maw 15 in a smaller than 3.0 ported box
Puggsley456 replied to bld 25's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
I see no problem placing a maw 15 in 2-2.5 cubes sealed. I had my pair in 3 cubes total and I liked it. But a bit more space would have probably made a big difference. But to be honest a ported 12" RLP will be pretty close to the output of a sealed Maw 15. -

Looks Good! Simple and Sexy as hell! -
IMO the MD.1D's power rating does seem to be a bit underrated.

Wow, you have a 40hz tune and burped loudest at 45? Doesnt that seem a bit odd? isnt there usually a larger difference in the loudest burp freq? I know with my box that was tuned to 30hz my loudest freq was 49hz.

Very nicely done Kold_Killa! UPS is not being helpful, I will have to lay into them soon. Thats right give to UPS hard and dry, after all if anyone deserved it, it would be them.

Mark.....is this going to be used for the drivers as well? Congrats BiNary.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

I dont wanna know why you have a stuffed squirrel as a sidekick........

Wow both those ebay links are pretty sweet. If I needed one of them I would go with the xenon.

Just to add some more options to this thread......TC is having a sale on some OEM 10" drivers. They look pretty beefy. And are $175 shipped. http://www.tcsounds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1013

Good to know thanks. Are we talking a .5 dcr or .5 nominal? Any ballpark ideas on output or amperage draw at that impedance?
-
Are the merlin mono blocks .5 ohm stable?

Would a 15" Q dual2 work decently in a 2.3 cubic foot @ 30hz enclosure? Would having a driver in a smaller ported box offer the same benifit as having it in a smaller sealed box as in increasing its power handling? As I have a USAmps MD.1D which is rated at 1200@1ohm but I believe it is slightly underrated.
-
If you want that get a fricking mega-phone......
-
Output/SQ wise.....what would you compare it to?
-
So what causes the impedance rise when putting a driver in the enclosure? Is it just from the addition of speakerwire from the sub to the amp?
-
SPL numbers are very hard to predict. The Maw 15 will be limited in its SPL output......buy who knows.

I had 2 MAW 15's in 3 cubes sealed heavily stuffed and trust me......I wish it was bigger. It sounded great but a bigger box would have provided me with a bit more low end. I believe the trial and error by the members of this board has led to 2.4-2.6 cubes to be the ideal goal for a MAW 15 sealed.
-
What I would recommend is.......get a big piece of cardboard and cut some crosssectional pieces of different box sizes and see what you can get through the trunk opening. Its cheap and then atleast you arent stuck with a box to big to get in the trunk.
-
It should work out nicely.
-
And thats for 3 Maw 10's? Becasue it will end up being 2.67ohms for three.....which will nominally be around 3 ohm final load.
-
Thats not my design, I got it off caraudio.com. But as far a sealed goes, its fairly straight forward. You just need to determine how much inernal volume you want. 0.5 cubic feet is recomended for the Maw 10's sealed. But depending on the amount of power you have you can go larger to increase the drivers low end. If you do use that ported design you may want to stuff the box........If its possible on a ported box that is, as I have never done it.
-
Given your trunk dimensions assuming they are external, you dont have enough space to do 3 cubic feet ported. Heres a link to one that is 2.6 cubic feet @ 32hz. http://img29.imageshack.us/my.php?image=26...hz31sqin5ya.png

Honestly..... overall, I dont know if there is a big enough market for 8's. I mean in the enitre car audio world in general. For home audio use definetally. I've never been a fan of 8's.
