so plan ahead. you have to use the thin wall drain pipe and not the standard schedule 40 pvc.

Scrapin the Coast / USACI Regional
scottxgtr replied to Randal Johnson's topic in Competitions & Other Organized SPL/SQ Events
lots of seafood restaurants all over the coast. i dont head out to ocean springs that often tho so im not familiar with whats out that way. only one to ring a bell is aunt jenny's on washington ave the casinos have great buffets if you want a little of everything. the beau rivage is pretty good but is gonna run you around $30 a person. island view in gulfport is pretty good as well and cheaper than the beau. other that that we got most chains you see anywhere else. hooters on hwy 90 will probably be a hot spot. not much else on hwy 90 besides waffle houses. -
i dunno. he didnt specify a budget. but his budget is somewhere between 2 q's and 1 btl. i cant wait for his next thread: "which would be louder, 50 of Tweeter A vs 40 of Tweeter B?"
-
if your goal is just to be loud, just spend the money on a bunch of tweeters and run them off the 1500w amp. think thats a stupid answer? well you asked a stupid question. 2 12" q's will sound really good and get moderately "loud" 1 15" btl has the potential to be "loud", or even "really really loud" at the expense of listening pleasure. you really are comparing apples to oranges as far as woofers go. quit worrying about being louder than your friends, unless you want to go compete for decibels. if thats the case, you shouldnt even be asking which woofer is for your situation.

we have a hwy 90 that runs along the beach. hwy 98 runs no where near the coast. -

Digital Media Recievers
scottxgtr replied to rodneydude23's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
i went with the ixa-w404 because its double din, has a screen and buttons. i dont like those full face screens where everything has to be done via touch screen. im old school, gimme buttons, knobs and sliders. anyhoo, the w404 apparently wasnt a big seller and ive seen some places clear it out already. last place had it for $199, which is a lot less than i paid for it. -
Digital Media Recievers
scottxgtr replied to rodneydude23's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
im using an alpine IXA-W404 at the moment and i have no complaints. on my last cd player i used the ipod hookup most of the time anyway. the menus are easy to navigate so its just like working an ipod. i honestly havent bought a CD in a long time so moving on to a digital media receiver didnt really bother me at all. i never have to worry about a scratched cd ever again, or worse, the cd player skipping in the spl lane. and dont let 2v outputs deter you from a radio. they work just fine and if you really need more voltage you can get a line driver -
saz 3500d output @ 1.33ohm
scottxgtr replied to mrbojang's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
underpowered, no. RMS is a recommendation, not a requirement. those woofers will be happy at that amount of power as long as you set the amp properly, you shouldnt have to worry about blowing the subs. -
I need help picking out a demo vehicle
scottxgtr replied to Quentin Jarrell's topic in Test 1, 2, 3...
^^ this. you are going to have to assume your customers are completely uneducated. if they see a 20 sub setup, they wont be able to mentally scale it down to something they can afford. your sales pitch then is tailored only to spl competitors who are a minority in the customer base. the flip side is if you show people what one or two subs is capable of, they get a real idea of what could be in their own trunk. as long as they are impressed, you will have paying customers. this way appeals to the most people which is what you need right now when you are debuting new product. -
there is a lot of personal preference involved here. are you a ported or sealed kind of guy? myself, i will always run a ported box. i just like them. i love low bass, and when i was running a 18" Q ported at 30hz, i was a very happy individual. it was one of the best sounding setups ive ever had. everyone told me "youre going to port an 18" sub? that thing is going to be sloppy as hell" and it was exactly the opposite. i listen to a lot of rock, so kick drums sounded very natural and tight.
-
you mean a woofer available in 18" sizes wasnt designed to get loud? thats like a v12 sports car that wasnt designed to go fast loud is a relative term. not as loud as a BTL. not as loud as a BL. but if you a Q in the right box and send it 1000w itll give you a good show.

i would try and get some bracing there in the center. and you might want to put some supports for the cloth you plan to stretch across the top. itll look fine dry, but once you hit it with resin it is going to try and sag on you. you could get some wood dowels and glue them on to hold the cloth up.
-
you can narrow your search greatly by finding out what tweeters you like. most tweeters fall into 2 general categories, hard dome and soft dome. im sure youll be able to find some locally to listen to and determine a preference. personally, im a fan on soft dome tweeters. hard domes are too crisp to my ears.

Enclosure Build for Mark @ SSA!! (Installed, P.7)
scottxgtr replied to Argent Audio's topic in Argent Audio
well, they could cut the top out of a huge piece of plexi, engraved with the SSA logo. but that would be too badass. -
yeah, look for factory bolts to use if you want to return it to stock later on. for example, my xterra had some cargo hooks bolted to the floor. i took them out and went to napa to get longer replacement bolts. then it was just a matter of drilling the box and installing the longer bolts with some large washers.

thats it. im buying a cnc router. i cant compete with this -
there is always a fee. if you mark a payment as a gift, the fee is waived unless you transfer it to your bank account. but if you leave it as your paypal balance and spend it using paypal, you can avoid the fee. every other payment option they take it out up front. thats my understanding of it anyway.
